Max Robinson (1934-2018) designed this record sleeve for the World Record Club in 1961. Robinson studied for a year at the Melbourne Technical College (RMIT University), and in his early career worked for Peter Clemenger and the graphic designer, Max Forbes. He produced a number of striking record covers for the World Record Club in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Robinson’s work is familiar to many Australians – he designed the new $10 note in 1993, which featured Banjo Paterson and Dame Mary Gilmore. The World Record Club’s operated in Melbourne from 1957 until 1976; it was a mail order service, and its art director, Geoff Digby commissioned young designers and artist to design the record sleeves. It is regarded now as one of most representative collection of Australian designers’ work of its period, and highlights the years of transition from ‘commercial art’ to ‘graphic design’. The album cover was donated to the Archive by the World Record Club’s art director, Geoff Digby. This pulley was found by Geoff Stevenson, on a beach near Cape Conran (east of Orbost). It probably came from a sailing ship which was wrecked there. Pulleys are simple devices for increasing mechanical advantage in a wire, chain or rope system. A pulley consists of a wheel with a specialized rim that rotates on an axle and carries some type of cable or chain. Ships used a variety of blocks (pulleys) for various tasks, such as stowing cargo or handling the sails. A large wooden pulley encased in iron. The Lutheran School in Mackenzie Street was evidently also referred to as the 'German Penny School' because those who attended has to pay a penny per day. The original from which these negatives were produced belongs to Geoff Pedersen of Kamarooka, and was evidently taken in the late 1860's. Note the manse on the side and a portion of the church tower (built 1865) in the background. During the golden jubilee of Legacy the delegates at the Annual Conference decided to send a message of loyalty to Queen Elizabeth II. This was signed by Geoff Handbury who was president of Melbourne Legacy and also conference chairman. H38 is a numbering system that was once used to sort items for the archive.
