David Douglas (1799-1834) journeyed to the Pacific North-West as well as to other parts of the New World looking for new species of plants. The Royal Horticultural Society of London hoped to introduce new and exciting plants to its gardens.After Douglas's explorations in the New World, hundreds of new species became available. As a result flower beds and theme gardens with new exotic specimens and aboreta became fashionable. One of the pockets contained an envelope with a medical certificate for Laura Batch, presumably to get an extension on the assessment. This was disposed of for privacy.
