Deborah Gold Mines included the South Deborah, North Deborah and Deborah Extended. Deborah Gold Mines N.L. was wound up in 1950, when the shareholders, at an extraordinary meeting confirmed a proposal for voluntary liquidation. (Advertiser., Adelaide, 24 May, 1950) . George Kingsley, who wrote the reports, was the Mine Manager. He was born in Guildford in 1872, died in Bendigo in 1943. He spent his working life working in gold mines, mainly in Bendigo, in various roles, starting his work life as a blacksmith. Gold bearing ore is pulverized by cast iron stampers (steam driven) and material then passes over a large copper plate covered in mercury causing the gold particles to combine with the mercury to form an amalgam which is scraped of and placed in a retort. The retort is heated causing the mercury to evaporate leaving the gold to be refined into ingots. The mercury is cooled as it leaves the retort and is reused. A second tray covered in what is called a blanket traps any fine gold that has passed the first plate. Finally the residue material goes over a vibrating table called a Wilfley Table which captures any iron pyrites which may contain about three percent gold. this is roasted and treated to recover any remaining gold at a special treatment plant.Wooden model of a five heads gold stamper battery. This photograph is a copy of the Valentine series postcard originally produced c.1920. The photograph copy was recorded made c. 1930's - 40's, depicting Lake Kerferd, Beechworth. Lake Kerferd was built in 1862 to assist for gold mining activities as it held the waters of the Hurdle Swamp. The retaining wall built to create Lake Kerferd is depicted in the photograph adjacent to a narrow road, the make of the single automobile shown is consistent with the date recorded. The photograph is socially significant due to the connection of Beechworth in the past, present and future. Originally developed for gold mining activities which is a strong research area as the foundation of many towns in Australia's history. Crib Pail owned by John Tom Clifton. His mother Frances Clifton re-married after his death to Thomas Harvey and it was held by the Harvey family It was loaned by Leonard Harvey to the organisers of the Great Australasia Mining Disaster Centenary Committee 1982 but then presented by his family to the museum in his memory.It is the only known article from the New Australasian No.2 Gold Mining Disaster. It was reported that three were removed from the mine at the time of the disaster. The Bellingham Billy rusted when left in a shed. The first company to make a success of hard-rock (quartz) gold mining at Black Hill was the Black Hill Company, formed in 1859. Mining from the open-cut mine probably commenced in 1860 and by 1861 the company had erected the largest stamping mill in Victoria. The mill ran 24 hours a day until the end of 1864 and 12 hours a day in 1865. Open cut mining then ceased. Copy of 3-page handwritten document by Albert Richardson. Written on top of page one: 'Mining Report Historical Society 6.7.67. Historical Records of Bendigo Mines' which outlines a project undertaken by Albert and the Historical Society to write a description of each Bendigo mine, showing location, plant, gold gained, depth of shaft etc. The objective was to publish this information in a book for 'educational and historical purpose'. The paper further describes a public meeting to outline the BHS proposal to 'preserve a gold mine with all equipment both surface and underground, a crushing battery, a windlass, a whip and a whim to be stored, as far as possible in correct position. For tourists, local residents and educational purposes this should illustrate what Bendigo workers in Bendigo foundries and Bendigo citizens generally, achieved in making this city a world-famous gold mining centre. One of the best finds at Club Terrace was the 'Ace of Clubs' mine which was later sold to the Mallina Gold Mining Company. Syd Cadwallader was appointed manager of the company. The gold was smelted and brought to Orbost on horseback. The only protection against thieves was a revolver and riding crop, which the manager always carried. The 'Ace of Clubs' was eventually closed as the company was unable to cope with the rising water problem.
