He owned it from 1901 until 1919. Thomas Marshall was the owner from 1919 - 1972. After 1972 it became Marshall's Hotel Pty Ltd . From 1981 there have been various owners. This photo shows people at the running of the Orbost Cup in 1890s. The Orbost Race Club was founded in 1890. Many early members were: George Morgan, James Cowell, J. Farquhar, J. Cameron, L. Herbert, S. J. Lynn, Arch. Rodwell, J. Ashby, A. W. McLeod, W. Middleton, W. Archer, J. Pleydell and J. Drew. The races were conducted on a course laid out in a paddock of Mr James Cowell at Jarrahmond. The book belonged to Mrs Bessie Neil, a daughter of Mr and Mrs William McKenzie who came from Scotland, possibly in the 1860s, and were employed at Glenample station, near Port Campbell. In about 1905, the Neills moved to South Africa, and the cookery book went with them. Recently Mrs Roger Pearce, formerly Lorraine Snell, who is married to a great grandson of Bessie Neill, thought it fitting that the book should be returned to this locality, and sent it to her mother, Mrs Mary Snell. These pages of accounts are from the firm of Mackay Taylor, Lawyers, a prominent firm in Warrnambool for over 100 years. The Warrnambool legal businesses of George Mackay and James Fletcher merged in 1893 and was known as Fletcher and Mackay. In the 1920s Mr Mackay took J. McD Taylor as a partner and the premises at 131 Kepler Street were built about that time, with the firm being known as Mackay and Taylor. After the original partners died there was a succession of partners with the legal firm continuing as Mackay Taylor until the 1990s. These account sheets from a prominent 20th century legal firm in Warrnambool are of considerable importance as they document the legal records of many Warrnambool and district personalities from the early 20th century. The information contained in the sheets will therefore add to the known history of many local people from the past and will be very useful to researchers.These are handwritten accounts for bills to be paid to Mackay Taylor Lawyers for services rendered. The accounts are described in detail and are written on quarto size paper with the requisite red lines already printed on the pages. There are over 100 sheets and they date from 1938 to 1940. The Hallford truck was made by J & E Hall, of Dartford, England, whose business commenced in 1785. In 1926 the Fisher family of Mongan's Bridge took delivery of the 1923 Hallford truck which was used on the farm to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory in Tangambalanga. In 1967, the truck was sold to Mr Greg Bedstead and other members of the Kiewa Valley Historical Society for the KVHS who reimbursed them at a later date. The truck was housed at the Butter Factory for many years and was paraded on special occasions.This truck was used to transport cream to the Kiewa Butter Factory from the Fisher family's dairy farm at Mongan's Bridge. At other times a tyre was removed and a belt attached to run a chaff cutter. This truck has historical significance as it is presentative of vehicles which were used by farmers to transport cream to the butter factories by a local family. Furthermore, it has social significance as KVHS members combined their finances to purchase this truck so it would be part of our collection. This booklet gives the Rules and Regulations and the Scale of Fees for the Warrnambool General Cemetery as from 1902. The booklet rescinded the Rules and Regulations of 1855 and amongst the 1902 Rules it is noted that no catacombs or wooden structures were allowed by the Trustees. It was also noted that no child under ten was permitted into the cemetery grounds unless under adult supervision. The charge for an adult burial was £1 and ten shillings for a child under ten. The Warrnambool Cemetery is in Otway Road, Warrnambool and was first gazetted in 1853 with Mr Whittet as the first Sexton. This booklet is of considerable interest because it gives the Rules and Regulations and the Scale of Charges of the Warrnambool General Cemetery as laid down in 1902. The Trustees at the time were William Ardlie, a prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Samuel Nettleton, a well-known Warrnambool shopkeeper and J.H.Allan, a member of a pioneering family in the Warrnambool district. This is a small booklet containing the Rules and Regulations of the Warrnambool General Cemetery. It contains four double-sided pages with printed material on all of the pages. The cover is pale yellow and the printing on the front cover has a black edging. There is some silverfish damage on the page edges. The Rosebrook Cheese and Butter Factory was opened in November 1888 by Messrs Lydiard &T F Rutledge & was a cooperative factory managed by Mr. Goldie. It operated out of the former Rosebrook Flour Mill which was built on the banks of the Moyne River near the Rosebrook bridge in the late 1840s. In 1896 the factory commenced the production of the condensation of milk. The company closed in 1911. The building and machinery were sold in 1917. Rosebrook is situated about 20 kilometres from Warrnambool on the Princes Highway. This label is of some local significance as the Rosebrook Cheese and Butter factory operated for 30 years Rectangular dark blue and white label featuring text and a trade mark. The furnishing of the St Nicholas the Mariner chapel in the Williamstown's mission was donated to the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. The donor of the photographs added a note to the list of gifts: the chaise and patin were given by Mr and Mrs Percy Taylor in memory of their son Norman. He was 3rd engineering on a ship Testbank which was bombed in Bari Harbor in Italy (2 September 1943) . 