Arthur and Aspasia (Sia) Koutsouvelis and Aspasia's mother, Ioulia Raftopoulos along with Helen and Andrew Yiannis, Arthur's sister and brother-in-law pictured outside the Evangelismos Orthodox Church in East Melbourne in 1956. Ioulia Raftopoulos nee Sicotis arrived in Australia from South Africa in 1926. She married George Raftopoulos, who migrated to Australia in 1908 from Frikes and was a founding member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. He and his brother Arthur worked in the Spot Cafe in the 1940s and 1950s. George and Ioulia had two daughters, Effie and Aspasia (Sia). Family celebrations were a very important part of Ithacan social life especially weddings and baptisms. The photo of the family group is at an annual Ithacan picnic held in the 1930. Behind the group are family cars which reflect the increasing economic prosperity of members of the Ithacan community. The bride and groom in the photograph are Costas Raftopoulos and Joyia Carange (Karantgis) who were married at the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church in East Melbourne on the 12th October 1924. The group gathered for the photograph were enjoying themselves at an annual Ithacan Picnic during the 1930s. The picnic was most likely held at Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh as it was the regular site for the picnic up until 1980 following which a move was made to the Ferny Creek Reserve, now the regular venue. Notable from early picnic photos is the effort that was made to dress for the picnic; men in suits and women in smart outfits.A black and white photograph of people standing in an sports ground. The group, members of the Kallinikos family, is on board a ship, possibly farewelling a relative who is departing Melbourne for a return visit to Ithaca. A few Ithacans travelled back home during the 1940s and 1950s, and overtime more families made the long 30 day boat trip to Greece. The advent of air travel travel made it easier for people to travel back home regularly and today those Australian born of Ithacan descent regularly visit the island.A black and white photograph taken on the deck of a ship while it is in port. The elderly female, Apostolo Raftopoulos, photographed with with her daughter (Anastasia) Tasia Florias and Tasia's then future daughter-in-law Joyia Raftopoulos. Joyia married Bill Florence (Vasili Florias). The male pictured, Bob Florence, is Bill Florence's brother. They were photographed in the village of Platrithia in 1949. Apostolo was from the Vrettos/Floria family from Kolieri/Exoghi and was married to Efstathios Raftopolous (Levendi). Bill and Joyia Florence are the parents of George Florence who owned and operated the Astor Theatre. George is a descendant of one of the early Ithacan families (Raftopoulos, Levendis) who migrated to Australia in the early years of the twentieth century and settled initially in Mildura. The dance group performed at a function which took place at Wilson Hall at the Melbourne University Campus in 1961. The ladies are from L-R: Nina Black, June Megalos, Olga Black, Katherine Black, Stella Stevens and Effie Megalos.The maintenance of Greek culture within Melbourne's Greek community has been assisted by the teaching of traditional music and folk dancing to the Australian born generations at the Greek schools and dance classes.
