... Conductors ...Set of three brass cast, chrome plated, machined, device or ticket punches used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed a shaped hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring from coiled wire. Some of the chrome plating has been worn off. There are no manufacturer markings on the punches. Functional Object - Tramcar component, Duncan and Fraser, 1887?
Bell portion of a tramcar conductor's bell. Approximately. 100mm diameter, about 35mm deep with a raised or bossed hole at the top 4.5mm at the top. Bell possibly cast or pressed brass, appears to have been damaged or repaired due to excess brass in portion of the bell and on the underside where signs of brass welding are apparent. If from a horse tram, would have most likely been made by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide SA. Item 2526, page 9, Four Penny 4d ticket on a purple colour, light weight card stock used by ESCo c1920, Number Vb 6113, has been printed for specific use between Grenville St and the Sebastopol terminus. Printed by J.J. Miller Melb. Printing in black ink. Has been nipped or cancelled for the trip from Sebastopol. Photocopy of a Newspaper Clipping - from a Melbourne newspaper titled "Police Guard on Last Tram" about the last cable tram to North Carlton. Police were employed to stop the practice of souveniring which was common on such trips. Notes what was taken. Conductor Mr. Albert Rahilly, Gripman - Mr. Ernest Fitts. Newspaper Clipping - set of one clippings adhered to one side of a sheet of ruled quarto paper with punched holes on the left hand side - from The Herald newspaper reporting on an event that morning when tram 1025 was travelling along Plenty Road Preston without a driver. Has a photo of James Davison a motorist who spotted the situation and of James McCougan who along with the conductor stopped the tram just before Murray Road. Uniform - Badge, 1900's
Cap Badge for the Melbourne and Tramway Omnibus Co staff. Has abbreviation of "MTOCo". Made from a cast brass item, nickel plated, part of their uniform. Cast in the form of the handwritten or script word/s and underlined. On the rear, silver soldered on are two brass loops at either of the badge to enable badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap. No manufacturer's name on the rear of the badge. Sign, "Children's Carriages ....."
One of a group of signs that were fitted into tramcars in Ballarat, giving instructions to passengers about prams, behaviour, smoking, fare payment, talking to the motorman, instructions or information to drivers etc. Yields information about the sign manufacture, demonstrates the type of signs provided in tramcars.Enamel sign, black capital letters and lines on white background, titled "Children's Carriages which fold compactly may be permitted on cars at conductors discretion and owner's risk". One of a number similar signs donated to the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society by the SEC following closure of the Ballarat Tramways system in 1971. Ephemera - Ticket/s, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (SECV), Block of 25 No. 13 cent Parcel Tickets, 1969
Yields information about the style and printing of tickets used in Ballarat and Bendigo tramways and how they were presented.Block of 25 No. 13 cent Parcel Tickets. Two part printed ticket, using sepia ink on white paper with a gummed back, stapled with a single staple at the top onto a cardboard sheet. Ticket Nos. A007001 to A007025 The ticket butt or top portion has the form number "TYE 3-590". The second or middle portion was to be affixed to the parcel to be carried. It has the name of the organisation (SECV), "Parcel Ticket 13c", conditions of carriage and ticket number, prefixed with the letter A. The lower portion was retained by the sender, was to be initialled by the conductor, organisation name, "Parcel Ticket 13c", conditions of use, ticket number and a space where to be initialled by the conductor. The 1969 Schedule of Fares and Charges gives the conditions of the use of these tickets. See Reg. Item No. 704. 1727.1 - As above, Ticket Nos. A007405 to A 007405. On Kodak paper. 1420.1 - Bridge Road looking east at River St. crossover (Hawthorn bridge in distant background). Tram-bus connection at a weekend. Note driver's uniform. Conductor walking to bus with passengers. Conductors often worked through on the bus and next tram at this time to save crews. 1420.2 - Bridge Road at Punt Rd and Hoddle St. intersection looking north west. Reconstruction of curves. He is bringing, with him a choice of selection of the very latest and best of English and other part songs (both of the earlier composers and of the ultra-modern school) and patrons can look forward to a fine series of programmes.