'Saxam' was the home of the Kaye family (1886-1888) then William Santon, a former councillor and Mayor of Heidelberg. Saxam Homestead is a distinctive and substantial timber homestead built in the late 1880s as one of the notable rural properties in the St Helena area. [Photo G. Studley]. Black and white photograph depicting a dog (named Jack) carrying newspaper delivery from the railway station up Were Street (to the Post Office). Mr. and Mrs Musselwhite ran the post office and owned Jack (the Alsatian dog) which was trained to go down to the railway station each day about 3pm and collect the daily parcel of evening newspapers, delivered by train, and take the bundle up to the newsagency. James Jones was the son of Philip Jones, a Chairmaker, and Ann Jones who settled in East Brighton after the sale of land c1852 in the area of the Henry Dendy Special Survey of 1841. Mary Ann Moore was the daughter of Thomas Moore, a Gardener, and Sarah Harris who also settled in Brighton c1852. James and Mary Ann Jones settled and raised their family in East Brighton now Bentleigh. Mr John Herron resided at 4 Vickery St Bentleigh until 1989. Hamilton Hill (Harold Hill 1858- July 1910) was a baritone singer born in Bendigo. In 1897 he was a member of Mr Bracy's Opera Company. In 1899 he left for San Francisco and then onto London in 1910. He began recording on both cylinders and discs in London in 1903 (as such he was the first Australian to make recordings for a mass audience). He toured extensively in Britain and the US, with occasional return tours to Australia. Mr. Giddings is a minister in the Mersey parish, based in Devonport, and secretary of the Mersey-Lyell presbytery. Brian Giddings was born in Mildura, Victoria. He worked as an optometrist's technician until he candidated for the Methodist ministry in 1969. After graduation and ordination he served in the St. Arnaud and Lara-Meredith parishes." Eric Roger Webb moved to Mitcham with his family in about 1932. They lived at 443 Mitcham Road and owned all the land up to Simpson Street. The land was a grass paddock and he planted native trees and shrubs around the perimeter. The Webbs has three children: Eric, Dean and Donald. Mr Webb worked in the public service. He was a councillor of the Shire of Blackburn and Mitcham and later of the city of Nunawading between 1940 and 1949. The ground floor of "Denderah" was built in 1880 for Mr D White. In 1910 the upper floor was designed by architect William Beebe for George Victor Lansell, son of George Lansell. When George Victor died in 1958, the house was incorporated into Catholic College, Bendigo. It was renamed Coolock House after a property in Ireland by the same name, that was inherited by Catherine McCauly enabling her to begin her charitable work educating and finding work for the poor in Dublin. Fifty nine acres of land was reserved for a park in1861, and the first gardener began setting out the gardens in 1870. The conservatory was built in 1897 and is the last building of its type in a public park.The conservatory was designed by Mr G. Minto, city surveyor at the time. The building is 72 feet long and 24 feet wide. The walls re twenty two feet high and are topped by a lantern roof, adding a further six feet. An Article in The Herald (18 Feb 1931) records that: "FAIRVIEW OFFICIALS - AT the annual meeting of the Associates of the Fairview Golf Club the following office bearers were elected: President, Miss A, Simcocks; secretary, Miss B. Williamson; captain, Miss A. Shiells; committee, Misses Tresise, Walters, Brown and McLachlan. The captain reported that the shield presented by Mr and Mrs Bourne for competition among the clubs associated with the metropolitan mental hospitals had been won by Fairview associates, who will hold it for one year."The trophy has historical significance as an item associated with the Melbourne Mental Hospital in the 1930s and also of social significance in that it relates to recreational pursuits undertaken by staff of the Hospital.Wood and silver plate shield won by the ladies team of Fairview Golf Club in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. Raheen is a 120 year old Victorian house owned by Richard and Jeanne Pratt. Mrs Jeanne Pratt commissioned the book and this copy was presented to Sue Barnett on a visit by members of the Boroondara Historical Societies.
