In 1992 Shire of Eltham Historical Society member and Kangaroo Ground resident, Bruce Ness became aware that the old school teacher residence at Kangaroo Ground School was no longer being used. Over the years Bruce had been storing a growing collection of the Society's artifacts and objects including various machinery and farm tools. He proposed that this might present an opportunity to set up a museum with the Society's objects. It was proposed that a board be appointed containing representatives of the Society, the School Council, Shire of Eltham and "Friends of the Andrew Ross Museum." HMS Susan sailed from the Port of London on the 23rd September 1835. She carried 394 male convicts and a guard of officers and 30 rank and file of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) regiment, arriving in Sydney on 8th February 1836. Samuel Windridge, who was born in Warwickshire in 1817, was a Private in the Regiment on board the ‘Susan’. He served in various places: Sydney, Moreton Bay (Brisbane) and Port Phillip (Melbourne). He was discharged from the Regiment in 1842 with the rank of Sergeant. After his marriage he settled in Victoria and by 1852 he was often in charge of the gold escort from Bendigo. In 1854 he retired from the Gold Commission and settled in Kyneton. In 1860 the Kyneton Mounted Rifle Corps was formed with Samuel Windridge as one of its earliest members. In 1862 the ladies of Kyneton presented a standard to the Rifle Corps. In 1976 the Shire of Kyneton presented the Kyneton Colours to the 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse Regiment Museum. In 1862 the whole of the Victorian Horse was amalgamated into one Regiment: The Prince of Wales Light Horse. Samuel Windridge rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Kyneton Troop of the regiment. Arthur Street, Eltham next to ANZ Bank The Hiroshima Day Banner was made by Jacky Talbot as part of the project. The women wanted to do something for Hiroshima Day and suggested that a workshop be set aside to make a banner. The artist was concerned about the remaining time scheduled for the project and spent several days "whipping" up the banner herself. For the artist this banner was to prove quite significant. The women hung it at the Community Notice Board on Hiroshima Day and were photographed by the local newspaper publicising the group and drawing wider community attention to the remembrance of the day. Although no new members joined the group from this activity, the artist felt that she was more fully accepted by the group afterwards. This banner has initiated a small group of women committed to peace. The artist has also continued to liaise and meet with the women as time permits. Future group plans include: making kimonos to wear when carrying the banner, participating in the Palm Sunday March, an observance of Hiroshima Day activity, which is yet to be decided, establishing contact with a sister-town in USA and USSR and supporting Eltham Council's stance as a Nuclear Free Zone. Photos include: Log building which the students constructed and used as a co-operative shop, Primary Class, Science class outside their classroom, Government meeting held in the outdoor theatre, Janet and Lawrence Nield. "Koornung School, Warrandyte was established by Clive and Janet Blake Nield in 1939, after they had visited progressive schools in Europe and America. They believed children should be given freedom to grow while learning to accept responsibility; that school should be a miniature democracy and education not a preparation for life but experience of life itself. A government of children and all staff (whatever their jobs in the school) met regularly, made the rules and dealt out punishment for breaking them. The few rules set down by staff related to health and safety, for instance, no pupils were allowed to go into the river without supervision. The school could not have been started at a worse time. Food rationing and coupons, petrol shortages and men at war limiting teaching staff made difficulties. It was an expensive school to run. Financial difficulties became more serious and eventually the school had to close in 1946. Efforts by the children and a Board of Management of notable people failed to save it. Janet Nield (M.A., Dip Ed.) was an inspired teacher of history. She was one of the few women at Melbourne University at that time to gain a Masters degree in history. The Nields left Melbourne to live in Sydney, Clive to work at Sydney University in lecturing in Education and particularly interested in Colombo Plan students. Janet devoted herself to children as a Lay Analyst. This book was written by Edward Vidler (1863-1942), a printer, publisher and author. Born in England, Vidler was in Geelong in the 1880s and produced there a commemorative volume on that city. He came to Warrnambool in the early years of the 20th century and was Secretary of the Warrnambool and District Progress League and the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce and Industry. While in Warrnambool he produced an important 1907 publication, ‘Warrnambool Past and Present – Sixty Years of Progress’ and also organized the production of the Pioneer Honour Board featuring portraits of 204 Warrnambool and district pioneer men. After he left Warrnambool he lived in Melbourne where he edited magazines and published his own and other