This photograph was captured at an undisclosed location and at an unidentified time but likely dates to approximately 1870. The photographer's details are not recorded and the identities of the men in the image are also not known. This image depicts a group of 10 men in typical miners fashion. Four of them are sat on a large log with one holding a small dog. Six miners stand behind those sitting. All these men are wearing a white button-up shirt and tan coloured work trousers. They wear heavy boots and seven have included a dark vest over their shirt. The man holding the dog has a pipe in his mouth. Two of these men are clean shaven with the remainder sporting a moustache and two with a beard. The ages of these men vary from late 20s to middle age. This group of men are located in a mining location with what appears to be an open cut mine in the background of the image. The ground is muddy and has elements which can help identify it as a mining location based on the condition of the landscape. The bottom of the men's trousers are muddy which provides the assurance that these men were working in this location when their photograph was captured. In the background there is one structure, possibly a dwelling, and bush which identifies the location as Australia. Open cut sluicing is a method used to extract gold and other precious metals from beneath the surface of the earth. This technique involved the use of high-powered hoses which broke down the soil enabling miners to come along and search this soil for gold. After the gold rush of the early 1850s, diggers had to enlist the assistance of heavy machinery and techniques like hydraulic sluicing in order to reach gold because the surface alluvial gold had already been discovered and removed. This heavy machinery was not used until after 1853. The search for gold is ingrained into the history of Victoria and therefore, images like this one which portray an open cut sluicing site can reveal important information for society and technology for the date when the photograph was taken. This image is of important historical significance for its ability to convey information about sluicing and the methods used to find gold in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It also shows a location where sluicing was undertook which provides insight into the impact of sluicing on the environment at a time when it was done. Images, like this one, of Australian gold rush history can reveal important information about the social and environmental impact of this period. This image depicts diggers standing in a mining location and therefore, this image has the capacity to reveal or support significant information for researchers studying the fashion and social status of diggers in Australia in approximately 1870. It can also provide information on the landscape of Australia in this period and the impact of mining for gold on both society and the Australian landscape. Edith (Alice) WATSON (1914–2010) Murtoa | Australia Alice Watson studied at the Ballarat Technical Art School (at the School of Mines, Ballarat) from 1930 until 1933. These works include commercial art, advertising and catalogue illustrations as well as figure construction and fashion-plate designs. Watson sat several departmental exams, including drawing and painting plant forms from nature, lettering, Composition of Form and Colour and advanced General Design, as well as dressmaking and embossed leatherwork. Her folio applies many Australian native floral elements to design. Upon graduating, Watson taught at the Murtoa High School, living with her parents until their deaths in 1972 and 1988 when she was 74 years old. Alice Watson died in Ballarat, aged 95, having conserved her beautiful student folio, which was generously gifted to the Federation University permanent Historical Collection by the Watson family. Full length skirt, with a three-quarter length over-skirt, edged in braided embroidery. Over-skirt is attached at the waistline, with a band of tape, and separates on the left hand side waistline. Stitched to the underskirt at the front, and edged with a .5cm dark olive coloured braid. The braid extends around the hemline of the overskirt in a looped pattern. Fabric has a woven stripe-a narrow stripe of lighter colour, and a .75cm stripe of dark grey edged with tan. Skirt fully lined with brown cotton fabric. Centre back plackett fastens with one large metal hook and eye, and six smaller hooks, and hand made cotton loops. Skirt has matching bodice 11400.744. This two piece outfit - skirt and bodice, was made by Laura's Mother in 1908, and mostly by hand. She wore it also to Mass in 1913. Cap or arm Badge for the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria (ESCo) "Conductor" with conductor staff number "17" Made from a manufactured and steel plate, nickel plated to indicate the staff number position held by the wearer as part of their uniform. Letters and number stamped, with horizontal lines. At each side of the badge are vertical holes through which light leather straps have been fixed with button holes to enable securing the badge on an arm. Leather straps black on one side and tan on the other. On the rear, silver soldered on are two loops at each end of the badge to enable badge to be sewn or fitted with clips onto the cap or the uniform. The handmade basket has a variety of pieces of vintage sewing items as listed in the detailed Description. These would have been used in the home for repairs as well as pieces sewn. Mrs Pratt owned the sewing basket and it's contents - she lived in Beenak Road, Wandin, Victoria.An open rectangular shaped cane woven sewing basket with three bands of green and tan raffia woven around the sides. It had a lid which is missing but there is one twisted wire loop where the lid would have been attached. The front cover lists the brand, and detail already mentioned, with 1955 Business Diary No.41 crossed out and 1965 Petter Fielding LOG book written over them in blue biro. The printer and publisher is printed at the bottom. There is tan cloth tape holding the covers together on the left. Inside it has the calendar for 1955, postal, money order and telegraph Information along with other miscellaneous information. It was used as a Log Book for a Petter Fielding engine which was manufactured in 1952. The entries start 21/7/65 and finish Sun 2/3/2008. 