Wool bale from the last of the wool stockpile. The wool stockpile accumulated when the price of wool fell - growers were protected by a reserve price scheme (first established in 1974) which meant that the former Australian Wool Corporation purchased wool that did not meet the reserve price. The wool was kept until the prices rose. Unfortunately the stockpiled wool accumulated until the reserve price scheme collapsed in 1991. At its peak the wool stock pile reached 4.7 million bales. This particular bale is one of the last from the stockpile which has gradually diminished since 1991. This bale was part of a nine-bale lot from the clip of Richard Froomes (Seaspray, Gippsland) and was purchased by the Australian Wool Corporation from Brian Rodwell and Co. Pty Ltd's (stock and station agents) November 1989 catalogue. It is marked as bale no. 2 and carries Richard Froomes' 'Kullingral' brand, and is classed at AAAFM (best wool) and is 21.1 microns (see AWTA certificate in supp. file). The 'Kullingral' branded bales were from a 3500 head fine wool flock, based on Merryville and The Fringe bloodlines. Temple's Store was on the corner of Ruskin and Nicholson Streets opposite the post office. He packed stores to the Bendoc area goldfields. These are the Probate papers for Patrick Mahony, a farmer from Wangoom who died in 1894. He left an estate of £995 and personal effects worth £138. The estate was to be administered by the two sons, William and Timothy in trust for another son, Michael Mahony. The wife Margaret was granted three acres of land, £25 a year and ‘the choice of two cows out of my stock’. The daughter Johanna was to receive the same benefits after the death of her mother. Patrick Mahony, being illiterate, signed his will with a cross. Tait collection: item 12 of 62This document is of interest as it concerns a local farmer, Patrick Mahony and a local lawyer, William Ardlie. The latter had a practice in Warrnambool for the best part of seventy years, firstly in Timor Street and then in Kepler Street. He was a prominent resident in Warrnambool. The document was originally in the hands of the law clerk, Thomas Goodall and it was passed on to lawyers occupying the Kepler Street premises until it was found in the buildings once used by the law firm of Mackay Taylor. This is a piece of parchment paper, folded in two with writing in black ink on all four pages. There is a seal of the Supreme Court of the Colony of Victoria attached with a green ribbon and three red stamps of the Master in Equity in the Supreme Court. Historically(1920 to 1927), this ledger not only details the legible hand writing of this era but also the day to day commercial activity in the Kiewa Valley region. The neatness and the diligence of those who were required to pen the information into this ledger was a requirement by all who were involved in commercial trade be it in the city or in the rural area. Emphasis on neatness was ingrained in students at a young age. This era was well before general commercial stock computer based inventories. Generally all students of commerce required an accuracy in writing and arithmetic. Neatness and order were a "selection criteria" requirementThis item clearly identifies the Kiewa Valley as having a substantial financial hub to accommodate the various commercial enterprises within a rural environment Circa 1880's. Although Kiewa Valley had mining, agriculture, cattle and sheep it was also composed of a mixed society, encompassing all levels of society at that period. It identifies some the commercial activities(newsagency) undertaken by specific families farming in the Kiewa Valley and relates their history in the period of 1920 to 1927This ledger has a very thick cover of strong compressed cardboard. It has a cloth covering (Glued on) and is a faded blue colour. The corners of the opening side of the cover are reinforced by suede cloth,in a triangular shape, and enclose both the front and inside portions of the the ledger. The spin is reinforced by a suede section to provide increased strength and protection. The inside cover (both front and back) has an orange and brown bubbles and specks pattern. The grammage of the lined sheets (blue) is approximately 120g/m. The first twelve pages are indented and alphabetically marked with alternating red and black letters (two letters per page except for the last page which has three letters). The remaining pages are numbered in black print at the top outside edge of each page. There are 742 page numbers. Each page has thirty two blue horizontal lines and one double red line (second from top) Each page has thirteen vertical lines starting from the top horizontal double red lines and ending at the bottom of the page. These lines segregate the page into blocks for the date, the transaction and financial input. This ledger was used