Collection of personal effects that belonged to Private SIdney Spencer Plum, 3431 1st Pioneer Battalion. SIdney was born on 3/1/1894 at Dockers Plains via Wangaratta. He attended both North Wangaratta and Dockers Plains schools. He was a Blacksmith aged 21 years when he enlisted on 12/6/1915 and embarked on 11/10/1915 on board HMAT Nestor. He was wounded three times and was discharged from the AIF on 16/3/1919. Items include oval photo of Sidney Plum in the centre surrounded by four post cards, one embroidered post card of a dove with an envelope in it's beak with the Union Jack and French flag, a Greetings From The Front" booklet, "The Armour of Light" bible, "A Form of Prayer for open air services" book, Soldier's Pay Book, a "To my dear Mother" card, a black leather pouch, a rising sun badge, round gold medallion. A framed montage of personal items belonging to Private Sydney Spencer PLUM compiled by his family to honour his memory and service. In addition to general military issue the remaining items were most likely purchased whilst on leave in France and England during the first world war. Badge, Legacy Appeal Badge - $100
An example of a badge issued by Legacy for fundraising during the Legacy Appeal and Badge Week. The donation value is $100. It is possibly a modern issue. This style recreates high donation value badges from the 1960s. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. The pin was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a green tunic uniform, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. These are catalogued separately at 01948 to 01952.An example of Legacy badges that were sold to raise money for Legacy's work.Legacy Appeal badge with the Legacy torch, it is made of gold coloured metal with teal enamel around a torch and wreath. Made by students and staff at the School of Mines Ballarat in 1983 and donated to the then fledgling ATCV. Photo attached shows staff Robert Brouwers and Gayle Spicer accepting the donation.........The boxes have been in the safe keeping of Terry Peacock at the Adelaide CVA office.....terry recalls that the only injury treated using the box he recalls was when the box slammed forward when the bus stopped abruptly and hit his head...Basic safety was important from the very first projects. The Duckett family had a long term involvement in and Marjorie's commitment to the Mission, was reflected in helping run the Altona Op Shop and later with a substantial donation to the Mission (see other entries for Duckett this database); Sheila Richardson at far right. Post WW2 the word ladies seems to have been eventually dropped and the term Harbour Lights Guild used instead. Invitation/ticket and program for a screening of Sound Films made available by the Department of Information, held at St Kilda Town Hall on 12 November 1941. The films were of events in Tobruk, Bardia, Greece, Syria and Britain. Also during the evening, musical performances were provided by Amelia Scarce, J Alexander Browne, and City Organist Arnold Colman. "Tin-hat" badges were sold for 1 and 2 shillings and 1pound. The 'tin-hat' appeal was conducted from 4 Sept - 17 Sept in 1943. Organised by the Returned Soldiers League. A poster is superimposed on a hidden print.