writings. He was a foundation member of the group that established the Maranoa Native Gardens in Balwyn and promoted Australian flora and fauna. This book is of great interest s it was written by Edward Vidler, a resident of Warrnambool in the early 1900s and an important and influential figure in our history. He left behind in Warrnambool two most important legacies – the Pioneer Honour Board and the book ‘Warrnambool Past and Present’, a history of Warrnambool that has proved invaluable to researchers today. No information has been found on the original owner of the book, William Ewers. This is a 1931 soft cover book of 96 pages. The cover has a grey-coloured background and a sepia-coloured photograph of two kookaburras on a tree branch on the front cover and an advertisement for a publication called ‘Songs of the Bush’ on the back cover. The book is dedicated to the Gould League of Bird Lovers. It has a Contents page, a Foreword, a Preface, pages on Australian birds and an Index. It has many black and white photographs of Australian birds. It is glued and bound with blue tape.Signature on front cover and inside first page: ‘Wm. D. This plaque is the name plate of one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors. Alfred Ernest Brauer came to Warrnambool after graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1927. He initially took up the position as resident medical officer at the Warrnambool Base Hospital before entering private practice. he was appointed honorary medical officer at the hospital and was a life member of the Hospital board , serving as its president from 1952-54.he was a founding member of the South Western Victoria Ambulance service.as vice president, a position he held until his death in 1972.He had wide sporting and community interests including cricket, football, and horseracing. He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Lutheran church and was closely associated with Warrnambool High School and Warrnambool Technical School. he died in September 1972 and was survived by his wife and three daughters. His practice was situated in Koroit StWarrnambool, firstly at Ambleside where he also lived, then later on the other side of the street , in practice with a number of other doctors. A link to one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors who contributed to the city in a wide range of roles. In 1907 he initiated and organized the establishment of the Warrnambool Pioneer Honour Board featuring portraits of 204 pioneer men. This board still exists. 2. In 1907 he produced a publication called ‘Warrnambool Past and Present – Sixty Years of Progress’. It celebrated the 60th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool and contained 88 pages, 120 illustrations and photographs and many advertisements. The publication is noted for its historical accuracy, the way it complements and adds to Richard Osburne’s 1887 history of Warrnambool and its presentation of historical material that may otherwise have been lost. Both of Vidler’s initiatives described above are of the utmost importance in Warrnambool’s history. This is a soft cover book of 270 pages. The cover is green with black printed material on the covers and the spine. The book has a Preface, 24 chapters of text and a Bibliography. There are advertisements for other books on the last page and the back cover. The cover is stained and faded and partly torn in places and some of the inside pages are stained. This is one of the very few surviving pieces of correspondence between Bob and his wife, Madge. Bob destroyed the bulk of such correspondence between the pair, although some of Bob's typed letter/stories that Bob sent to Madge survived, pasted into a large hard-backed journal, and later passed on to grand-daughter, Margaret Davey. The Registry Office marriage was a secret business. Perhaps an Irish nationalist, Madge's father, Andrew McLaughlin, had absolutely forbidden any of his daughters to marry a soldier. The Snapes were taken by surprise too and Madge wore the wedding ring on a string about her neck. Coach with flaps takes aboard passengers. It travelled between Kinglake and Hurstbridge. The vehicle has advertising on the side indicating: W. BODY. HURSTBRIDGE bread and pastry. The Advertiser on 15 Sep 1922 has a display advertisement on page 2 indicating that Hurstbridge bakery 'W. Body wishes to notify the Public of Hurstbridge and surrounding district that he has purchased Mr Oliver's business'. The Advertiser, Friday 10 November 1922, page 2: Mr J. D. Chalmers, who runs the motor service from Hurstbridge to Kinglake, has just had a large, body built on a two-ton motor, which will be serviceable for either 25 passengers or general goods. The work was entrusted to Mr. D.G. Graham, motor and coach builder, Hurstbridge, who completed it within a month, the finish, painting, etc.. being quite up to the standard of a city shop. The mail coach operated the route between Kinglake and Hurstbridge motor route, on which Mr. Sharpe had pioneered and run a motor mail route with a bus which carried 20 passengers, for many years but Sharpe's license for his motor bus was refused by the Country Roads Board mid 1930 as his bus was considered too large . In February 1935, Mr Sharpe was granted a license to carry passengers between Hurstbridge and Kinglake and Mr Kell between Kinglake and Hurstbridge. In 1936 the mail contract from Heidelberg to Knglake was via car and members of the community were concerned that there was no further any conveyance of passengers from Hurstbridge to Kinglake.