Robert Hobson purchased 148 acres of land in Crown Portion 17 from the Crown Grantee John Brown in 1877, which was sold to George Knowles Parker and John Howard Aylwin in 1887. A major purchaser of this land east of the Greensborough Road was Mary Baird in 1929. Although Baird died in 1944, sales from her estate continued until 1956. Purcell Stubley bought the garage site in 1946, and this photograph would have been taken shortly afterwards. Note the multiple fuel bowsers, each selling a different brand. The site of the Greensborough swimming pool taken from the corner of Grimshaw Street and Para Road. The barometer board shows the amount needed by public subscription. The two storey hall in the centre back had been the Rechabite Hall, later Masonic Hall then Ashril Theatre. The picture also shows the undeveloped nature of the area behind the Main St shops.
