In an era predating the computerisation of equipment on public transport, where trams in Melbourne were driven by drivers and conductors sold fares, destinations were shown at the front and rear of the tram within a glazed box. A driver adjusted the roll to select each new trip destination. Given the length of rolls, in this case approximately nine metres, this could be a time consuming process. In addition to the named destination roll, each tram included a separate roll listing the route numbers.The roll was purchased at a Leski Auction in Armadale as part of a large group of tramways memorabilia including tram 'rolls' from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. The auction house described the collection as "The collection of destination blinds or rolls that forms the core of the Railways Trams & Buses Section (Lots 655 – 732) is the best we have ever offered and represents a life-time of collecting by an Adelaide enthusiast, now deceased." The photo shows three trams at Hospital Corner, during the mid to late1950s. Tram 35 turns from Drummond Street South on its way to Lydiard St North. Another bogie tram is turning into Drummond St South while No. 25 waits at the tram stop. A conductor can be seen walking forward with a point bar. In the background is the sign for Rimmiington Bros Butchers and the Southern Cross Hotel. The driver is preparing to lift the trolley pole, while the conductor is standing alongside the tram. The tram has the destination of City and has been fitted with tail lights and large reflective triangles - from 1956 to 1960. These signs became necessary after the introduction of CITY SECTION fares in July 1951 to indicate to conductors and passengers the boundary of the city section, where a special fare applied. Used by SEC until 9/1971. Acquired by BTPS Museum in Oct. 1971 from SECV. Used at Dawson & Sturt St. Was physically removed from pole by levering it off, damaging lower part of sign. See item 704 for a plan showing the Ballarat tram sections.Demonstrates a SECV End of Section sign for a particular location.Sheet steel folded for a pole-mounted sign and then enamelled with words (white background, black letters) "END OF SECTION" on both sides. Drilled with two holes for mounting bolts on the small leg. Similar style to that used by the M&MTB. Has had the words "City" and "C1" painted on the sign in black paint, which is in poor condition. In mid 1941, the MMTB commenced to employ females as Conductresses to alleviate a man power shortage as result of the Second World War. The first 8 commenced training at Hawthorn Depot during August and commenced work on 4 September. See reference for more details on the use of female staff. This volume has many personal notes on his work, his colleagues and events that affected the tramways. Includes many photocopies of newspaper articles.