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Collage of a collection of black and white portraits of men in oval frames with names. They are past councillors and the late Officer C.S. Wingrove of the Shire of Eltham from its inception until 1914. Originally compiled as a farewell gift to Ewan H. Cameron on his retirement from Parliament and community affairs in 1914. The photos were encased in a very large and handsme frame. It was presented to Mr. Cameron as a "testimonial [and] a small token of [Eltham Shire Councillors and community] their heartfelt esteem, and felt Mr Cameron would often look upon the faces encased in the frame, and it would remind him of friendships made and good work performed.' Mr Cameron was a well-respected man described as “Father of all in the County of Evelyn”. There were many living monuments of the good work done by Mr Cameron – schools, churches, halls and railways. Mr Cameron’s retirement was partly due to deafness. On the occasion of the presentation he told his audience that he started his public career in 1858 when he was elected a member of the Castlemaine Mining Board-; he held the position till 1900-42 years. In 1862 he was elected to the Eltham Shire Council (then a Road Board), and retired in 1914-52 years. He entered Parliament in 1874 and retired in 1914 -40 years and 8 months. The Hon Ewan H. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. The Country Roads Board was the government authority for the construction and maintenance of main roads in Victoria between 1913 and 1983. It was succeeded by the Road Construction authority on 1 July 1983 and later merged with the Road Traffic Authority on July 1 1989 to form the Roads Corporation. James Cameron, an Orbost farming pioneer and Member of the Legislative Assembly, fathered the Country Roads Board. This ledger is a hand-written record of accounts for the Orbost Shire local council. The Orbost Waterworks Trust was constituted under the Water Act 1915 and the Water Act 1916 and gazetted 10th Jan 1917. The Trust consisted of six members who were responsible for the provision of reticulated water to meet the needs of the town. The first reticulated supply to Orbost was installed about 1920. The Trust became part of the Orbost Water Board constituted under the Water and Sewerage Authorities (Restructuring Act) 1983. From 1995 the area has been served by the East Gippsland Region Water Authority. The East Gippsland Region Water Authority was constituted on January 1, 1995. The new Authority assumed responsibility for the services previously provided by the Mitchell Water Board, the Tambo Water Board, the Orbost Water Board and the Mallacoota Water Board. East Gippsland Water is the registered business name of the East Gippsland Region Water Authority. The Trust consisted of six members who were responsible for the provision of reticulated water to meet the needs of the town. The first reticulated supply to Orbost was installed about 1920. The Trust became part of the Orbost Water Board constituted under the Water and Sewerage Authorities (Restructuring Act) 1983. From 1995 the area has been served by the East Gippsland Region Water Authority. The East Gippsland Region Water Authority was constituted on January 1, 1995. The new Authority assumed responsibility for the services previously provided by the Mitchell Water Board, the Tambo Water Board, the Orbost Water Board and the Mallacoota Water Board. Local land boards were community based "tribunals" consisting of a chairman appointed by the the state government and two(?) local members who were there or their knowledge of local land management practices. Councilor James Baird was elected as a member of the first Ballarat Shire Council in 1863 becoming the first Shire President for 1863-64,and was on council until 1865.He was then re-elected to council in1868 until 1887.He then served three more terms as President 1874-75 ,1875-76, and 1879-80.This original photo is of the first President of the newly formed Ballarat Shire. On 16th November (monday)1863, it was declared that the Ballarat Road Board District to be a Shire known as the Shire of Ballarat.This document was signed and sealed by Colonial Governor Charles H.Darling. The declaration was published in The Government Gazette on tuesday 24th November 1863. Recovered from the wreck of the Loch Ard. Artefact Reg No LA/05. HISTORY OF THE LOCH ARD The LOCH ARD belonged to the famous Loch Line which sailed many ships from England to Australia. Built in Glasgow by Barclay, Curdle and Co. in 1873, the LOCH ARD was a three-masted square rigged iron sailing ship. The ship measured 262ft 7" (79.87m) in length, 38ft (11.58m) in width, 23ft (7m) in depth and had a gross tonnage of 1693 tons. The LOCH ARD's main mast measured a massive 150ft (45.7m) in height. LOCH ARD made three trips to Australia and one trip to Calcutta before its final voyage. LOCH ARD left England on March 2, 1878, under the command of Captain Gibbs, a newly married, 29 year old. She was bound for Melbourne with a crew of 37, plus 17 passengers and a load of cargo. The general cargo reflected the affluence of Melbourne at the time. On board were