Jacqueline SLAYMAKER This work was undertaken in 1992 when Jacqueline Slaymaker was a 3rd Year student at Ballarat University College. The catalogue for the End of Year exhibition in 1992 states "The figures importance is purposeful. The strong sculptural form of the torso, tensions of the skin and volume are the aspects I focus on. Drawing is vital to my painting. The heavily layered works that I sand, scratch and rub back into eventually resolve some of the problems associated with painting. I believe this constant re-addressing creates a sense of history and building a texture creates a sense of history and build up of texture illustrates the concrete solid way I see the figure. I draw resource from ancient sculpture in particular Etruscan coffins and tomb wall painting. More recently I am interested in the draftsmanship of Jim Dine and monoprints of May Frank.' Peter PILVEN (1956- ) Born Ballarat Peter Pilven is acknowledged by his peers for his high level of tacit skills, including throwing, and for his sound technical knowledge of materials.Training with John Gilbert's Edinborough Pottery from 1972-1975, Pilven trained with Joan Campbell in Fremantle in 1976. In 1977 Peter Pilven obtained a Diploma of Fine Art (Ceramics) from Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now Federation University). The following year he worked with Ian Dowling at Geraldton, WA, and with the Western Australian Aboriginal Education Unit in 1979. He next trained with Alan Cagier-Smith in England between 1980 and 1981. Peter Pilven established his own studio in 1982. Phil BERRY (1963 - ) Born Ballarat Completing a Master of Arts at the University of Ballarat (now Federation) in 2012, he workes as a sessional staff member for the Arts Academy. Artist Phil Berry recalled ‘As a child I spent the majority of my holidays at my uncle and auntie’s. Uncle Jack was a prisoner of War at Changi during World War 2. Repatriated to Australia he was emaciated and clutched his prize possession, an old spoon. Part of his daily life during the extreme hardship of the camp, the spoon was a symbol of his survival, a constant in extreme uncertainty.’ ‘Home again Jack married, started a family and embraced peace. A kind and gentle man, I was fortunate to have known him. The coming of peace had given back what war had nearly taken away.’ This item won the Lucato Peace Prize and is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This artwork was found among items associated with the Ballarat School of Mines. Although its purpose remains unknown, it was possibly painted by a staff member or student for use on Wattle Day. Wattle Day originated in October 1889 by the Wattle Blossom League, and was associated with the Australian Natives Association during the lead up to the Federation of Australian States. The first 'national' Wattle Day was celebrated on 1 September 1910. Early Wattle Days involved planting wattle trees in school grounds, street decorations of wattle blossom, and wearing sprigs of wattle. As public support for Wattle Day peaked, World War I broke out. Wattle took on a new significance during the war years, symbolising home for military personnel serving overseas. Beautifully designed Wattle Day badges, as well as wattle sprigs, were sold as a means of raising money for organisations such as the Red Cross. James Mallett Bennett AFM and Bar MSM was born in St Kilda in 1894 and died in Weybridge, near London England, on 13 April 1922, in an aeroplane accident. Killed in the same accident was renowned aviator Sir Ross Macpherson Smith, KBE, MC & Bar, DFC & Two Bars. They were test-flying a Vikers Viking Amphibian aircraft which spun into the ground from 1000 feet (305 m), killing them both. Bennett was a long-serving crew member for Ross, as a mechanic, and had accompanied him on the first aeroplane flight from Egypt to India in December 1918, and from England to Australia in November-December 1919. He and Ross were mourned as national heroes and their bodies were brought back to Australia. Bennett was buried in St Kilda cemetery on 19 June 1922 after a lying-in-state at Queen's Hall, Parliament House. An obelisk in his honour was unveiled at St Kilda on 26 April 1927. Alan PEASCOD (1943-2007). Born England. Arrived Australia 1952. Alan Peascod was one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed ceramic artists. For over 35 years his work has been at the forefront of the Australian ceramics movement, developing radical techniques previously unexplored with his developments in unusual glazes and firing methods. His creative repertoire includes dry glazed vessels, alkaline glazes, majolica, saturated metals, and many post firing finishes. Alan's work with the very difficult reduced lustre technique is highly regarded. He was taught the method by Professor Said El Sadr in Cairo, Egypt in 1972 and this led to lifelong research of the technique throughout the Middle East and Europe. His work in the field led to the completion of his doctoral studies at the University of Wollongong in 1994. This study also led to satirical figurative sculpture themes dealing with the human condition. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Sybil CRAIG (18/11/1901-09/09/1989) Born London, England Arrived Melbourne 1902 Died Melbourne, Victoria Sybil Frances Craig was a student of John Shirlow in 1920 who introduced her to French avant-garde artists such as Matisse and Gauguin. In 1924 she studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School. She also underook private classes with George Bellfor several months where individual expression was encouraged, and she became associated with a group of Modernist artists including Sam Atyeo. In 1945 Sybil Craig became the third woman to be appointed as an official war artist. Based in Melbourne she worked for fourth months at the Commonwealth Ordinance Factory at Maribyrnong, becoming the first female artist to paint women working in the munitions factories. In her work Craig was attracted to many changing ideas and continued to explore line, rhythm, colour, simplicity and design. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. His paintings of the 1960s were characterised by a distorted use of line, shape and colour and were influenced by abstract expressionism, Francis Bacon and Sidney Nolan. Over time, his work has also drawn on punk, dada, Basquiat, T.S. Eliot, urban graffiti, classical Greek philosophy and art theory across a variety of media ranging from drawing, printmaking and collage to photomontage and photography. Sansom lectured in Art at the Ballarat Teachers' college, and was appointed Head of Painting at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1977-1985, and Dean School of Art at the Victorian College of the Arts from 1986-1991. He was artist-in-residence at the University of Melbourne in 1985, which was when he resumed his full-time painting practice with a series of large works on canvas. The Federation University Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.'Looking for God in Abstract Art 2' is a play on the debate over the respective virtues of abstraction and figuration that has preoccupied artists and critics for more than a century. Sanson has always walked a wobbly line between the two, adroitly avoiding falling headlong into either camp. It is also a gentle dig at the pretensions to higher spiritual meaning in abstract art. In the centre are two photographs, one of rubber masks and the other of the artist in a lurid fright wig and mask and using a spray can like a young tagger. These images, where the artist wears a mask and teeters on bright red platforms, are wonderfully ludicrous send-ups of the 'fine art' of painting. A newspaper article promoting the annual demonstration in The Sun on 7 September 1960. The photo shows a group of young girls in Legacy uniforms and a balloon. The names of the girls are Louise Ryan, Christine Hore, Susan Hore, Cheryl Hore, Robyn Yeo and Claire Ryan. The story says that boys and girls from Legacy were rehearsing for their annual demonstration at the Olympic swimming stadium. About 1000 children take part in the display. Highlights were physical trying exhibitions by the boys and ballet scenes by the girls. The theme of the show is the activities of Legacy throughout the year. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the 1980's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrap book of press clippings. Albert Jacka VC was born in Layard, near Winchelsea Victoria, on 10 January 1893. He was the first person in the AIF to be awarded the Victoria Cross, which he received for the first of many acts of heroism in WW I. After the war, on 17 January 1921, he married Frances Veronica Carey at St Mary's Catholic Church, St Kilda. They settled at St Kilda and later adopted a daughter. In September 1929. He was elected to the St Kilda Council and became mayor in 1930. He died on 17 January 1932 of chronic nephritis. Nearly 6000 people filed past his coffin when it lay in state in Anzac House. The funeral procession to St Kilda cemetery was led by over 1000 returned soldiers and was flanked by thousands of onlookers. He was buried with full military honours in the Presbyterian section. Eight Victoria Cross winners were his pallbearers. A memorial plaque and sculpture for his grave was paid for by public subscription and £1195 was raised towards buying his widow a house. The former Deep Rock Swimming Pool was about 500 yards [457 metres] above Dight’s Falls. It was there that the Deep Rock Swimming Club was established in 1906. This initial club was expanded in 1916 to incorporate a life-saving club. In 1918, John Wren, the president of the club offered the club £1000, and undertook to sponsor a patriotic carnival in March 1918, at which swimming champions would take part. The ‘pool’ was to achieve fame as the venue for a world record-breaking ‘swallow dive’ of 205 feet 9 inches [63 metres] by ‘Prince Wickyama’, [aka Alec Wickham], a Solomon Islander. The dive from a special platform on the west side of the Yarra was reputedly viewed by between 50,000-100,000 spectators, with funds going to the State War Council. The Herald, 25 March 1918, claimed that the wide area occupied by spectators made more precise estimates impossible. In the 1980s, the construction of the Eastern Freeway, and the consequent re-routing of the Yarra River led to the site of the Deep Rock Pool being obliterated.
