The four people were guests at the official launch of the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden in Bulla, which took place on 12th December 1999. They are from L-R: John Burgess, Margaret and Edward Fanning, early Bulla residents and Mr. Johnson, grandson of James Stewart Johnson, who was the Chief Superintendent in the Victorian Colonial government and in 1864 established his vineyard and winery at 'Craiglee' in Sunbury.The Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden at Bulla has many of the roses in it that Alister Clark developed on his 'Glenara' property at Bulla. Sketches of Stawell Water Supply Bovine Aqueduct October 5th 1881. The Grampian scheme planned by the the Borough Engineer John D'Alton. D'Alton's suggestion was that the water be carried from the source in an open channel two miles, then in a flume of timber. Later surveyed and planned a tunnel on a good line - to reduce the flume 72 miles and the main to Stawell to 15 miles. In 1900 this shop was a stationer's and newsagency owned by George Smith. It was then owned by Annie Nicholls (afterwards Annie Brown), and later by Ruby and John Sandow. Their daughter Kitty married Reg Jennings and the shop became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". The shop evolved into a grocery/general store/confectioners. This postcard is part of an album of postcards which date from late 19th century to mid 20th century. Bear's Castle is a unique and historical building constructed in the 1840s and classified by the National Trust for its design and construction techniques. The purpose of the 'castle' is contested but one theory is that it was built as a defensive citadel against attacks by bushrangers which had occurred prior to the owner, John Bear, ordering its construction.This postcard is in an album of postcards dating from the late 19th century to mid 20th century. It reflects the popularity of collecting postcards in Australia which reached a height in the early 1900s until around 1920. John (Peter) Heinrich Erdman arrived in Port Phillip aboard the Wilhelmsberg on 24 August 1853 aged 26. He was naturalised on 25 November 1859. His naturalisation certificate has the wrong ship entered. Peter married Johanna Karoline Wanke in the Lutheran Church in 1857. Karoline was the daughter of Johann Gottlieb and Helene (Mueller) Wanke. Joseph Edward Teague (1859 -1925) Son of John and Annie Ellison, Joseph was born at Heathcote. Joined the police force in 1890 and had the number 4324. He served at several stations including Elmore and Strathfieldsaye. During his career he received several commendations for arrests and convictions. He left the Police Force in 1912 and died 112/11/1925. He is buried at Fawkner cemetery Two documents. John Brownless No 6317 enlisted in the 10th Battery 4th Field Artillery Brigade on 12.8.1915 aged 25 years. Embarked 18.11.1915 for Eygpt. He was awarded the "Military Medal" for actions in the field. He was discharged from the AIF on 16.3.1919 medically unfit not due to misconduct. He served 1170 days overseas. The lady pictured is Efstathia (Toula) Black (Mavrokefalos) nee Raftopoulos. Toula married Constantine Mavrokefalos. Toula was president of the first Greek women's committee established in Melbourne in 1917, the Greek Women's Oganisation. Constantine was a founding member of the IPS. Her daughter's Nina and Olga Black were both very active in the Ithacan and Greek communities. John Black is photographed with his son Dennis, who is wearing the uniform of the Australian Defence Forces as the photograph was taken in 1954, he may have been doing National Service at the time. From 1951 to 1959, all young 18 year old men were required to do compulsory National Service. This is a family photograph of Spiros Raftopoulos (Levendi), his wife Hariklia and sons Stathi and Naki, and daughter, Apostolo (Loula). The photograph was taken about circa 1937, four years after the family arrived in Australia (1934) and settled in Merbein . This book is a sixth grade reader which all Victorian students would have read during the 1940's. The book is made up of poems and stories, some which are still known and told today. Some pages have drawings that relate to the story of poems. This is historically significant due to showing what children read during the 1940's in schools across Victoria. Also it is a good comparison to what grade six children read now. Therefore it has good interpretation value and would be good in local school exhibitions. The names on the book indicate that this book came from a local famil, the Johnson and was read to two children of that family which gives this good social history. Some of the pages have had their pictured colored in by the student and words that have been underlined. These could have been harder words for the students to learn and seem advanced for grade six children to read. An example of work done by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Brian Murray with Legacy in his role as patron. The Governor and his wife Lady Murray attended the Anzac commemoration ceremony for students that Legacy hold annually. Date was 1984 when Legatee Dean was president of Legacy.
