Documents, Childer's Cove, 1920-1940's
Childers Cove is situated about 15 ks east of Warrnambool in the area known as Mepunga. It is named after the shipwreck of 'The Children.The documents relate to the running of the Childer's Cove Progress Association. There are a number of social activities including gymkhanas, racing meetings, making of roads and improving with planting trees There are many names which are still familiar with the area nearly 100 years later, including Wallace, McDowall, Burleigh, Murnane, Bonnett, Abraham Laidlaw Keogh Holloway and Palmer. Some of the meetings were held at the Mepunga South School with others held at Eckers Hotel Warrnambool and some at the race course. Fundraising events were held also from athletic meetings and district school children's races. This collection of papers is representative of many small communities around Australia where people came together and worked to improve their community facilities. It therefore has strong social and historic significance.This is a collection of papers most of which relate to the Childer's Cove Progress Association. Camberwell Girls Grammar School was from 1927-1929 called St Mark's Church of England Girls' Grammar School. The School moved from St Mark's Church Camberwell to Torrington House in Torington Street, Canterbury VICTORIA in 1927.This image is one of the few held just after the School's relocation from St Mark's Church to its current site at 2 Torrington Street, Canterbury Victoria in 1927. Miss Elizabeth Lockley was Headmistress of the School from December 1920 - December 1927. She continued on at the school as head of the Junior School until she retired in 1935. -

The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company Limited was established in 1888 at Allansford and remained as an independent dairy manufacturer until 2014 when it was taken over by Canadian company Saputo. The factory was burnt in 1929 and all records lost. This booklet is a reprint of the original.Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Company Ltd was the earliest dairy manufacturer registered in Victoria. Registered in May 1888, it commenced processing in November 1888. The town is located on the Cann River at the junction of the Princess Highway and the Monaro Highway, in the Shire of East Gippsland. Before 1929 the original Cann River settlement was where Noorinbee now stands.Agricultural shows are an important part of cultural life in small country towns and these shows form an integral part of local history. Alexina Weller was the first wife of Reverend Weller. They arrived in Melbourne in January 1925. They lived in the Mission's Manse for 4 years. Alexina was part of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. They left in January 1929 for South America. She died in January 1934.The organ was donated in memory of Mrs Weller as a member of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild. This model was constructed by Dudley Timmins at the age of 83 in 1996. Dudley drove his father's bullock team at the age of 16. His teams consisted of 16 bullocks per team. The model represents the team which was used in the Orbost area in 1928-1929 .This is a hand-crafted item which reflects the time of the bullock wagons used in the timber industry in the Orbost area.A hand-crafted model of a bullock jinker carrying logs. Thomas Crouch Watts was born on March 7th. 1865, to Joseph and Susan Watts. Before the real estate business commenced, Thomas and his brother were in partnership as booksellers and stationers in a shop at View Point. Thomas lived in a fine house in Rowan Street, which was called 'Ottawa' Thomas started his real estate business in the early 1900s in a shop in View Street. His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. From a letter from Edith Lunn re T.C. Watts & Son. 'The firm of T.C. Watts & Son later became Bishop and Earl. When the firm of Bishop and Earl ceased to operate after the death of Edith Lunn's father, S.P. Bishop, Miss. June Parry, Secretary of the BHS was a member of staff. June rescued all the photos of properties listed for sale from the office and placed them into the custody of the BHS.' Black and white original photograph mounted on rectangular grey board.