straw hats, umbrella, perfumes, clay pipes, pianos, clocks, confectionary, linen and candles, as well as a heavier load of railway irons, cement, lead and copper. There were items included that intended for display in the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. The voyage to Port Phillip was long but uneventful. At 3am on June 1, 1878, Captain Gibbs was expecting to see land and the passengers were becoming excited as they prepared to view their new homeland in the early morning. But LOCH ARD was running into a fog which greatly reduced visibility. Captain Gibbs was becoming anxious as there was no sign of land or the Cape Otway lighthouse. At 4am the fog lifted. A man aloft announced that he could see breakers. The sheer cliffs of Victoria's west coast came into view, and Captain Gibbs realised that the ship was much closer to them than expected. He ordered as much sail to be set as time would permit and then attempted to steer the vessel out to sea. On coming head on into the wind, the ship lost momentum, the sails fell limp and LOCH ARD's bow swung back. Gibbs then ordered the anchors to be released in an attempt to hold its position. The anchors sank some 50 fathoms - but did not hold. By this time LOCH ARD was among the breakers and the tall cliffs of Mutton Bird Island rose behind the ship. Just half a mile from the coast, the ship's bow was suddenly pulled around by the anchor. The captain tried to tack out to sea, but the ship struck a reef at the base of Mutton Bird Island, near Port Campbell. Waves broke over the ship and the top deck was loosened from the hull. The masts and rigging came crashing down knocking passengers and crew overboard. When a lifeboat was finally launched, it crashed into the side of LOCH ARD and capsized. Tom Pearce, who had launched the boat, managed to cling to its overturned hull and shelter beneath it. He drifted out to sea and then on the flood tide came into what is now known as LOCH ARD Gorge. He swam to shore, bruised and dazed, and found a cave in which to shelter. Some of the crew stayed below deck to shelter from the falling rigging but drowned when the ship slipped off the reef into deeper water. Eva Carmichael had raced onto deck to find out what was happening only to be confronted by towering cliffs looming above the stricken ship. In all the chaos, Captain Gibbs grabbed Eva and said, "If you are saved Eva, let my dear wife know that I died like a sailor". That was the last Eva Carmichael saw of the captain. She was swept off the ship by a huge wave. Eva saw Tom Pearce on a small rocky beach and yelled to attract his attention. He dived in and swam to the exhausted woman and dragged her to shore. He took her to the cave and broke open case of brandy which had washed up on the beach. He opened a bottle to revive the unconscious woman. A few hours later Tom scaled a cliff in search of help. He followed hoof prints and came by chance upon two men from nearby Glenample Station three and a half miles away. In a state of exhaustion, he told the men of the tragedy. Tom returned to the gorge while the two men rode back to the station to get help. By the time they reached LOCH ARD Gorge, it was cold and dark. The two shipwreck survivors were taken to Glenample Station to recover. Eva stayed at the station for six weeks before returning to Ireland, this time by steamship. In Melbourne, Tom Pearce received a hero's welcome. He was presented with the first gold medal of the Royal Humane Society of Victoria and a £1000 cheque from the Victorian Government. Concerts were performed to honour the young man's bravery and to raise money for those who lost family in the LOCH ARD disaster. Of the 54 crew members and passengers on board, only two survived: the apprentice, Tom Pearce and the young woman passenger, Eva Carmichael, who lost all of her family in the tragedy. Ten days after the LOCH ARD tragedy, salvage rights to the wreck were sold at auction for £2,120. Cargo valued at £3,000 was salvaged and placed on the beach, but most washed back into the sea when another storm developed. The wreck of LOCH ARD still lies at the base of Mutton Bird Island. Much of the cargo has now been salvaged and some was washed up into what is now known as LOCH ARD Gorge. Cargo and artefacts have also been illegally salvaged over many years before protective legislation was introduced. One of the most unlikely pieces of cargo to have survived the shipwreck was a Minton porcelain peacock - one of only nine in the world. The peacock was destined for the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. It had been well packed, which gave it adequate protection during the violent storm. Today, the Minton peacock can be seen at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum in Warrnambool. From Australia's most dramatic shipwreck it has now become Australia's most valuable shipwreck artefact and is one of very few 'objects' on the Victorian State Heritage Register. Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from LOCH ARD is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR S417). The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the LOCH ARD. The LOCH ARD collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The LOCH ARD collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the LOCH ARD, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history.
