In May 1904, a ‘poster fair’ was enjoyed by attendees at the the Victoria Hotel and Theatre, Tarnagulla. It included a range of stalls where ‘about 30 young ladies, who had charge of the various stalls, wore costumes with advertisements of local and metropolitan business firms’ to raise funds for the new Church of England parsonage. A commemorative plaque from the old Wodonga Golf House, built in 1946. The club house and the golf course were extended in 1956 to the area of Belvoir Park. It was demolished in 1987 to make room for the new Hume Highway. This plaque was salvaged from the club house building before demolition. Warrnambool’s first Palais was established in the Hotel Mansions on the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets and destroyed by fire in 1929. The second Palais was established at the Liberty Theatre in Lava Street. The third Palais was established in the Oddfellows Hall building in Koroit Street in 1939. Dances were held weekly and sometimes more often and attracted musical talent from the Warrnambool district and even from Melbourne with band leaders such as Tommy Davidson and Vin Mills. In 1974 the Warrnambool City Council bought the building and it was used only intermittently for entertainment purposes. Today the building is in private hands and is used for commercial and business purposes. This advertisement is of considerable significance as it comes from the Palais de Danse dance theatre which was important as a social institution in Warrnambool for over 30 years. The advertisement also reminds us of the era (1940s, 50s, 60s) when beauty pageants and Belle of the Ball competitions were popular all over Australia. This is a document in a brown plastic frame with a gold-coloured metal inside edging. The frame has a glass front. The document is a 1954 advertisement for the Palais de Danse dance floor in the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street, Warrnambool. The advertisement has black and red printing on a buff-coloured background. The photograph was taken at the Sunbury Fair possibly in 1977 when Bert Kelly, who is the man in the foreground, was the Shire President. Every year in March the Shire of Bulla held the fair in which community groups participated in a parade in the morning and the afternoon was given over to entertainment by local groups and displays on the Village Green. The lady, wearing a dark patterned dress and standing immediately behind Bert Kelly is Shirley McKerrow. Mrs Mommsen is standing next to him and the young man 2nd from extreme right is Graham Gibb. Fortuna Villa: George Lansell pursued the deep reef mining industry and bought the rich 180 mine at Victoria Hill, after which he became known as the Quartz King. Within weeks of purchasing the mine he had recovered his outlay. After making so much money, he built Fortuna Villa, a resplendent building of two stories - six rooms on the ground floor and five on the second floor. A rare travelling piano numbered no. 26 made by James Semple circa 1850s, one of only three left in the world. The piano's maker, James Semple, was a piano maker in Glasgow, from 1850-1875 and the inscription indicates that Semple held a patent for a check on the downstriking action. This little piano has a keyboard of only 4 octaves (F-f3) knee levers instead of pedals work as a moderator and damper. It was designed to provide entertainment and to accompany devotions during the long journey from the UK to Australia. The piano was named the travelling piano due to its ease of transportation with handles on each end and removable legs. Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from 2000. Fortuna villa: originally a resplendent villa of two storeys comprising six rooms in the ground floor and five on the second. It was situated beside the New Chum line of reef and was of 350 square metres. In 1887 Fortuna was enlarged with the addition of a mansard between the billiard and music rooms. The entrance hall was demolished and replaced with the hall which stands today. Work continued until 1904 by which time Fortuna was three storeys high. The building was befitting any prince, and soon became an entertainment centre for notable visitors to Bendigo. This is a 1985 invitation to the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment in 1935 of the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums group. The event was called a ‘ceilidh’, a celebration featuring Scottish songs, music, dance and other entertainment. The Warrnambool Pipes and Drums Inc.was originally formed as the Warrnambool Pipe Band in 1906 with the object of popularising Scottish music and in particular bagpipe music. Simon Fraser was the first Pipe Major (1906-1910) and the group featured in early events in the town, including the annual Highland Gatherings and street marches and celebrations. The group was in recess from 1916 to 1935 when it was re-formed. It has been in existence since then except for a short recess during World War Two. This card is of interest as a souvenir of a 1985 invitation to the 50th anniversary celebration of the re-formation of the Warrnambool Pipes and Drums organization in 1935. This group is important in the musical life of Warrnambool today. This is a white card with a blue border, blue printing and a logo featuring a belt, a tree and the motto, ‘Stand Sure’.
