Box, Princess Mary's Christmas Fund, 1914 (contents of Display Case)
The contents of this display case are known as Princess Mary’s Christmas Fund 1914. In October 1914 Princess Mary, the 17 year-old daughter of King George V and Queen Mary, launched an appeal to raise funds to produce a Christmas present for every person serving in the British and Allied Forces in World War One. The Christmas box was a silver one for officers and a brass one for other ranks. The box usually contained a packet of cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary but some boxes contained confectionery, notebooks, pencils etc. By Christmas 1914 200,000 boxes had been distributed but it took until 1920 to dispose of the 2,500,000 boxes that were produced. Many of the boxes given to Australian servicemen have survived but few contain any or all of the contents. It is not known to whom this box was sent. This box and its contents are of great interest as an important memento of Australian participation in World War One. This is a rectangular brass tin and its contents – two yellow cardboard boxes which originally held cigarettes and tobacco, a Christmas card and a photograph of Princess Mary. The five items are displayed within a rectangular wooden box with a removable glass top. The brass tin is embossed with an image in the centre of Princess Mary surrounded by a laurel wreath. The embossing includes the letter ‘M’ (twice) and the names of some of the allies of Britain in World War One. Christmas Card: ‘With Best Wishes for a Happy Christmas and a Victorious New Year from The Princess Mary and Friends at Home’ Cigarettes and Tobacco Boxes: ‘Her Royal Highness The Princess Mary’s Christmas Fund 1914’. warrnambool and world war one, princess mary’s christmas fund 1914 -

Minutes Book, Melbourne illustrated & Victoria described, c.1885
This book was given to Henry Huntingdon Smith in 1918 by a grateful sister of a soldier killed in World War One. Private Percy Palmer was listed as coming from the Warrnambool area even though his enlistment place was given as Bannockburn. H.H.Smith (1857-1941) is an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. He had a bakery business at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets. He was a Warrnambool Councillor and Mayor, a Hospital Committee member for 39 years, a Methodist church office-bearer and an active worker for the welfare of local returned soldiers. It was said that he greeted every returning soldier at the Warrnambool Railway Station. Mrs Sharpe was one of those who benefited from his solicitude and kindness. This is book is of antiquarian interest but more importantly it is a lovely memento of Henry Smith’s untiring concern for local soldiers returning from World War One and for their family members. This is a hard cover book of 38 pages. The cover is blue with gold lettering and gold ornamentation on the front and back covers. There are two sepia-coloured photographs of Melbourne at the front of the book and two blue stamps of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at the front and the back of the book. The pages of the book have become detached from the binding. The inscription at the front of the book is handwritten in purple ink. ‘Melbourne, Aug. 28, 1918, To Mr H. Document, ANZAC day commemoration services 2015, 2009,2012, 2013
These are programs for the commemoration ceremonies held in Warrnambool in recent years. Anzac Day, 25th April, has been a public holiday in Australia since 1927 and at first commemorated the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps troops who landed on the Gallipoli peninsula, in Turkish Thrace, the European section of Turkey, on 25th April 1915 and engaged in battle with the troops from the Ottoman Empire in World War One. Today Anzac Day commemorates all Australian and allied troops who fought for their country in world conflicts. The programs reflect the deep reverence Australians have for both Anzac Day and those who fought for us. These programs are of some interest as they represent the type of commemoration that takes place in Warrnambool each year on Anzac Day. The local people, like most others in Australia, hold Anzac Day as an important, if not the most important, national day. These three programs are for commemoration ceremonies in Warrnambool for Anzac Day, 2009, 2012 and 2013. Two of them are two A4 white sheets of paper folded in two to make 4 pages printed back to back and the other is a larger folded cream-coloured sheet containing four printed pages. The pages contain colour photographs of the Warrnambool War Memorial, printed material and an image of the Returned Services League of Australia badge on the front page. anzac day, warrnambool war museum -

Artefact_ World war 1 candle kit, World war One candle kit, C1915
