Also known as the King George V memorial building this branch of the Mission to Seamen opened in 1937 as a replacement for the old Mission in Port Melbourne. The Foundation stone was laid by the Victorian State Governor and a photograph of the event is also held in the MTSV collection. The Art Deco style building was commissioned by merchant and philanthropist, Alfred Michael Nicholas (1881-1937) and designed by prolific Melbourne-based architect Harry A. Norris (1888-1966) in 1937 best known for his commercial work in Melbourne city centre. Vera Hore (nee Ryder), the publican of the Tawonga Hotel, took this photo as she was a keen amateur photographer. Vera lived from Nov. 1909 to July 2000.Colored photo of 'Broken Bridge' over the East Kiewa River on Damm's Road with Mt Bogong, with snow, in the background of centre top. Photo Framed - Tawonga South, c1940's
Tawonga South was situated between the rural township of Tawonga and the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's construction town of Mt Beauty. The building in the fore ground of the photo was built before the Mt Beauty township was built as the occupier was working on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Barters came to work on the State Electricity Commission of Victoria's Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme before housing in the town of Mt Beauty was built. The Barters rudimentary dwelling was probably not a legal building. The photo was taken by Vera Hore (nee Ryder), the publican at the Bogong Hotel near Tawonga South where the photo was taken. Vera, 1909 - 2000, was a keen amateur photographer.Colored photo of Tawonga South with a dwelling in the bottom of the right hand corner and Mt Bogong, covered in snow, at the top. Mount Bogong located in the Alpine National Park and part of the Victorian Alps of the Great Dividing Range, is the highest mountain in Victoria, Australia, at 1,986 metres (6,516 ft) above sea level. The Big River separates the massif of the mountain from the Bogong High Plains to the south. From the nearby town of Mount Beauty to its summit, Mount Bogong rises more than 1,600 metres (5,200 ft), thus making it one of the highest peaks in Australia not only in terms of its elevation above sea level, but also in terms of actual base-to-summit prominence. Mount Bogong is a popular backcountry skiing mountain through winter but only has snow for the mid winter-spring months. It is around 30 kilometres (19 mi) by road and walking track or 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) direct to Mount Beauty. Falls Creek and Mount Hotham ski resorts are also nearby. Camping is relatively safe below the tree line but the summit ridgeline is very exposed. Emergency shelter is also available at Bivouac Hut on the Staircase Spur, and at Cleve Cole, above Camp Creek on the broad ridge to the south of the summit, and Michells Hut on the Eskdale Spur. Mt Bogong is a popular recreational venue in the Kiewa Valley for back country skiing and bush walking and is a favourite with sightseers and popular subject for photographersBlack and white photograph of Mt bogong taken from Tawonga - Thursday May 6th, 1937Handwritten on back of photograph. Photographs x 2- Bus tour of Wallaces Hut, 20/02/1970
Wallace's hut was built in 1889 and is probably the oldest surviving hut on the high plains of north-east Victoria. It was built in six weeks by Irish immigrant brothers Arthur, William and Stewart Wallace among old snow gums on a grassy plain above the snowline. The brothers held grazing leases on the High Plains and the hut was built to provide shelter for the cattlemen working there. It is probably the oldest hut on the Victorian high plains. It is part of the early history of hydroelectricity in the state and has links with early SEC meteorological data recording in the area Apart from its historical significance, Wallace’s Hut is a popular stop for tourists and photographers and is the starting point for the Wallace’s Heritage trail, which is a popular and well used hiking track, by locals and visitors alike.2 black and white photographs mounted on buff card. Christopher Watson and Caroiline Shillinglaw married in 1907. Their daughter Jean was born in 1906. This image is dated c.1905 before the birth of Jean. The Rembrandt Photo Studios (Misses I & N Hicks) operated from 284 Collins Street from 1904-1910 CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. Coloured mounts, especially maroon or green, indicate a date between 1880 and 1890. - Frost, Lenore; Dating Family Photos 1850-1920; Valiant Press Pty. Mary Shillinglaw born November 5, 1880 at Bundoora, Victoria was the sixth child of Phillip Shillinglaw and Sarah Ann (nee Kidd). She commenced school at Eltham State School No. 209 (Register No. 423) in 1885 at age 4 years. Mary did not marry and spent most of her life at Wattle Brae (Shillinglaw Cottage).
