The second St Mary's Catholic Church Eltham was located at the corner of Main Road and Henry Street, Eltham and was opened/blessed October 13, 1912. The wooden church was built to replace an earlier brick church also known as St Mary's (1865-1912), which had been situated on the main road near present day Wingrove Park. The church and land cost £1,400 (Evelyn Observer). The wooden church was destroyed by fire in 1961. This modern (1960s) style church was built to replace the destoyed St Mary's and was called Our Lady of Help Christians. The Australian Vietnam Forces National Memorial is located on Anzac Parade in Canberra, the Nation's Capital. In May 1988 the Federal Government announced its support for the project. In August 1988 the first official Vietnam Veterans’ Day was held. In September, the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Ben Humphries, launched two television commercials designed to encourage donations and handed over a cheque for $12,500. Subsequent support from the Federal Government brought this to $250,000. However the bulk of the funds cam from public donation, together with some corporate sponsorship. The final cost for the memorial was just over $1.2 million. The Traralgon War Memorial was originally erected in memory of the fallen soldiers of World War One. The Gippsland Times of 01 March 1923."On Sunday a memorial that has been erected in memory of the fallen soldiers of the district was unveiled. The ceremony was performed by Mr G. H.Wise, and addresses were delivered by Mr W West, M.LA. the president of the shire and local clergymen. The memorial, which cost £700, and contains 54 names of young men who made the supreme sacrifice is a lifesized figure of an Australian soldier and is made white Italian marble. It now commemorates Australian servicemen and women who have served in all wars and conflicts. Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton was born in Williamstow in c1889, the daughter of Henry Culter Colton and Elizabeth Georgina Lucas. This photo was taken on her engagement to Albert George Harbert. They married in 1912 and moved into the house Albert had built at 237 Union Road. The house had cost him £240 to build. During his career he built a number of houses in Surrey Hills. Phoebe had worked as a seamstress prior to marriage, earning 2/6d a week. They had 2 daughters Unice and Norma. Unice remained single. Norma married Henry Jamieson. In 2023 The Royal Australian Mint has released a Legacy Centenary Coin. The coin is available in a limited mintage of 30,000. The reverse of the coin features a sculpted interpretation of the Legacy logo torch cupped by a pair of hands with the title text ‘Centenary of Legacy • 100 Years of Service’ circling the design around the edge of the coin. Framed portrait of John Wicking who was President of the Association for the Blind 1973-1984 as well as a generous benefactor. It is part of a series of paintings commissioned by the AFB Board to commemorate the work of past presidents of the organisation. Mr. Wicking wears a navy suit, white shirt and navy blue Kiwi tie. He was Managing Director and Chairman of Kiwi International when he was introduced to the Committee in 1971. With a natural air of authority, he was known to be both strong and wise. One of the first hurdles Mr Wicking faced following his election as President in 1973 was understanding the health service system and sorting out the differing views of committee members over recommendations for projects costing hundreds of thousands of dollars with no funds to implement them. The ten years of his Presidency were a time of exceptional growth and expansion. He was instrumental in acquiring an adjacent property to those already owned in Glenferrie Road in 1974 at a cost of $120,000, on which the Low Vision Clinic was erected – the first of its type in Australia. Land was also bought in both the metropolitan and country areas for future expansion. Day care centres were opened in Ballarat and Bendigo and new metropolitan services commenced. Mr Wicking formed a committee to explore the possibility of a radio station people unable to read standard print. As a result 3RPH commenced broadcasting in 1981. After his retirement as President, Mr. Wicking continued as a committee member until 1994. The bearer of this ticket was George Thomas Henry Phillpot, who was only 17 years old when he sailed on the S.S. Ballarat (II), built in 1921. (The first S.S. Ballarat was built in 1911 and sunk after being hit by a torpedo in 1917 while serving during WWI). George relates his trip from England to Australia, summarised as follows: He caught a bus from Bolton to Manchester, in the north