These little tins were available for soldiers to buy before embarking to the first world war. As the candles and matches are contained within the tin , it would have been a ideal way to keep both dry. The lid of the tin could also have been useful as a windshield. The tin was donated in memory of Les Lawlor. James Leslie Lawlor was born in Mepunga and lived in Warrnambool and enlisted in October 1916. He was discharged as medically unfit as he had broken his wrist three years previously and the break had failed to heal well. The tin was donated in his memory by his sister Vera Maguire This item with its link to World War 1 soldiers has historical significance to Australians in general but is also a link to a local family. It is a complete object still with the candles and matches. Small rectangular tin box with image of three soldiers and tents in the background. Brown and yellow check pattern on sides and bottom. Book, The Rambler, 1942
... felt by Australians during the darkest days of World War Two ...These two items were sent in the 1940s to Tom Terrington of Framlingham ( about 28 kilometres north east of Warrnambool) from Donald Mackintosh. Tom Terrington (b. 1897) worked at various jobs until he took over the Framlingham store in the 1940s. He was a scholarly person with a wide knowledge of English literature. He wrote poetry and researched and wrote extensively on Framlingham history. Donald Mackintosh (1866-1951) was Australia’s first Olympic shooting gold medallist. He competed in trapshooting events all over the world, winning 30 gold medals, making a considerable amount of money and holding the world trapshooting championship title from 1903 to 1908. He was a keen photographer and wrote poetry under the name of ‘The Rambler’. This small folder is of great interest as it contains a poem sent to Tom Terrington by Donald Mackintosh (The Rambler). Tom Terrington is important in Framlingham’s history and his friendship with Donald Mackintosh, an Australian and world trapshooting champion and a poet is of considerable interest. The tone of the poem echoes also the despondency felt by Australians during the darkest days of World War Two. This is a piece of cream thickened paper folded in two with a typed copy of a poem pasted on the inside of the paper and a copy of a prose piece typed in ornate script and pasted on to a piece of cardboard and enclosed in the cream folder. Both of the typed items have handwritten messages at the bottom of the text. The cream folder is a little crumpled and stained. ‘The Rambler 1942-3’ ‘For T. Necklace Silver Lover's Knot, circa late 1800's
This "lovers" necklace is made from Sterling Silver and was imported into "the Colony" before the Australian Federation was enacted. This was a time when very close "bondage" between Australia and England was shown by the amount of "quality" products that were purchased, and the motto "Best of British" was truly still entwined in all aspects of rural live, from "British" mores and values "inherited from the "colonial days". It was only after World War II (when Britain could not help to defend Australia from the Japanese) that these long held mores were, through generations and generations, that the USA and Asian markets and goods replaced the "old" ties. This ladies silver necklace is very significant to the Kiewa Valley because it demonstrates the "rural" mores and values at a time(1800's to mid 1900's) when the "gap" between city and rural mores was very pronounced. That gap was maintain only through the degree of "isolation" (communication and physical interactions) between the two major types of "communities" and the evolving mores which each of them were going through. The social structure was just as pronounced in rural areas as it was in the cities. Fine jewelry was a "sparkling" affirmation of status and "wealth". The rural sectors had very wealthy sectors before the World Wars, when "Australia" was riding "on the sheep's back", but the increased mineral wealth exports and "big" industry of the cities started to forge ahead. This necklace is made from sterling silver and has four double bar and six lover's knots coupled to a silver chain. There is one silver double bar missing and may have been removed to reduce the length of the necklace. Sterling silver Hallmarks and Makers marks are stamped on the links and the clasp. The meaning of the horizontal twin bars have not yet been interpreted .Hall marks "PWC" and "AA"necklace, jewellery, sterling silver, lovers knot -

Slides, Box of Glass Slides Capital Theatre, 1940s