14A Built in 1914 and painted Canadian red & dark brown, this locomotive was issued to the Colac to Crowes line and saw service on all four lines, but mostly on the Colac to Crowes line. It was withdrawn from service in 1962 at Colac and sent to Newport Workshops for storage where it remained, except for a brief time at Bendigo North Work-shops in 1963. After overhaul, it was brought to Belgrave in 1965 where it has seen almost continuous service since. In 1978, it became the first of the preserved NA’s to trial a historic colour scheme for which the Canadian red & dark brown was chosen, but ended up mistakenly being painted a “London Tan” & dark brown. In 1996 it received a more correct Canadian red livery. This “temporary” trial livery has now given way to 14A’s designated livery of all-over black. When Carl Sandner began Sandner and Sons Eucalyptus Distillery in 1875, he probably had no idea his archives would end up in the National Library. The distillery operated until 1967 and the Uley Street site was the subject of archaeological monitoring in 2011 prior to Bendigo’s new ambulance station being built there. But his great great grandson Alec Sandner handed over some mint-condition documents that he has held on to for many years. “I had this tin and the more I opened it, the more interested in it I became,” Mr Sandner said. “There was a letter from the Kaiser in 1888 because the business had written to them asking them to endorse. They had politely refused. “There was also a letter from the Italian consulate saying the King of Italy was satisfied with the product he received. Dr. Gwen Wilson, Emeritus historian, gifted this book at ANZCA's first independent Annual Scientific Meeting held in Launceston in 1994. Dr Wilson presented this gift after her speech about the life of William Russ Pugh and his significant contribution to anaesthesia in Australia. It is unclear as to how the book came into Dr Wilson's possession. Published in London, 1845, for Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, this book was formally owned by general practitioner Dr William Russ Pugh, being the first medical practitioner in Australia to administer ether anaesthetic on 7 June 1847, in Launceston. The author of the book, P E De Strzelecki acknowledges Pugh for his assistance during his stay in Launceston and for allowing him the use of his laboratory for the analysis of the soils and minerals that were subsequently reported in this book (Page 131). Tan coloured cloth book with an embossed circular motif on the centre of the front and back cover. The same embossed motif is repeated four times along the spine of the book. An embossed design of small, four petal flowers borders the edge of the front and back cover. The title of the book 'Strzelecki's New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land' is printed in gold on the spine. The cloth has come unstuck at various places around the spine and a small section is missing from the base of the spine. The cover is worn and has numerous dark stains possibly from mould. The book contains 19 engraved and lithographed plates. This includes a handcoloured octavo folding, geological map, bound as a frontispiece, depicting the NSW coast down to Gippsland and Tasmania, a fold out single colour geological cross section of the Newcastle Coal Basin, 14 plates illustrating shellfish and flora and three tinted lithographs. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Canestoga Wagon replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880's. A model of a long covered Conestoga Wagon with two horses, brown and tan. The cream fabric covers curved shaped metal bands and is laced with string around the base to attach it to the wagon.It has a green base, green wooden seat and footrest. There are two wooden barrels attached by wire on one side and the other side has a luggage box. It has two small gold painted spoked wheels with painted black tyres at the front and two larger ones at the back. The forerunner of the Conestoga Wagon had its origin in Europe as a mobile home for shepherds and nomads in the early 1800's. The east coast of America became home to people from all over Western Europe so the old wagon designs were carried to the New World. The wagons were named after a river in Lancaster County Pennsylvania where the Stutz family built them for the western treks of history. This model of a horse drawn Baker's Cart replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880 and early 1900's. A model of a single horse drawn red enclosed Capital Bakery Cart which is a lightweight four wheeled one passenger horse drawn carriage where the driver sits behind. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with brown rims, grey and black painted seating two gold coach lamps and a sloped red and tan footrest for the driver. There is a brake lever on the right side of the cart which activates the brake on the back wheel. At the rear are two ventilated gold doors and cupboards underneath the seat. There are two silver metal tubular shafts on each side to surround the brown horse which has a black tail and mane. It has the necessary horse tack for cart use to help the driver communicate with the horse. These carrier carts or vans were four wheeled medium weight Commercial Vehicles which were a very familiar sight in the horse drawn era. Every kid 'whipped behind' bread carts. The first models were imported from England around 1870 and later the local coachworks built many models. There is an emblem at the top of the paper, it has a circular wreath of ribbon and flowers. On the left is a bunch of flowers, a musical instrument on the right and in the centre of the wreath is a boy kneeling and rolling a bundle of tied up stems. The paper is from Court Queen of the West No. 3707 of the Devon & Cornwall District held at the Odd Fellows & Forester's Hall, Penzance in the County of Cornwall. The clearance states that Brother James Hall a single man, now aged 29 years, by trade a Coachman was admitted a Member of the above Court, on the Sixth day of July 1869 and has paid all Dues and Demands up to the 27th day of June 1876. A vintage 1903 hardcover children’s book with the title Chatterbox printed with white lettering at