Animal specimen - Buff-banded rail, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The buff-banded rail is a medium-sized bird in the rail family, Rallidae, known for its striking plumage and strong dispersal abilities. This species includes multiple subspecies found across Australasia and the southwest Pacific, with populations in the Philippines, where it is called tikling, and New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, where it is referred to as the banded rail or moho-pererū in Māori—and various smaller islands. This specimen was misidentified as an Australian Spotted Crake in original catalogue records and is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is a small, stocky bird with yellow legs and bill. The Buff-banded Rail has grey colouring on its neck and an orange on the nape of its neck. The torso and rear are striped with black and grey/cream colours and have white spots along the rear. The specimen has brown feathers on the wings. It stands on a wooden platform in a standing position with a paper identification tag tied around its left leg. 19c Spotted Water Crake. Helmet, Belgian
Mark 2 Belgian Clone of the British Brodie helmet. After the end of the Second World War Belgium began manufacturing their own version of the British Mk.II Helmet, which came to be known as the Belgian Mk.II Clone. This helmet was used by all services of the Belgian Military; Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as in Civil Defence. Mk.II Clones were produced from 1949 to 1952 and were very similar to the British Mk.II in almost every respect. However on closer inspection the differences are obvious, most noteably with the liner. Belgian Mk.IIs have a brown leather liner with five tongues and a brown drawstring. The cross shaped crown pad has black sorbo foam covered by leather. The underside of the leather has the Belgium Crest printed, while British helmets used oilcloth. Also unlike on British made Mk.IIs, the rims and lugs are made of mild (i.e. magnetic) steel. A Belgium Flag decal was worn on the left hand side of the shell, on all Military issue helmets. Stencilled on the liner is "COMET ABL 50", with the ABL (Armee Belge/Belgische Leger). -

Holiday Yardage Mambo, David Bowers, (exact); 2003
MEDIUM: Acrylic on paper. DESCRIPTION: Image ranges from dark brown to pale brown with white. Light colored timber, outer frame with glass covering, white board and an inner frame. A very busy piece full of activity, starting from the bottom left we have an areoplane which is perhaps how this vacation begins, the sun sits above it and a bikini clad woman who has arrived to her destination is placed above the sun. There is cruise ship, a martini glass and a whale embracing the outer scene. Waves, a surfer, a marlin and a small guitar sit at the lower right. A large car takes the viewer to the centre of the picture where we come across a giant guitar. The music is what matters, this piece dances about the canvas in mushroom pinks and chocolates. Little outlines of fish fill the gaps. A very beachy scene. The image lyes quite flat to the eye, rough stick outlines of the images above.
