Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE DIGGING - THE DIGGERS, c1800s
... goldfields ...Diggers & Mining. The Digging - The Diggers. Slide: With regard to the statements of the universal unchecked prevalence of crime and disorder on the workings detailed with such effrontery and recklessness in the profligate public prints of this colony itself, or greedily retailed and commented upon for evident purposes in the New South Wales press, all I can say is that they are not true. . . Viewing the position and character of the not inconsiderable number of persons frequenting the diggings, a far greater amount of crime might prevail without the Government of the colony . . . Being in any degree justly blameable. (Continued) Markings: 61 994.LIF:6. Used as a teaching aid.hanimounteducation, tertiary, goldfields -

Constantly excited by aspects of their occupation, much that is repulsive and demandable. . . Commonly called open crime does not exist there to a greater extent than in towns. . . . . In all my wanderings there I never experienced conduct but courtesy and kindness.. . (From the Book, 'Notes of a Digger and Gold Digger's Guide', by James Bonwick. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE DIGGING - THE DIGGERS, c1850s
... goldfields ...Diggers & Mining. The Digging - The Diggers. Slide; An article titled 'Mems From The Mount' At Eagle Hawk Gully, Bendigo, five men were plundering a tent - the inmates shouted out lustily; some of the occupants of tent near at hand rushed out with firearms, and it being moonlight, observed the robbers, and, firing into them, killed three on the spot. At the junction of Forest Creek and Bendigo roads there is a coffee shop, which twelve men attempted to attack the other evening; but a couple of bright double-barrelled fowling pieces, held by the resolute hands inside the coffee shop plainly showed them that possession; so the scoundrels skulled of. Not with-standing these stories, the Diggers generally are quiet and peaceable. While penning these few remarks, I have just heard of the discovery of another murder at the New Bendigo Flat Diggings. Document - BENDIGO GOLDFIELD - HISTORY OF, FOR MELBOURNE EXHIBITION 1880
Yellow covered booklet 'History of the Bendigo Goldfield from its commencement in 1851 to June 1881' Presented with the Eaglehawk Specimen Case and giving a description of its contents, for transmission with the said case to England. Dedicated to G.D. Peters, Esq, London, by Mr. Hay Kirkwood, Eaglehawk. Inside first page ( un-numbered) 'The Bendigo Goldfield Compiled by Messrs Hay Kirkwood and Wm. Welch. The Rise and Progress. At the latter end of 1851, a few enterprising pioneers, with Captain Harrison, now police magistrate of Castlemaine, made their way from Forest Creek ( Castlemaine ) 30 miles distant, to a place on the Bendigo Creek, now called Golden Square, then a squatter's run, where rich auriferous ground was met with. The new soon spread far and near, and the world was soon startled with the intelligence that another very extensive goldfield had been discovered, the importance of which may be gathered from the fact that in the month of June, in the following year, six months after the first sod was raised, 80,000 ounces of pure native gold was taken by Melbourne.Printer: W.
