Photographs relating to the Rhyll Cairn constructed by James Findlay. Unveiling by The Earl of Stradbroke on 20th February 1923. Built to commemorate the discovery of Westernport by George Bass 4th January, 1798. Visits followed by Lieut James Grant March 1801, Lieut John Murray December 1801. The French under Capt. Baudin April, 1802 and Capt D'Urville November 1826. One of a collection of photographs donated by Mr J. W. Gliddon and used in his book "Phillip Island in Picture and Story"Photograph of Surgeon George Bass who came ashore on Phillip Island on the morning of January 5th 1798At seven o'clock on the morning of January 5th 1798 the famous British navigator Surgeon George Bass stepped ashore on Phillip Island and became the first known white man ever to do so. He had sailed from Sydney in an open whaleboat with six able seamen. Of this voyage by Bass, Matthew Flinders said, "It had probably no equal in the annals of maritime history." -