... the days of World War Two. The advertising slides are of particular ...These glass slides were made to be used at interval time at the Capitol Theatre in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. The Capitol Theatre (originally the Warrnambool Theatre) was erected in 1930 on the site occupied by the Hotel Mansions which included a Palais de Danse and a Mansions Theatre. All were destroyed by fire in 1929. The Capitol Theatre was built in the Spanish Mission style and is one of the few surviving Spanish Mission style theatres in Victoria. However the interior was largely altered in 1994 when the Capitol was converted into a three-screen complex. But some decorative features of the old interior were kept and these included the original proscenium. Stan Stevens and his family were associated with the Capitol Theatre management for many years from 1972. The Capitol Theatre still operates today. These slides are of considerable importance as they are a wonderful example of picture theatre-going in the 1940s and 50s when slides were shown during the interval times and many of these were locally made. The reason for showing the words of songs is not known but it is presumed they had sing-a-longs during the intervals, possibly to boost morale during the days of World War Two. The advertising slides are of particular interest and feature such local businesses as the Woollen Mill, Sungold Dairies, E.A. Wright Motors and Alex Donaldson Timber and Hardware Supplies. These are small square glass slides (numbered1 to 92) which were shown in the 1940s at the Capitol Theatre in Warrnambool at interval time (advertisements, words of songs etc). Some of the slides have been professionally produced and some, especially the words of songs, have been hand-made and handwritten or typed. Some are in colour and some are blank. In others the contents have been obscured or obliterated. Most of the slides have been taped around the edges and some have more sturdy frames made of tape. capitol theatre, warrnambool, stan stevens -

Photograph - Framed Photograph of Victoria Challenge Shield, George Edward & Sons, Glasgow, 1888
This framed photograph is of the Victoria Challenge Shield which was presented in 1888 by the Warrnambool firm of Cramond and Dickson for competition among the Victoria Garrison Artillery members in Victoria. There were 8 garrison groups in Victoria at that time. The shield was 22 inches wide and two feet six inches high. The quality of the shield can be gauged by that fact that it was exhibited at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888 and was one of the items inspected by Queen Victoria. The stipulation by the donors was that the competition had to be held in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool artillery group won the trophy in 1898 and this is noted in one of the newspaper cuttings included with the photograph of the shield. The Cramond and Dickson general store in Warrnambool was founded in 1855 by John Cramond and James Dickson and was a prominent business in Warrnambool until it closed in 1973. This photograph is of considerable interest as it is a reminder of the Victoria Challenge Shield that was a competition prize for competing groups of the Victoria Garrison Artillery in the times when volunteer militia groups were strong in Victorian country towns ( from the 1860s to the beginning of the First World War). This is a framed oval photograph of the Victoria Challenge Shield. The photograph is of poor production and fading. The shield details include images of War and Peace, Coat of Arms, militia figures and guns and a rifle match (in the centre). There are two newspaper cuttings included in the frame and a handwritten date. Clothing - Woman's kilt, Fletcher Jones and Staff, Warrnambool, 1980s
This is a woman's kilt (skirt, shawl and pin). Two of the objects were made by the Fletcher Jones clothing company. The Tartan is the Australian tartan which was designed by John Reid, a Melbourne architect, when he entered a competition run by the Scottish Australian Heritage Council. He chose the colours of the Outback as the basis of his tartan. The tartan is design registered in Australia (No. 97439). (Source: District Tartans, P. Smith and G Teall, 1992). This outfit was possibly made around 1990. David Fletcher Jones who served in World War One had a itinerant drapery business in the Western District before opening a tailoring business in Warrnambool in 1924.He began to specialise in men's clothing and in 1946 opened a shop in Melbourne. In 1948 he opened a clothing factory in Warrnambool and formed a new company Fletcher Jones and Staff. The company expanded to all states of Australia and included the manufacture of both men's and women's clothing making it one of the best known clothing companies in Australia. The Australian Comforts Fund was established in 1916 to co-ordinate the welfare efforts to assist Australian servicemen and women in World War One. It was dissolved in 1920 and re-established in 1939. It was staffed largely by women volunteers and supplied such articles as singlets, socks, pyjamas, toiletries, writing materials, tobacco and Christmas hampers to servicemen and women. It also offered recreational facilities and rest rooms etc in Australia for service personnel. It was closed in 1946. These badges were issued, two in 1941, as part of fund-raising for the Australian Comforts Fund. These badges are interesting mementos of the welfare work undertaken in World War Two by the Australian Comforts Fund.
