The Hiawatha was a Norwegian windjammer sailing from Fredrikstadt. End of September 1910 the ship arrive nearly two weeks before its anticipated arrival date, making the trip in 81 days instead of a 100. Her arrival made the news in the Argus : SHIP HIAWATHA : A SMART VOYAGE. Seeing that she was not expected to arrive here for another couple of weeks or so the appear ance of the Norwegian ship Hiawatha at Port Phillip Heads yesterday morning caused some surprise. It was anticipated by shipping folk that her voyage from Fredrikstadt would occupy about 100 days which is a fair average passage but clipping a big slice off this allowance, the Hiawatha completed her long run from the Nor wegian port in the excellent time of 811/2 days, or within about 36 hours of the best effort previously made by a "windjammer" between these ports. An appropriate finish was given by the Hiawatha to this creditable voyage by a run of a little under three hours from the Heads up to Hobson's Bay, where she dropped anchor at about noon amid squalls of rain, which at times almost blinded her out from view. Few more 'racy' looking sailors than the Hiawatha have visited this port, and as she has proved on the present and many previous occasions sions, her looks do not belie her. Being laden with Baltic timber and in splendid sailing trim, the ship only required favourable winds to make a good voyage. These fell to her lot, and taking full advantage of every opportunity the vessel bowled across the ocean at steamboat speed. Reckoned from the time she cleared the English Channel, her passage occupied only 76 days. Her best work was performed after passing Tristan d'Acunha in the South Atlantic Ocean. From that stage to the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope she was only a week, whilst from the latter point to Hobson's Bay the ship made an equally capital run of 27 days, her best daily record being 29 knots, representing an hourly average speed of 12 knots. Several periods of exceptionally rough weather were passed through, but the ship suffered no ill effects. Taken between circa 1920 - 1950 this photograph depicts the open mine in the Three Mile Mine at Barramutha. The mine was an important gold resource and was typically mined using a method known as hydraulic sluicing whereby high powered water jets are used to dislodge rock or move sediment. The remaining water sediment slurry is directed through sluice boxes to remove the gold. The Beechworth mining district was one of six mining districts established by the governor-in-council on 4th of January 1858 under the provisions of An Act for Amending the Laws Relating to the Goldfields (21 Vic no. 32).This photograph shows cultural and research value into the historical methods of hydraulic sluicing in the Beechworth mining disctrict. Frederick Perkin Stevens was a prominent in business and community matters. He also presented the peal of three German bells in 1881 as a memorial to his and Jane’s son.. These windows are among the earliest stained glass windows in Christ Church and because of their position make a strong visual impact in the church. Further, Frederick later married Emma Bews, sister-in-law of the Reverend Peter Tuelen Beamish, first Vicar of the Parish of Warrnambool (for a period of 45 years 1850-1895,), thus consolidating his association with the church. Three lancet stained-glass windows, east wall, main nave, above the High Altar. Presented by Frederick Perkins STEVENS in memory of his wife Jane (nee RULE), born abt 1821, died 1868. The windows from left to right depict the Baptism, Crucifixion and Ascension of Jesus. Transversing the lower section is a depiction of the Last Supper. Murray Valley Coaches was a renowned coach company formed in the 1930’s, headquartered in Mildura, which by the early 50’s had an extensive network of service offerings, primarily centring around long distance (regular) coach services and tours. With advances in technology and manufacturing processes for heavy vehicles, decreased journey times and increased passenger comfort was suddenly achievable. All this meant many far places were now reachable and widely accessible within a day or two, resulting in a surge in demand for long distance passenger coach services. Murray Valley Coaches capitalised on these new opportunities in 1945 when they began operating regular coach services between Bendigo and Mildura. By the late 40’s, the route was just a small portion of an expansive network, with frequent services from Mildura to Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney, amongst others. However, with the rise of popularity in the motor car in the early 50’s (due to increased affordability), the company began to experience financial hardship. This saw the sale of the Bendigo – Mildura route on July 1st, 1954 to three drivers; Colin Symes, W.A. Runnalls and Doug Bennetts. Together these three formed Calder Highway Coaches, establishing a depot at 54 High Street/Chapel Street, Bendigo. Over the next 28 years, Calder Coaches built up a deeply established and reputable operation in the Bendigo region, comprising of extensive service offerings, and an equally impressive premier class, renowned fleet. Many families at this time obtained and framed these military service certificates. This was part of the empire spirit of 1914. Orbost Aero Club began in 1969 with Basil Dowie as Chair, David Nixon as Secretary/Treasurer. The group went into recess from 1977-1991 closing in 1997. The mid 1960s were boom years in flying training in Australia and the number of Aero Clubs grew rapidly. The Club played a significant role in the establishment of the small airport at Marlo and in the ongoing operation and development of the airport over the years particularly for patient transfer by aerial ambulance. Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat has a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. The letter was written by Allen Quinn to his mother. Allen started working as a seafarer when he was 16 years old, and frequently wrote to his mother during his travels. He also created an extensive photograph collection, which corresponds with the letters.The letter is part of an ongoing correspondence between Allan and his mother. In this letter, Allan talks about his 18th birthday, a trip to Stockholm and the ship he was on.Letter addressed to Mrs S. The following are the recollections of John Elkins, who started school in February, 1945 at Maryborough in Queensland, Australia. 'I think in Prep 1 that we had some paper to write on with pencils, but my memory of the routine use of slates is much more vivid. Each slate was framed in wood and one side was inscribed with lines to guide the limits for the upper and lower extremities of letters. The slate "pencils" were made of some pale gray mineral softer than slate which had been milled into cylinders some one-eighth of an inch in diameter and inserted into metal holders so that about an inch protruded. Each student was equipped with a small tobacco tin in which was kept a damp sponge or cloth to erase the marks. Sharpening slate pencils was a regular task. We rubbed them on any suitable brick or concrete surface in the school yard. Teachers also kept a good supply of spares, all writing materials and books being provided by the school. It is possible that the retention of slates stemmed from the political imperative that public education should be free. I do recall being given a Copy Book for home practice of letter formation, a typical practice until Grade 6. The tables at which we used to sit in the Infant School were replaced in the primary Grades by long desks seating five or six pupils. These had slots into which the slates could be inserted vertically. When the teacher asked the class to clear their desks, the command issued was "slates away!" This was an occasion for a noisy expression of relief as we dropped the slates producing a sound not unlike a volley of rifle shots, and usually brought a request from the teacher to repeat the process with no noise by holding the frames throughout. Thus, I suspect we may still have used slates in Grade Three, though by then paper, which may have been scarce during the War, seemed to be used more routinely.' Gillies Pies was started by three brothers from Charlton, in central Victoria, Les, Alan and Norm Gillies who left their farm after the 1940s drought and headed to Bendigo to start anew. From their first small bakery in Mitchell Street, the brothers eventually went on to employ about 200 people with wholesale and retail locations spreading across the state and distribution including Melbourne.A double-sided sign, both sides are identical. This fairly substantial wooden desk with vinyl top was issued to Wilson’s Promontory Lightstation by the Department of Public Works in the 1960’s. Primarily the desk was used for correspondence purposes, and now has the Bureau of Meteorology computer stationed on it. Although the design and make of this desk is common to many lightstations across Victoria, it is a good example of the kind of furniture that was provided to Victorian lightstations in the 1960’s. The solidly constructed desk was used in the lightstation office. It is made of honeycoloured hardwood and has a green vinyl top and three drawers on the left side. The style suggests that it may date to the 1960s. Gabo Island Lightstation has two identical desks, and all were probably standard issue from the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service or Public Works Office. Another twentieth century vinyl topped desk at Gabo is manufactured with a steel frame. Cape Nelson, Cape Schanck, Point Hicks and Gabo Island retain nineteenth century cedar desks. The desk at Wilsons Promontory has second level significance as a good example of the style of office furnishing provided to lightstations in the 1960s.Wooden desk with square legs and green vinyl top. This device was used for the treatment of procidentia (severe utero-vaginal prolapse). Cotton tape would be attached via the holes at the distal end of the instrument and tied around the waist to hold the pessary in position. The usually enlarged cervix would sit in the inserted cup. The vagina and the uterus were returned to the anatomically correct position. The instrument would be removed for cleaning approximately every three months.
