Kew Historical Society IncAlbum, Louisa G Thomas, Victorian Era Sketchbook, 1862
... Louisa Thomas married Henry Gipps (1837-91)in 1863. They had six sons and two daughters. ...Kew Historical Society Inc Kew Court House 188 High Street Kew melbourne Louisa Thomas married Henry Gipps (1837-91)in 1863. They had six sons and two daughters. ...Louisa Thomas married Henry Gipps (1837-91)in 1863. They had six sons and two daughters. While Louisa and Henry Gipps were to die in Sussex, two of their sons, Frederick George De Visme Gipps (1867-1953) and Richard Brook Woodthorpe Gipps (c.1872-1946) migrated to Queensland, possibly bringing with them their mother’s sketchbook. The collection of artworks that are included in the sketchbook are often of outstanding aesthetic and artistic significance. In the variety of subject matter and the geographical places represented, it is historically significant as a document recording the postings of Colonel Henry Gipps, 9th Norfolk Regiment, and his wife Louisa to locations in the Mediterranean and West Asia. The large bound sketchbook has a marbled cover with blue binding. The name Louisa Goulburn Thomas and the date 1862 are faintly inscribed in pencil on the front page. However the book contains pen and ink and pencil drawings, watercolours, and photographs, which both predate and postdate 1862. The approximately 75 works are loose-leafed items and [currently] do not form a chronological, geographical or thematic sequence. Creators identified on some drawings and watercolours include Mary Julia Wilder Thomas, JFV Wright, ELG (Edward Louis de Bondell Gipps?), L Nicholson, Bertha Isadore Thomas, and HG (Henry Gipps?). Many of the works are signed and dated, and include rural landscapes and seascapes, archaeological sites, animal studies, and portraits. While most of the works were created in the British Isles, others are scenes of Venice, the Ionian Islands, Cape Town, Hong Kong and Japan. [A number of the ‘oriental’ paintings on silk were probably purchased from local artists.] The art works in the book are at various stages of completion and represent a diverse range of artistic skills. What may be the earliest work in the sketchbook is a drawing of three uniformed soldiers. An annotation on the reverse records that the drawing is of a Group of Soldiers after [Philipp Jakob] de Southerbourg 1830. The birth of Louisa Thomas' oldest son, William Henry Houston Meyrick Gipps (1864-1903) in Corfu perhaps explains why a number of scenes and items in the album are of the Ionian Islands. Louisa is probably the creator of a number of still life and botanical studies in the album. These range from floral studies to a bird’s nest. The painting of objects was to remain a socially ‘approved’ specialty of amateur and professional women artists into the 20th century. The complete contents of the album will be uploaded to accompany this record. Some items may be published separately on Victorian Collections, but will acknowledge their origins in the sketchbook."Louisa Goulburn Thomas / 1862"victorian sketchbooks, manuscripts - kew historical society, 9th norfolk regiment, rosemary (gipps) vaughan smith, vaughan-smith collection -

Flagstaff Hill divers recovered the bricks from Childers Cove in February 1974 and noted, “These bricks are the major feature of the wreck site. Subsequent notes indicate “The hull structure has broken up, leaving few visible remains, except for piles of house bricks intended for the Hentys of Portland”. According to Lloyds Shipping Register 1837-1839, the CHILDREN was built in 1825 at Liverpool and operated by owners Gordon & Co, of London, London registered number 123/1837; James Henty then bought her in 1837 as a three-masted barque of 254 tons, with a hull of “part pitch pine, felt sheathed” and “coppered 1837”. Launceston registered number 6/1837. In 1838, the CHILDREN, under her master Captain H. Browne, completed a successful round trip from Launceston to London carrying wool and whale oil loaded in Portland, returning in late November of that year carrying general cargo, including house bricks. On the 11th of January 1839, the CHILDREN sailed from Launceston for Adelaide, with 24 passengers, 14 crew, and an awkward mixed cargo, including 1500 sheep, 8 bullocks, 7 horses, farming implements, and six whaleboats with associated whaling gear. One account states that when the CHILDREN “put out from port, it was light and badly ballasted”. The vessel immediately encountered four days of hurricane-force storms, eventually clearing on the early morning of the 14th to “west force 10”, but too late to take accurate measurements of the sun or stars to establish their position relative to the coast. The CHILDREN collided with a limestone stack at the entrance of Childers Cove, and the seas smashed her into pieces within half an hour. All the cargo and 16 lives were lost (including 9 children). The Hentys contributed £150 towards a fund for the 22 survivors at a memorial service held in Launceston later that year. It was a major financial setback for the Hentys, but one from which they recovered. In a submission to the Governor of New South Wales dated 24 March 1840, the Hentys summarised their work over the previous six years of settlement: “Six stations have been occupied, one at Portland Bay…three at the open country about 60 miles inland called ‘Merino Downs’…They have erected two houses at Portland Bay and two others at Merino Downs”.These bricks are significant