west U.K., then the train from Manchester to London and the boat train to Tilbury Docks (near Gravesend). On the morning of June 7th 1929, the ship S.S. Ballarat sailed down the Thames estuary and into the English Channel. The next port of call was Southampton, UK, to take on board some technical equipment. The S.S. Ballarat then sailed through the Bay of Biscay. Instead of taking the customary route around the Cape of Good Hope, this trip, on her maiden voyage, was through the Suez Canal. She sailed through the Straits of Gibraltar, into the Mediterranean Sea and on to Malta, where George and others paid a local boat owner to take them ashore for a short time. They then sailed to Port Said, stopping to load cargo, then at night through the Suez Canal. They woke up early the next morning to watch the locals working on the banks of the canal. The excessive heat on board the ship caused much illness. As they travelled through the Red Sea, the heat and the smell of oil also caused sickness. On they went through the Arabian Sea to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka (which at that time was called Ceylon). A Navigation Slip, donated together with this ticket, shows the coordinates for a location 16 miles from Colombo. They again went ashore for a meal at four-pence a head and a bottle of lemonade for a penny. George and another passenger walked to the slums area and were shocked at the state of it compared to Britain’s slums. They then sailed via the Indian Ocean to Fremantle, stopping again for goods to be unloaded. While ashore, they played a game of soccer against the ship’s crew. Then on to Port Adelaide via the Great Australian Bight. Here they shopped for suitable clothing under the advice of some Australian passengers. They then arrived at Port of Melbourne on July 20th 1929, and two days later (on George’s mother’s birthday). George left for Warrnambool. He received his Citizenship Award in 1971. He conducted an electrical retail business in Liebig Street for many years. His son William became principal of the accounting business Sinclair and Wilson, on the retirement of Bill Sinclair, and was actively involved in support of many community organisations. His daughter-in-law, Glenys Phillpot, is actively involved in the Warrnambool community and local government. George was one of 3 orphans on the S.S. Ballarat. (The daughter and son-in-law of one of the other orphans also live in Warrnambool.) Herbert B.G. Larkin, whose rubber-stamped name appears on the ticket, later migrated to Australia and passed away in NSW in 1944. Of Historical Significance, this ticket is for the ship’s maiden voyage via the Suez Canal route (previously the ship travelled via the Cape of Good Hope). It is also the only existing ticket for the "S.S. Ballarat"(3rd) in our collection. Socially, it shows the fare, luggage restrictions, conditions and weekly provisions for a third-class passenger’s voyage from London to Melbourne, which has research potential. This ticket is also of significance to the Local Community, giving the background of the ancestor of a local family. It was also of Personal Significance to the bearer as he kept and preserved it in his possession for at least 46 years before donating it to our museum, together with a Navigation Slip, a map and a summary of his journey to Australia.Third Class steerage Passenger’s Contract Ticket, accompanied by the Navigation Slip, for passage on board the P & O line’s steamer, S.S. Ballarat, to Australia via the Cape Service, from Port of London to Port of Melbourne. The ticket contract is printed on both sides of a thin paper page. The documents have been completed by hand, and the pages have creases as though they have been folded. Details include the date of sailing, amount paid, and the signature of the P & O Branch Service’s representative. The contract ticket lists weekly provisions for the voyage, a disclaimer of the shipping company, a list of dangerous goods not to be carried on board, and fines. The page has straight edges, top and bottom, and perforated edges on the sides; some perforation holes are complete. A small fleur de lies is printed along the inside of each perforation, forming a decorative left and right border. Stamps and inscriptions are on the contract ticket and navigation slip, which also has a black and white photo of a steam ship.The ticket has been stamped in black, No. ‘1040’. Handwritten details are in black pen and ink. Date of departure: ‘Seventh June [192]9’ for the cost of,’33’ [poind], and the sum of ‘33’ pounds is acknowledged as received. ‘Mr George T.H. PHILLPOT’, the age is written as ‘17’, equal to the status of ‘1’ adult, the