Photograph - Retouching Reproduction Material at the Army Survey Regiment, c1960s, c1970s
The first four photographs were most likely taken in the 1960 and the fifth in the 1970s at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. As there are no annotations with the photos, the exact dates, locations and names of personnel are unknown. SGT Bob Scaddan appears in the fifth photo taken in the 1970s Photos .1P and .2P. could have been taken in Lithographic Squadron’s retouching room and Photos .3P, .4P and .5P. were probably taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. Retouching mainly entailed the application of liquid opaque (Plumtree), commonly known as “duff” to cover blemishes such as scratches and spots on film negatives before photographic exposure. Retouching technicians also used specialised techniques such as “needling” to repair faults on the emulsion of map reproduction material. The technician in photo .4P is needling a hydrographic feature on a drainage negative, with a zoom transfer scope projecting a scaled projected aerial photograph as a positional reference. This is a set of five photographs of technicians retouching reproduction material at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. The photographs were scanned at 300 dpi. .1) - Photo, black & white, c1960s. unidentified personnel in Lithographic Squadron. .2) - Photo, black & white, c1960s. unidentified personnel in Lithographic Squadron. .3) - Photo, black & white, c1960s. unidentified personnel in Cartographic Squadron Attic. .4) - Photo, black & white, c1960s. unidentified personnel in Cartographic Squadron Attic. .5) - Photo, black & white, c1970s. Document, Pamphlets lake Pertobe, 2014
Lake Pertobe in Warrnambool is a former swamp area which was transformed into a recreational area and children’s playground in the 1970s. The reserve is a popular spot for bird watching with over 80 species found in the vicinity. The brochure on Lake Pertobe’s birds had been produced by BirdLife Warrnambool, part of BirdLife Australia, an independent, not-for profit organisation aiming to protect our birdlife and disseminate information on Australian birds. This is an important little brochure as it contains information for locals and tourists about the birdlife in Lake Pertobe, one of the best-known and best-loved spots in WarrnamboolThis is an A3 sheet of paper printed on both sides and folded three times to form a brochure. It contains colour photographs of birds, two maps and information about BirdLife Warrnambool and BirdLife Australia and the logo of Birdlife Warrnambool.Front Cover: ‘Birds of Lake Pertobe, Warrnambool, BirdLife Warrnambool, Birds are in our nature’ lake pertobe, birdlife warrnambool, warrnambool -

ship's wheel, tiller, late 1800s
This is the tiller from the SS Stormbird which traded for the Orbost Shipping Company (1906-1915) between Marlo and Lakes Entrance. Mr Peter Nixon (Min. for Transport and for the Navy, 1970s) and Mr Arthur McMullen had the wheel and mast which had been recovered from the wreck of the SS Stormbird in New Guinea. Mr Nixon donated this wheel to the Orbost Historical Society in 1969.The S S Stormbird was an auxiliary-ketch which was owned by the Orbost Shipping Company (Henry James was the principal shareholder and manager of this company). It, along with the Coringle and the Wongrabelle were the main steamers owned by this company. These boats also carried sails. The significance of this item lies with its association with the shipping trade which serviced this region prior to the railway coming in 1915/16.A ship's tiller wheel, made of wood and faced with brass. The wood is painted black. It has eight spokes and handles to grip in order to steer a boat/ship. Two of the grips have strong rope or wire rope wrapped around them.ss stormbird orbost-shipping-company ship-fitting -
