John TURNBULL was a prominent citizen of Sandridge/Port Melbourne. He started as a baker in Bay St then moved to the corner of Rouse and Nott Streets where he ran his baking business until leasing the premises to various licensees as The Auld Reekie Hotel. The Sands & McDougall Directory of 1880 shows Turnbull owned this store in Rouse Street, next door to the hotel. He served on Council for 15 years with one term as Mayor, 1877-78. John TURNBULL died on 13 March 1889. Leadcourt Homestead was built about 1868 by Mr. John Holt. Stone was transported from Mr Difficult. The Governor was entertained here in 1868 when he opened the Stawell Railway Station. John B. ROBINSON (c1877 -25 May1935) Born Ballarat, Victoria A latecomer to painting, John Robinson was known to periodically attend the Max Meldrum School. He joined the administrative staff of the Ballarat School of Mines somewhere around 1902, obtaining the position of Registrar. He stayed in the Schools employment for 35 years. His chief recreations were gardening and the study of art. "His many canvases reveal the sincerity of his work and represent a notable achievement from one who adopted art somewhat late in life. (Obituary, Ballarat School of Mines Students' Magazine, 1935) Robinson studied with Max Meldrum in Melbourne. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Initially donations were thanked by individuals or via typed notes. The next step was the use of pre-printed certificates of honour, which could then have the donor's name hand-written or typed in. These examples are interesting as they show the use of the initial draft of the guiding light symbol, of a black outline flame and semi-circle on a white background, and the continuance of the circle, but in white on a black background. Light blue flowery motifs vertically fill the top left hand side and horizontally the bottom right hand side of the page. Albion Hotel Stawell 1890's Albion Hotel built in 1868 by John Allingham, who held the license himself for that year. It was advertised that the hotel contained a billiard table. In 1869 Thomas Nightingale was the Licensee, he advertised Billiards, Skittles and a lunch daily between 11am and 1pm. There were various licensees until 1884 when John T. S. Julian bought the Hotel and was there until his death in 1899. Mrs. Julian owned the premises until her death in 1923. In 1924 the owner was Mr. W. Earle. In 1938 Mrs. Earle was the licensee until her husband died. William Hugh Earle was the licensee from 1938 to 1963. Mrs Jean Earle then leased out the Hotel till at least the 1990's. James Massey Herbert was born in 1891 and died in 1971. He was the son of Lancelot Herbert and Martha Rawling. He was married to Alma Young and his sons were Graham and Eric Herbert. ( info. from John Phillips) This certificate was a letter of introduction to be used when James Massey Herbert travelled overseas.The Herbert family is/was a prominent Orbost family. They were some of the early settlers in the district. The Orbost Coach Factory was in Wolseley Street OIrbsot, opposite the police station and was owned by Thomas John McCoy. Its business was coach-building, undertaking, blacksmithing and as a farrier. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of the early 20th century book-keeping of a business in Orbost. "Pte James W. FRAKEL"23020 was a member of the 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment during WW1. His brother John requested that he give some details of the time since his enlistment. The letter is quite a detailed account from his enlistment to his injury and demob.