total number of persons is ‘One’. The fare is handwritten in pen £’33’ and the total £’33’. It has a purple stamp ‘HERBT. The clock was the original clock located over the bar in the Orbost Club Hotel. In 1884 J.A. Petterson built the first Orbost Club Hotel with the licence in the name of Thomas Maguire (his stepson). This hotel was the first in the area and cost 1,400 pounds to build (ref. In Times Gone By - Deborah Hall) and was actually built before Orbost was proclaimed a township - April 17 1885 The R A on the pendulum stands for: retard/advance. It is a common pendulum bob, used by many manufacturers, worldwide. Regulator clocks, sometimes referred to as pendulum clocks, were invented in the late 18th century in a quest for greater timekeeping accuracy. They were weight-driven devices. Although this book revolves around the supply of power(Electricity) from brown coal it does cover the period 1937 onwards when the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme was first mooted. This area was believed to be far away from aerial bombardment should the coastal power stations be attacked by air in World War II(1939 -1945). After the war, post 1945, the demand for a continual power supply, not affected by seasonal coastal flooding was together with a lower cost of hydro electricity power the major incentive for the Victoria Government of the day to proceed (in the 1940s) with The Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme. In 1946 Victorian government sought greater independence from the New South Wales black coal supplies.The significance of this book to the Kiewa Valley and its outlying regions is that it details why the development of an Alpine region was and now still is pocketed with a European flavour both in buildings and in town vegetation(trees and flowers). European (post World War II refugees) where attracted to these alpine areas not only for hard labouring positions but also for their technical skills and some street names offer a distinct European lineage rather than convict or of earlier English settler. The construction phase accommodation continued after completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme to become popular venues for an increasing winter tourism industry. This book has a brown hard cover encapsulated by a cream sleeve with brown and black print. On November 21, 2010 Seeing Eye Dogs Australia (SEDA) hosted an annual public open day at its National Kennel and Puppy Centre in Kensington. People were invited to learn more about SEDA and participate in guided tours where they could explore the extensive facilities, which featured a rehabilitation therapy pool, breeding centre, public viewing platform directly into the heart of its kennels and puppy play centre. The district of Strathfieldsaye was proclaimed in 1861 and named a Shire on the 17th September in 1866. It remained a shire until amalgamation in 1994 when it became part of the City of Greater Bendigo. The shire was located 8 km to the south- east of Bendigo and covered an area of 601 square kilometres and extended from the Calder Highway to the Coliban and Campaspe Rivers. The shire's administration activities were centred at the Strathfieldsaye Shire Hall which was built in 1869 at a cost of £700 based on a design by George Steane, the shire surveyor and built by George Pallett of Sandhurst. Constructed of red brick, the hall has a unique ventilation system with hollow walls open at the top and bottom to ensure a draught to cool the building in summer. Australia Post issued a stamp featuring the Legacy Torch. It will be in general circulation as well as available as commemorative packs and first day covers. The stamp design presents the iconic branding of Legacy Australia and echoes the colours of the Australian flag. The torch design prominently placed in the stamp represents the undying flame of service and sacrifice, the foundation of Legacy’s existence. The body of the torch is presented in a gold colour, signifying generosity and compassion. In its wreath of laurel, with its points inverted in remembrance, is the guerdon of honour, to represent those who gave their lives for their country. An article about Ivanhoe Grammar School students who were involved in the school's 'activities week' where the student undertook community service. Legacy found six houses in need of painting and 66 boys were given the task. The Legacy widow, Mrs Drowley of Fairfield appreciated their work and provided tea and scones. Otherwise it was at no cost to her. Pictured were Neil Gaule, Matt Campbell, Con Markidis, Neil Jordan, Peter Augustes and Bruce Permezel. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity.
