Falls Creek Historical Society
Letter - Notice Of Meeting - 29th February 1960
Bob Hymans Collection Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This letter is significant because it documents the management of the Falls Creek Tourist Area in the early 1960s..This letter was written by the Falls Creek Area Management Committee to convene a meeting of Licensees in order to nominate two new members to the Committee.falls creek area management committee, falls creek administration -

Photograph - Bowling at Auburn Heights' Recreation Club Opening, 1906
Sir John Madden, Chief Justice of Victoria, opened the Auburn Heights Recreation Club in Barkers Road in December 1904. Two years later the greens were improved and a new croquet lawn established. In September 1906, a ceremony was held to open these and also the new pavilion designed by Harry Tompkins. Ninety-two years later, following the amalgamation of Auburn Heights and the Kew Bowling Club in 1998, it was renamed the Kew Heights Sports Club. In 2012, the amalgamated Club was renamed the MCC Sports Club.An early, rare photograph of a significant sporting institution in Kew.1/4 plate glass negative (and accompanying photographic print) of bowling at Auburn Heights Recreation Club opening in 1906. Map - Map - Photocopy, New Guinea Escape Route
At the end of January 1942 there was only about 250 men left in Wau, as the women and children had been evacuated by air a little earlier. With no planes to take the men they had to make their own way to Port Moresby and then travel by ship to Australia. Some men went down to Salamaua and made their way along the north coast, but small groups also made their way over the Owen Stanley Ranges; rafting down the Lakekamu RIver to Yule Island and by boat to Port Moresby. Donor Vanessa Kiessling's Father was part of the second group, and had drawn a detailed map of their route. This might be the same route taken by Rev. Willi Hertle (Ref C0750)Photocopy of New Guinea map showing escape routePlan of surveyed route from Edie Creek to Bulldog Dromepapua new guinea, escape, map, wau, willi hertle, kiessling -
