Newspaper, The Age, "Next-gen tram rolls with the crunches", 24/10/23
Melbourne’s next-generation trams, G-class, have been designed to be easily repaired with improved visibility for drivers. A prototype has been completed and will be tested by a range of groups before testing on the network in 2025. Department of Transport and Planning’s head of rolling stock development, Ben Phyland, said this redesign was a response to the number of crashes in Melbourne and after consultation with tram drivers. In 2022, there were 960 collisions involving trams and cars, including 166 considered serious – an average of three crashes each day and a 60 per cent increase on 2021. Equipment - Flaman Speed Indicator and Recorder transport Box
Train Instrument transportation Box used for the transporting of Flaman Speed Indicator and Recorder to the repair workshops The Flaman Speed Indicator and Recorder was a device patented in 1901 by Nicolas Charles Eugène Flaman of France for indicating the current speed of a vehicle (for example a railway locomotive) and recording it on a paper tape that could be unrolled and examined at the end of a run to provide evidence of the speeds attained on the journey. Design features: The paper tape recording was driven directly by the wheels of the locomotive, with the paper spool moving at a fixed rate per kilometre travelled. Three graphs were recorded, the first being time elapsed (with the trace moving vertically if the train was stationary), the second being a speed curve. and the third recording the driver's attentiveness to signals ("Vigilance") by marking one tick above a line when the driver depressed a button, and another below the line when the engine went over the signal ramp. Data recorded: Read together, it was possible to determine exactly what speed the locomotive had been travelling at any point in time or distance. As well as allowing study of locomotive performance, it also allowed greater scrutiny of the observance of the driver of speed restrictions along the line and attentiveness to signals. It was practice on some railways such as the Victorian Railways in Australia for the driver to sign the speed chart prior to departure.Historic - Victorian Railways - Train Instrument transportation Box for the transporting of Flaman Speed Indicator and Recorder to the repair workshopsLarge wooden box with wrought iron fittings, painted black with white lettering on side panels. Photograph - Fred Rochow Railways Collection - Cleaning Crew for the 'Edward Henty" Locomotive S302, 1938
The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community. This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport.Left to right: W. Orchard, Hec Lloyd, Jack Hinchcliffe, Charlie Edmondson, George Lynch, Jack Bowden, Driver Tommy Black. "Edward Henty" Considered by many to be Victorian Railways' greatest passenger locomotives, the 4 S class steam locomotives were the first 3 cylinder steam locomotives. This small class was built to run the Melbourne to Albury passenger trains and spent their entire careers on the North East line. They were built unstreamlined and ran in this condition until 1937. The streamlining modifications complimented the all new "Spirit Of Progress" carriages. The S class ran the "Spirit" until 1952 at which time the newly delivered B class diesels took over. Locomotive S302 - the "Edward Henty" was withdrawn in July 1954, having covered 1,446,468 miles. Decorative object - Horse Piano Box Buggy Model, Chas W Davis, Unknown
The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Piano Box Buggy replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880 and early 1900's. A model of a red and black Piano Box Buggy c.1860 which was a lightweight two wheeled one passenger open horse drawn carriage with a black canopy roof where the driver sat behind. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with black rims, brown painted seating, two gold coach lamps and a black patterned footrest in front of the driver. The canopy has thin gold struts to open and close it depending on the weather. There are two long brown wooden shafts on each side to surround the horse. It has a model of a biscuit coloured horse with a white tail and mane with the necessary horse tack for carriage use to help the driver communicate with the horse. It was also known as the 'Bonner Buggy' and had many variations. Coach builders designed and made their own style, giving it their own name. There could have been scores of different Piano Box buggies.replicas, models, scale models, vehicles, carriages, horse drawn vehicles, toy horses -
