From an item in the Nunawading Gazette on Weds ,15th Nov 1972 , this item was a gift of Mrs. Jennie Wagg and that it was given to her mother, Mrs. L.L.Bruce, when she was married 93 years ago(ie.1879). It is understood that it was purchased in 1855.Solid iron frame with three wooden rollers. Hakata doll was given to RACS as a gift from the Japanese College of Surgeons. Made by Tomi Kono for Kyugetsu,Toyko. Kyugetsu is a famous doll store in the Asakusabashi district of Tokyo. This was founded in the Edo period and has been making dolls for 150 years.This elaborately costumed ceramic doll has its origins in simple clay figurines first produced in the Hakata district of the Japanese city of Fukuoka in the 17th century. They made their appearance in the West at the Exposition Universelie in Paris in 1900 by which time they had been transformed from toys into an artform. Most dolls are inspired by figures from the theatre: Noh, Kabuki and Ukiyo-e. These figures are sometimes connected with Geisha dolls although this is not necessarily a correct description. The robes and hairstyle are traditional but not confined to geisha.Hakata Doll dressed in elaborate kimono, in glass display case. Lemon coloured ribbon, 2.5 cm wide, hand stitched and gathered, over a horseshoe shape - possibly a cardboard shape. A narrow .5cm lemon ribbon bow is attached at the centre top and extends into a 70cm (total length then folded in half) to make a 35cm loop, to hang over the arm. Part of a collection of objects relating to the service of Lieutenant Russell Jones, 13th Battalion. The collection gives an interesting insight into the social life of a young officer during and immediately following the end of the war. Regimental No 3350 later Lieutenant Russel Norman Jones was a 20 year old linotype operator when he enlisted in the 13th Battalion AIF 6 August 1915. He had 4 years cadet service and two years CMF prior to enlistment. He was wounded in action on two occasions and returned to Australia in September 1919 on SS Suevic. Example of community support for men serving overseas in World War 1 (1914-1918). Letter from Neutral Bay Parents' & Citizens' Association dated October 1917 to 3350 Corporal R N Jones D Company 13th Battalion AIF advising him that a parcel has been forwarded to London to be delivered to him for Xmas. The parcel was one of 100 sent by the Association following a successful fund raising "Entertainment & Gift Evening". E. A. Franklin Memorial Trophy (Cup) Donor: Edward Alfred Franklin Deed of Gift: Yes The trophy was originally donated by past Commodore E. A. Franklin and awarded to the International Star Class. He was Commodore in 1947/50 and again in 1953/55. After his death in 1962, his son Rae Franklin changed the deed of the gift to become the E. A. Franklin memorial trophy and with the decline of the Star Class was for a short time then awarded to the Soling Class, and then to the E22 class. However, it seems to have been awarded to the Dragon class instead and perhaps the Spooks Franklin Trophy which is awarded to the E22 replaced it. First Winner: Leander, R. This clock was bought by the late Henry Sebire of 'Mont de Lancey' Wandin Yallock, at a clearing sale of Mrs Newey's at Seville about the year 1890; After his death in July 1902 the clock was given to his eldest son, one of his Executors, (Henry T. Sebire) of Ivanhoe, who died on 29th November 1935. On 6th February 1945 nearly 10 years later Mrs H. T. Sebire gave the clock to Wandin T. Sebire of Wandin North, who very much appreciated the gift. The clock was called for at Ivanhoe by Len Sebire, on 21st March 1945. Wandin T. Sebire. The clock was oiled and repaired by Mr Upton Watchmaker of Wandin North returned by him on 4th Dec 1951. Oiled again and returned 7th Feb. 1953.A tall narrow pendulum wooden wall clock with a white round clock face, with Roman numerals, elaborate fine hands and a brass pendulum enclosed in a glass faced compartment which has a decorative dark wood at the top. There are small clips at the top and bottom to open the case door. A brass key is stored inside the cabinet.This note was attached to the donation sheet.
