EDHS Newsletter No. 265 August 2022 We are fortunate to have in our collection a wide range of early images of the Eltham district. Some of these are part of the Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection (SEPP) held in partnership between the Eltham District Historical Society and the Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library). Some are part of the group of photographs collected when the Pioneers and Painters book was published to commemorate the 1971 centenary of the Shire of Eltham. A prominent photographer of some of these early images is John Henry (Harry) Clark, whose background story is detailed in the article on page 7 of this newsletter. We are indebted to him for recording places and people that now are treasured reflections of days gone by. In 2018, Greensborough Historical Society placed plaques in the Main Street area of Greensborough. In these photographs, Jillian Riley is shown the plaque of the Ashril Theatre, which belonged to her father Stan Riley. The Torch is a newsletter published twice a year and contains a report from the President with highlights of the year and stories of people Legacy has helped. It grew out of the highlights report that was published alongside the Annual Report. The annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and highlights of the year in photos. In 1987 these were published in a separate document called Highlights from the Annual Report. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012.
