Certificate - Motor Cycle Licence, Chief Commissioner of Police, Melbourne, 1916
This is a licence for a driver of a motor cycle in Victoria. The licence was issued in March 1916 to William Wines of Warrnambool. The licence was valid for one year. The form used was actually one for a motor car but the word 'cycle' was added in handwritten ink. This licence is of considerable interest as 1916 is an early date for the ownership of a motor cycle in WarrnamboolThis is a sheet of paper providing a motor cycle licence. Badge - Union badge, Wittenbach & Co, 1930's?
The badge belonged to the Donor's father - Bill Irvin, who was a SEC tram driver. Bill and his elder brother Dan, both drove trams in Ballarat. The Union badge confirmed membeship of the Union and was permitted to be worn on a uniform.Has a strong association with Bill Irvin, SEC tram driver of the 1930's and demonstrates the importance of being a union member at the time and the badge provided by the unionAustralian Tramway Employees Association (Tramways Union) badge. Badge made on a steel/ silver backing with words "Australian Tramway Employees Association" on outer edge of badge with a royal blue enamel background. In centre of badge has the Australian coat of arms with a railway type spoke wheel above the logo and underneath the coat of arms the words "Federated Australia" in a banner. Has a hole in the top of the badge for a steel ring or a method of attachment to a uniform. On back of badge has stamped into the badge "BL 42", possibly indicating Ballarat and badge number. Sign - Tramcar number "330", Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1926
Used by the MMTB to indicate to conductors and inspectors, the tramcar number. Placed on the driver's bulkhead, facing into the tram with one at either end of the tram. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport. The Flying Scotsman Pacific 4-6-2, perhaps one of the most iconic steam locomotives in the world, visited Australia in 1988-89 for a series of events associated with the country’s bicentennial celebrations. As part of the Bicentennial celebrations locomotives began to arrive in Melbourne for the AusSteam 88 exhibition from 14 October. A planned parallel run south of Seymour with NSW locomotives 3112 and 1210 and Victorian Railways J515 had to be abandoned due to late running by the NSW locomotives. A parallel run did take place on Sunday 16 October when VR R761 and NSW 3801 ran from Wodonga to Melbourne. Locomotive S300 - the ‘Matthew Flinders’ The S class diesel locomotives were built by Clyde Engineering in 1957 for the Victorian Railways. Designed as premier express passenger diesels, they assumed the ‘S class’ title from a fleet of steam locomotives. They were also given names of famous Australians. The S300 took the name ‘Matthew Flinders’. In 1962, S300 was converted from the Victorian broad gauge of 5’3” to the New South Wales gauge of 4’8.5”, in order to operate the new Southern Aurora between Sydney & Melbourne. As the locomotive grew older it was removed from these duties and was sold to Chicago Freight Car Leasing Australia (CFCLA) in 2004. Decorative object - Hansom Cabriolet Model, Chas W Davis, Unknown
The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a two horse drawn enclosed Hansom Cabriolet replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public from c.1833 until 1935. A model of a black enclosed coach which is a four wheeled passenger horse drawn vehicle where the driver sits at the front behind the two white horses. It has two large and two smaller gold painted spoked wheels with black rims and gold mudguards on the rear wheels, two gold painted coach lamps, red vinyl padded seating and four open windows with rolled up blinds. There are two doors with a step for easy access into the coach. A long brown wooden shaft separates the horses as well as the necessary horse tack for carriage use to help the driver communicate with the horses. A hand operated brake pad is on the rear wheels. The first Hansom Cabs were clumsy, dangerous awkward vehicles. The drivers were suspected of 'Rude Bohemia'. It took the refinement of Joseph Aloysius Hansom himself to clear airs and remodel the cab to a safe vehicle. It enjoyed respect from c.1833 until 1935. Functional object - Sandringham tramway - section staff, 1920s
Item used on the Victorian Railways Sandringham - Black Rock tram line for the short section of the single track of the line between the railway station in Station Street and the depot entrance in Bay Road. Tram drivers were required to carry this to prevent a head-on collision on the single-line section. Image 3 shows the driver placing the item in the "staff box" outside the depot.
