A Legacy widow, Beryl Billing, with two school girls from Siena College and a lot of loose letters. Six school girls came to Legacy house to meet the weekly gathering of the stamp ladies. They had chosen Legacy as a cause they wanted to help and decided to collect stamps, they donated over 5,000 stamps. The widows clubs have sorted used stamps and sold to a stamp dealer for many years to the present day. It raises funds and provides a purpose for gathering together. Beryl Billings was the co-ordinator of the stamp sorting for many years. This photo was featured on the back cover of The Answer newsletter in September 1992.A record of the type of activities Legacy provided as a social outlet for widows and for fundraising. In 1906 the Ballarat Progress Association commissioned Powell and Co. to publish a booklet called Guide to Ballarat the Beautiful.This booklet contained many photographs (including coloured photography) and description of businesses and icons of which inhabitants of the city could be proud. This Elector's Right Certificate, No. 206179, is for Samuel Richardson, a sawyer, who lived at Bullarook in the Ballarat East Division. It has been signed by W. Cantwell, the registrar and by Samuel Richardson. As a resident and a male he was entitled to vote in the Ballarat East Division at Victorian State elections. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. In 1860, Charles Herold of Ballarat, a gold miner applied to be naturalized. He was born in Kitzinger Bavaria and at the age of thirty-five arrived by the ship "Mary Ross" in Tasmania in 1854 from Hamburg. He then came to the Colony of Victoria by the SS "Queen" in 1857. He wished to purchase land and settle in the Colony for life. This was granted but he first needed to swear an Oath before one of the Judges of the Supreme Court. The Certificate was signed by Henry Barkly. Charles Herold took the Oath before Robert Molesworth, Judge of the Supreme Court on 18 July 1860.Thick cream paper, hand written in ink. This is one in a series of letters written by various seafarers to Lillie Duncan. Lillie was a member of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild during the 1920s. She seems to have struck up a number of friendships with seafarers who used the facility. The Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild was responsible for much of the fundraising that constructed and maintained the organisation from its inception in 1902. They were also responsible for arranging dances and other social activities designed to make seafarers welcome in a strange environment.The purpose of the Mission to Seafarers is, as it always was, to provide comfort and welfare services to visiting seafarers.
