Part of a photo album (Cat.No. 01588), with a photo of Donovan Joynt and Queen Elizabeth II reading from a pamphlet he is holding. Another copy of this photo is marked as 17 March 1977, it is believed to when the Queen visited Royal Park. It is unknown who the veteran on the right is. Queen Elizabeth visited Melbourne as part of her Silver Jubilee tour of Australia and attended a children's rally in Royal Park wearing this outfit. A crowd of 18,000 people greeted her. Footage of the visit can be seen in National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NSFA-ID 44325). William and Ann Swinton came to Warrnambool in 1854. William was a carpenter and established a general store in Warrnambool in 1865. By 1888 the firm was known as William Swinton & Sons. After William died in 1901 the business was known as Swintons Pty. Ltd. After 1934 there were two branches of the business, George Swinton & Son and Swintons Pty. Ltd. These labels are of interest because Swintons stores have been of utmost importance in Warrnambool's history.Today it is one of the oldest family businesses in Australia.1 Rectangular paper label with white inner rectangle with black text surrounded by dark green, checked red and dark green gold coloured borders.It is adhered to a piece of white paper. N. J. Tillings Timber Factory was part of the Brougham Street, Light industrial area, Eltham. This is one of 7 B/W 8x10 inch photos with notes on obverse by Dick Crichton. Accompanying letter from Florence Chrichton 2013 : "Originally sent to Shire of Eltham Engineer, Mr. McDonald. [These photographs were part of their campaign to the Shire of Eltham in 1975] claiming that the zoning regulations were being breached by the occupants of various factories in the nearby light industrial zone [Brougham Street, Eltham] - to the detriment of those living in adjoining residential zones, and that, despite .. earlier objections and complaints, nothing was done about it." One page handwritten document titled Victoria Hill, it's historical connections. Extract from document: Gold first found in 1853 by two colored men, one named Weymouth or 'Dido'. Sold out to Theodore Ballerstedt senior, who in Deember 1853 was known as the 'Father of the Hill'. In the first six years, this Hill produced more than $1,200,000 worth of gold and this in a period when crushing with crude appliances cost $13 a ton instead of $0.50c to 80 cents per ton, and unskilled men were receiving $2.00 per day instead of 75 cents a day for practical miners some years later.bendigo, mining, victoria hill -

Photograph, Black and White, of the Level Crossing in Epsom Road, Flemington or Ascot Vale showing the overhead arrangement and structures either side of the road to provide power to either the trams or the trains. The small signal box is in the view as well as the interlocked gates. A NMETL saloon tram is crossing the railway lines. Photo late 1919 or 1920. Has the words "VR Tramway Crossing at Epsom Rd showing insulators in tram line and special crossing fitting." The level crossing was electrified on 18-8-1919 and abolished mid 1925 when the underpass was built. Keith Kings, the photographer has extensive notes hand written on the slide - that the tram was scrapped on 17/7/1959 and that it was the first W2 to be scrapped. Probably the last time 313 was photographed. This file contains four items: 1/Two typed lists of the names and years of circulation of Elsternwick and Caulfield Newspapers held at the Caulfield Library, the first with amendments in ballpoint pen and the second a revised version of the first dated 12/07/1988. Also included in the item is a typed list of what appears to be issues of the Southern Cross newspaper held at the library and an original handwritten list with a black and white photocopy of newspapers held at the Caulfield Library, dated 11/09/1988. These were provided by Gladys Vallati (longtime member; Head Librarian of Caulfield Library for many years). 2/Two extracts from the Caulfield Historical Society Newsletters (issues April 1975 No 15 and June 1975 No 16) detailing newspapers published and or circulated in Caulfield that are held at the State Library of Victoria, both undated and author unknown. The first has some handwritten annotations and a minute from the first meeting of the Caulfield Road Board on 25/11/1857 on the reverse side, listing the surnames of those present. Also included in the item is a typed draft for one of the extracts. 3/A six page handwritten list of newspapers circulated in the area of Caulfield held in Australian libraries, taken from a Union List dated 1967 in the Canberra National Library, author unknown. Details given of the newspapers include the title and dates of issue, in some cases also listing the merging of newspapers and ceasing of publication. Walter Bruce Nixon (20.11.1934-8.9.2012) lived at Yarra Glen and was a bus line owner. He also ran a company, Tarcoola Press, which published books on the history of the Nillumbik and Yarra Valley area, and generously supported organisations such as the Andrew Ross Museum and the C J La Trobe Society. A young chemist named Dr. Cyril P Callister, hired by the Fred Walker Company, developed a new spread from brewer’s yeast. It was claimed as the richest known sources of natural Vitamin B. Labelled as ‘Pure Vegetable Extract’, it was sold in a two ounce amber glass jar and capped with what was known as a Phoenix seal, to keep the contents fresh. A competition inviting the Australian public to create a name for the new spread offered a prize of 50 pounds. finalists. Hundreds of people entered and Fred Walker’s daughter selected the winning name: VEGEMITE. The name of the winning entrant was never placed on record. VEGEMITE spread was then sold from grocers’ shelves. In April 1984, a 115-gram jar of vegemite became the first product in Australia to be electronically scanned at a checkout A commemorative jar was produced to celebrate the occasion of 70 years - 1922-1997.Vegemite is possibly Australia's most iconic food brand. The fruit juice or lemon squeezer is a small kitchen utensil designed to extract juice from lemons or other citrus fruit such as oranges, grapefruit, or lime. It is designed to separate and crush the pulp of the fruit in a way that is easy to operate. Lemon squeezers can be made from any solid, acid-resistant material, such as plastic, glass, metal (usually aluminum) or ceramic. The oldest known lemon squeezers were found in Kütahya, Turkey and date to the first quarter of the 18th century. These ceramic presses are in the traditional style of Turkish pottery of the 18th century and have a superficial resemblance to today's press equipment with cones, though they are designed differently. These examples were individually made, and specially designed for making the then popular citrus drink sorbet. Lemons are not native to northern Turkey, though during the 17th and 18th centuries they were imported in bulk to Constantinople.The fruit juice press is an example of early 20th century kitchen utensils and is not associated with an historical event, person or place, provenance is unable to be determined at this time and the item is believed to have been made around 1900. This item is currently being used in Flagstaffs Hill village display and regarded as significant as it demonstrates domestic kitchen utensils used around the turn of the 19th century and today is a collectable item. This book is an early school reader for the Fifth Grade. It appears to be a British publication and has no Australian content (except for a brief biography of Captain Cook). The name ‘Matilda F.’ from Mailors Flat can probably be identified as Matilda Freckleton as the Freckleton family members were prominent settlers in the Mailors Flat area in the early 20th century. Matilda Freckleton (1886-1957) was the daughter of Francis and Catherine Freckleton. She married Calvin Chambers in 1906. This book is of minor interest as it is an example of an early school reader and it probably belonged to an early Mailors Flat resident, Matilda Freckleton. This is a soft cover book of 414 pages. The original front cover has been lost and a piece of grey cardboard has been used as its replacement. The back cover was originally a brown colour. The spine is now covered with a piece of grey material stitched on to part of the original spine. Some front and back pages are missing. The text has three sections and these contain prose extracts, stories, poems, hymns and work exercises. There are some black and white illustrations. A couple of pages are loose. Pasted in at the front and back pages are cuttings from newspapers. The handwritten material is in blue ink and pencil. Notes on formal opening of the 105 head battery, water supply and the Christening of the 6 engines connected with the battery by one of Mr Lansell's children. Another extract is from the Bendigo Advertiser dated Tuesday December 5th 1893 Page 3.