the top of the front cover, which has a green coloured background with an illustration in a large circle showing a girl winding a handle on a wishing well in a garden. The publisher details are printed at the bottom, with Price Three Shillings printed in red letters at the very top. The covers have broken away from the cotton bound spine. Brown's Self-Interpreting Family Bible. London: John G. Murdoch, circa 1875. Thick folio, full dark brown morocco, beveled edges, all edges gilt, brass trim, clasps and catches. The title, Holy Bible is printed in an indented star shaped decorative surround, around the edges of the letters in the middle of the front cover. The spine has four bands across it with Holy Bible printed in gold lettering at the top. The beautifully coloured Title Page is very decorative all over with tan, pale green, dark green and white patterns. Opposite is a black and white plate depicting Moses in his basket in the bulrushes with his mother hiding behind him. There is a plain black and white title page too with full details, including publisher and other details. At the front, information about the Reverend John Brown is included over several pages as well as details of his Monument Inscription in Haddington Churchyard 19th June A.D. 1787, aged 65 years. Following this is an Introduction to the Right Understanding of the Oracles of God. There are many black and white, plus coloured plates included throughout the Bible. Pp. 1123 (Bible) At the back are many additional inclusions: Alphabetical Index, A Collection of names given to Jesus Christ and others, The Psalms of David in Metre, Hymns and Passages of Scripture Paraphrased. This photograph was taken in approximately 1870 and depicts four male miners standing in mining sluice at the Three Mile Goldfields. These men are wearing typical attire for 1870s gold miners. They wear white shirts, tan coloured pants with water proof shoes and most of the men are wearing an apron to prevent their clothing from becoming too dirty from the mud. Each man is wearing a wide brim hat and hold large wooden tools used for sorting through the sluice. Three of the four men have full beards. The photograph was donated to the Burke Museum by R. Ziegenbein before 2001 but the photographer and the individuals captured in the photo are unknown. The image depicts the landscape of the Three Mile Goldfields during a period when open cut sluicing was undertaken to reach gold. Open cut sluicing is a method used to extract gold and other precious metals from beneath the surface of the earth. This technique involved the use of high-powered hoses which broke down the soil enabling miners to come along and search this soil for gold. After the gold rush of the early 1850s, diggers had to enlist the assistance of heavy machinery and techniques like hydraulic sluicing in order to reach gold because the surface alluvial gold had already been discovered and removed. This heavy machinery was not used until after 1853. The Three Mile Goldfields was a site of rich alluvial gold deposits located about 5 km south of Beechworth in Victoria. Today, the location of this gold deposit is called Baarmutha. It was a popular area for gold mining in the 1850s but became largely abandoned by the following decade. In 1865, a man named John Pund recognized that the area could be potentially rich if a better water supply could be obtained. He secured a 15 year license with three other miners. Within the next five years, these men had constructed 19 km of water race going from Upper Nine Mile Creek to Three Mile Creek. By 1881, these four men had delivered 950,000 gallons to the Three Mile Sluicing area which is depicted in this photograph. Pund was later go into partnership with John Alston Wallace who would become owner of the Star Hotel in Beechworth. The Three Mile sluicing location continued to be operational until 1950. Sluice box workers were a vital part of gold mining regardless of how inefficient they were in the recovery of gold. After using hydraulic sluicing to cut away the earth, miners would use the big wooden boxes depicted in the image to catch the earth which would then be sifted for gold. However, accidents would occur often which would result in the gold washing away and unable to be recovered. It was not a very efficient system because the gold, which was alluvial and thus very fine, would often pass through the sluice box undetected.The search for gold is ingrained into the history of Victoria and therefore, images like this one which portray an open cut sluicing site can reveal important information for society and technology for the date when the photograph was taken. This image is of important historical significance for its ability to convey information about sluicing and the methods used to find gold in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It also shows a location where sluicing was undertook which provides insight into the impact of sluicing on the environment at a time when it was done. Images, like this one, of Australian gold rush history can reveal important information about the social and environmental impact of this period. This image depicts diggers standing in a mining location and therefore, this image has the capacity to reveal or support significant information for researchers studying the fashion and social status of diggers in Australia in approximately 1870. It can also provide information on the landscape of Australia in this period and the impact of mining for gold on both society and the Australian landscape. Military advisors arrived beginning n 1950. U.S. involvemeny escalated in the early 1960s and combat units were deployed beginning in 1965. Invollvement peaked in 1968 at the time of the Tet Offensive. Despite a peace treaty signed by all parties in january 1973, fighting continued. In response to the anti-war movement, the U.S. Congress passed the Case-Church Amendment in June 1973 prohibiting furtherdirect U.S. military intervention without Congressional authorization yet the U.S.was still heavily invested in the war until 1975, when North Vietnam captured Saigon. North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year. The war exacted a huge human cost in terms of facilities, including 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers.
