Document - Text, RVIB Hamilton Auxiliary, 1929-2000
The Hamilton RVIB Auxiliary formed on December 5th, 1929. This collection of papers includes the minute books from 1929 until 2000, including newspaper clippings from local and state papers, correpondence, financial reports, invitations and RVIB pamphlets and circulars. In October 1969, RVIB asked Auxiliaries to promote the television appearance of Robert Leeman, a blind harmonica player. In response to the Hamilton Auxiliary's congratulatory note, both Robert and his mother replied to the Auxiliary and as well as these letters, an article from the TV Times was also kept. Congratulations cards for Mabel White's 40 and 50 years of service can also be found in the minute books. The Anglesea RVIB Auxiliary formed on June 29, 1960. This collection of papers includes the minute books from 1960 until 2010, missing 1968-1972 and 2006-2010. The index cards were maintained by RVIB and contain the amount of donations made by the Auxiliary between 1976-1995, as well as the presentations delivered by RVIB employees to Auxiliary meetings between 1978-1985. A brief summary of the Anglesea auxiliary history had been hand written by Secretary Mrs Elsie Samuel in 1986. In 1982, the Braille and Talking Book Library first set up a subsidiary company called 'Louis Braille Productions', which allowed the production of audio books to be considered as a separate legal entity. This was later changed to 'Louis Braille Books' and, around 1999, 'Louis Braille Audio', which more of a focus on commercial audio production. Annual reports were both a way of informing benefactors as well as generating new ones for charitable organisations. In 1867 an asylum and school for blind children began in Melbourne. Between that first intake and 1891, the asylum went through a great many changes, including the building of the St Kilda Road building, growing in size and developing a workshop for blind workers. In 1983 the John Wilson Award was given to Herbert John Brumby. The citation reads: The Committee, Blind Members and Staff pay tribute to Herbert John Brumby and record his notable contribution over a period of forty years to the betterment and advancement of the blind people using the HMV Lightfoot Centre. As a volunteer, auxiliary member and committee member, as a sighted person and a blind member, he has given quite supportive friendship and consistent service of a high order to blind people and indefatiguable (sic) allegiance to the Association.