as a sample of 5000 house bricks carried from London as ballast by the Children and were intended for the Portland Bay settlement of her owners, James Henty & Co. The 1839 wreck and recovered artefacts are examples of the construction methods and materials used in that era and can be used to study the evolution of shipbuilding methods and principles. The wreck of the Children is of state significance as one of colonial Victoria’s earliest and most significant maritime disasters, and one of the first vessels lost in the Western District. This is recognised by its inclusion on the Victorian Heritage Register, VHR No. S116. Little is left on the seabed to mark the tragedy, apart from some of the house bricks intended for the Henty settlement. Five ‘house bricks from London’, some with white marine encrustation, recovered from the wreck of the ship CHILDREN. The bricks are oblong shaped and constructed of a blue-coloured and coarse-grained conglomerate. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. Nicholas Caire was active as a photographer in Australia from 1858 until his death in 1918. Most buildings in VEMUP0008 are also in this image, but there are some in that on which are not visible here - though they may simply be out of frame. There also appear to be less trees than in the 1907 photograph, appearing somewhat more similar to 1909. In 1908, a large bushfire threatened Emerald, putting Archibald & Moffatt's store at risk (with it igniting and being put out several times) alongside many other buildings in and around town - and destroying the town's church. It is possible this photograph was taken not long after that fire, in the early 1910s. It is also possible it was instead from earlier than this, but the telegraph line clearly visible in this photograph don't appear to be visible in the 1907 and 1909 pictures (though these pictures are also unclear. Tentatively I would date this to the early 1910s.This image forms part of the record of the historical development of Emerald. This item is a black and white photograph printed on glossy photo paper. The reverse features printed technical information, Fujifilm logos, and a handwritten accession number. The image depicts an unsealed road with a shop on the foreground on the right; a telegraph line runs across the right side of the road, and a gas lamppost stands in front of the shop. There are more buildings in the background on the left. Four individuals are standing in front of the store on the right. That store has a sign printed on the side facing the camera.Obverse, Lower Left: "EMERALD" Obverse, Sign in Image: "ARCHIBALD & MOFFAT / GROCERS" Reverse, Printed Technical Information: "J9505398 2/6 <> 00000002.jpg / JOB3819505398 Emerald early 2.jpg Kevin+"1910s, emerald, commerce, archibald & moffatt -

Postcards were posted or exchanged in huge numbers. Postal authorities in Australia only allowed the private printing of postcards from 1898. At this time the back of the card was reserved for the address and postage stamp, and the front was used for the message and a picture. In 1902 British authorities allowed a "divided back", so that the left side could be used for the message, the right side for the address and stamp, and the whole of the front was devoted to the picture. France followed suit in 1904, Germany and Australia in 1905, and the United States in 1907. - Frost, Lenore; Dating Family Photos 1850-1920; Valiant Press Pty. This c. 1907 photograph was taken from the intersection of Beaconsfield Road (now Kilvington Drive) and Station Road (now Puffing Billy Place), looking towards Emerald Railway Station. ...There are seven other copies of this photograph in our collection, mostly differing in the placement of the label and the cropping of the photograph. This is itself a copy of the original. One of these copies is also accessioned as VEMUP0456.2. This c. 1907 photograph was taken from the intersection of Beaconsfield Road (now Kilvington Drive) and Station Road (now Puffing Billy Place), looking towards Emerald Railway Station. It looks past the Emerald Coffee Palace, a significant establishment serving coffee, wine, and more - a room in the back was even used as a visiting doctor's surgery. The Coffee Palace was, at the time, owned by the O'Connor family and run by Mrs Greatorex. At this time it was relatively new - the second centre of Emerald, around Kilvington Drive, mostly materialised thanks to the location of the railway station. The location of the railway is visible, but from this angle the station and tracks are not visible. Note the posts in front of the Palace - used to tie horses in this time before cars became dominant. There are elevated wires visible running along the left side of the street, which resemble power lines but at this time are more likely to have instead been telegraph cables. This copy was framed in the donor's home after being gifted to him by its previous owner, who bought it from an op-shop in Melbourne. This photograph recounts the growth of Emerald's second town centre around the railway station. This item is a large, slightly yellowed, black and white copy of an older photograph. It depicts an unpaved street leading down a hill to a gate and fence, with several shops to either side. There is a lamp post on the street corner on the right, and a telegraph line running along the left side. In the background, the slope rises back up to a hill with fields and scattered trees.Bottom-right: "STATION RD.
