Three photos of the Historic Tall Ship 'Alma Doepel' at a beach and being viewed by a large group of children and adults. Presumably this was an outing for Junior Legatees to see the tall ship. The date is not known but Legacy has had a long relationship with the ship. The 1993 article in The Answer explains the ship offers 9 day voyages to approx 30 young people (15 to 18 year olds) and Legacy has sponsored 90 Junior Legatees in the first 3 years of the programme. 'Alma Doepel" is owned by Sail and Adventure Ltd, a Not for Profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of youth through sail training. The Alma Doepel is a three masted topsail schooner, Australian built and operated, with more than a hundred years of history behind her. She is currently under restoration in Docklands, Melbourne. Photos came from an envelope marked P8 Junior Legatee photographs, including the text "Photograph Alma Doepel". There was a program to send young legatees on trips on the Alma Doepel through the 1980s and 90s. The articles from the Answer show timetables and criteria for nomination of junior legatees to be selected on the trips. These eight books that make up The Victorian Readers, one for each of the grades that then comprised the primary school, were first published by the Victorian Education Department between 1928 and 1930. Second editions of all but the First Book, with a few changes in content, appeared some ten years later. One-quarter of the content was required to be Australian with the remainder from Britain, the United States and Europe. Beginning in the 1950s new Departmental publications gradually replaced the old books with the exception of the Fifth and Sixth books which survived until the late 1960s, when commercially-produced reading material finally took over in schools. William Buckley was born in 1780 at Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. After time as a bricklayer and soldier he was caught with stolen property, sentenced on 2 August 1802, and transported to Australia. Between October, 1803, and January, 1804, he escaped from Sullivan's Bay in the Port Phillip district and spent the next 32 years in the company of aborigines wandering between Port Phillip and the near western district as far as Lake Corangamite. This book is a replica of a booklet printed in the United Kingdom. In 1848, when it was published in London as a guide to prospective emigrants, 23,904 people left the United Kingdom for the Australian colonies and New Zealand. In 1847, with the failure of potato crops threatening famine in Ireland and growing political unrest at home, the British Government had once again encouraged emigration by offering free passage to candidates of 'good character'. Immigration, particularly by the labouring classes, was intended to relieve both the overburdened Mother Country and the colonies which had acute labour shortages. From the 18th Century museums and individuals have collected man's manufacturing work, the bottle. With the approval of the railways, in February1959 a special tourist train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the "Kanyana: Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria, to run from Colac to Beech Forest. Eight NBH carriages, in store at Newport, were transferred to Colac. The train proved to be so popular that additional trains were later run over the next two years until the temporarily disused Puffing Billy needed the NBH carriages returned.Locomotive G42, labelled "A.R.H.S., Special Excursion, Kanyana", with a guard's van, eight NBH excursion carriages and an additonal guard's van attached, stands at Gellibrand Station with a large group of passengers milling outside the train. On the 1st March, 1959, the first special train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the Kanyana Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria. It proved so popular that additional trains were later organized. On 24 March 1962 the special train marking the closure of the Colac-Beech forest railway line was again put on by the Australian Railway Historical Society, this time called the "Bye-Bye Beechie". It had G42 as the locomotive, eight NBH excursion carriages with NC guard's vans at either end, pulling a crowd of keen passengers. Special excursion trains until mid-1962.Colour. At the age of sixty-one Cliff Young, an unassuming potato farmer of Beech Forest, captured the imagination of the Australian people for his record-breaking five days, fifteen hours and four minutes it took him to run the 875 kilometres from Sydney to Melbourne. The previous record was one day, eighteen hours and forty-three minutes longer. Cliff runs with a shuffling gait, his arms hanging by his side, yet he waved to well-wishers throughout the journey. He's a country man with the dry humour of the bush.