initially by H. James & Co., Shipping and General Commission agents in Orbost in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Henry James (1860-1932) was a well-known identity in the Orbost district.He was a stock agent and auctioneer. H. James proved a very keen businessman and did well. He eventually formed agencies, conducted an auctioneering business and controlled the bean market. This engine was a Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) build, and had been upgraded to 92 specification at some time. This engine as acquired, was completely seized and great difficulty was encountered in dismantling it. The pistons in Nos 1, 13, 3, 2 and 5 had "grown" into the cylinder bores requiring some unorthodox methods to remove them. The cylinder barrels have been brought up to a reasonable standard, those beyond repair were replaced from stock. After getting various parts from the US, this engine was eventually brought up to running order.The Pratt & Whitney R 1830 is a double row 14 cylinder air cooled radial engine with a capacity of 1830 cubic inches, (30 litres), developing some 1200 horsepower at a maximum 2700 rpm.Engine Number 54828

Delivery cart of Mr & Mrs W J Atkinson’s greengrocery business and general store near the corner of Whitehorse and Elgar Roads, c 1930. Emma Uebergang and William James Atkinson married in 1930. They ran a mixed business in Whitehorse Road from 1926-1952. Stock included fruit and vegetables, sweets and some groceries. With Mr Atkinson is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries. To the left can be seen Whitehorse Road as it approaches the shopping centre and over the back of the horse can be seen the White Horse Hotel. Beehive buildings. This was originally the Sandhust Mining Exchange and as such was the oldest purpose built exchange in Australia and was one of only two in regional Australia. It was initially established in the 1850's to service the miners of the area. It's first double story incarnation as the Bendigo Stock Exchange, contained up to 2000 stockbrokers and 5000 shareholders. In 1871 the building burnt to the ground and the new and current building was completed in 1872. Melbourne’s next-generation trams, G-class, have been designed to be easily repaired with improved visibility for drivers. A prototype has been completed and will be tested by a range of groups before testing on the network in 2025. Department of Transport and Planning’s head of rolling stock development, Ben Phyland, said this redesign was a response to the number of crashes in Melbourne and after consultation with tram drivers. In 2022, there were 960 collisions involving trams and cars, including 166 considered serious – an average of three crashes each day and a 60 per cent increase on 2021. Grampians Entrance to Halls Gap. Part of a collection of Photographs by Mr. O.G. Armstrong as commissioned by the Shire of Stawell for the Inter-colonial and Paris Exhibition in Melbourne in 1866. Halls Gap is named after Charles Browning Hall. In his letter to Joseph Latrobe he gives no clue about his early life except that he was a stock herder as early as 1837. He held two runs in the Wimmer district, that of La Rose and Mokebila in the Grampians (1841 to 1842). He then moved to the Clunes area in 1851. Roderick William Mills, known as Saltbush Bill (left) with his sons, James Charles Mills (centre) and John James Mills (right), in London. In 1917 Saltbush Bill travelled from America to London after giving shows in various cities of the US, to spend time with his sons. James and John Mills were serving with the AIF and on leave from the French front in London. Saltbush Bill remained in London for the rest of the war as he was unable to return to Australia. Saltbush Bill, was the inspiration for several poems by A.B. Paterson. Born at Balnarring in 1869, Mills earned the title of Saltbush Bill whilst working on a cattle station in Queensland. On these long droving trips, he learnt the art of cracking stock whips of many different lengths and sizes, a skill that earnt him £100 after a Melbourne saddler, J.K. Jennings, suggested that no man could crack a 65-foot stock whip in three tries. Saltbush Bill succeeded on his first attempt and decided to make a career in entertainment with his skill. Over his career he performed for royalty, travelled and performed extensively overseas and lent his skill to fundraising efforts, particularly during the war. His last concert was given in the Boomerang Hall in Dandenong in 1926.A local resident of the City of Moorabbin, Saltbush Bill was an ambassador for Australia and a literary inspiration to A.B. (Banjo) Paterson. Saltbush Bill, his wife Hannah Louise Porter and their 11 children lived in Old Dandenong Road, Heatherton, where Saltbush Bill and Hannah conducted a market garden for many years.
