Bendigo Historical Society Inc.Administrative record - Work Book
The item is a hard cover book recording weekly work of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. A list of names is written inside the front cover. An alphabet index at the front of the book, lists types of goods and equipment. The index is followed by handwritten pages recording each week's work including goods, fittings and equipment types, client surname or business name and a numbering system. The work records have also been checked off with ticks or crosses separately. The hard cardboard cover is green with red marbling, which is worn and torn. The leather binding has peeled away from the pages and front cover but is attached to the back cover. The pages are fragile with many loose pages due to the state of the binding. The book is full and includes the date range of 29 May 1886 to 12 October 1888. Orbost & District Historical Societyregister, after 1888
Jarrahmond State School, 2745, opened on March 19 1886 with Campbell Mackay as the head teacher and operated on apart-time basis with Orbost State School, 2744. The first building, erected on the bank of the Snowy River, was moved in approximately 1892 to McLeod's Lane. In 1914 a new building was erected by George Lurkins, and this catered for the local children until a school bus service took them to Orbost in 1949. The school building was transferred also and became an integral part of Orbost State School.This school record is of immediate interest and value to the pupils and staff who have learned and taught in theJarrahmond State School. The record also has a much wider significance, to the community in which the school is situated, as a record and research tool.A hand-written school register for Jarrahmond State School. This book was owned by F.B. Dicken. Frank and May Dicken moved to Orbost in 1936 where Frank became manager of Pardew Brothers store in Nicholson Street. In 1945, Frank purchased the business and in 1947, formed a partnership with his son, Selwyn. The store was then called F.B. Dicken and Son. The premises are still retained by the Dicken family although the shop business was sold in 1981. (ref. This notebook contains cuttings from the Warrnambool Standard pasted over handwriting which appears to be orders for a business. The cuttings concern the activities of the Warrnambool Rifle Club from 1924 to 1926. Rifle shooting in Warrnambool dates from 1860 when it was part of the activities of the Volunteer Rifle Corps and other later local militia groups. As a separate organization the Warrnambool Rifle Club, still operating today, dates from 1886 with the North Warrnambool Rifle Club founded in 1928. This notebook is of minor interest as it contains a summary of the Warrnambool Rifle Club activities in the 1920s and is useful for researchThis is a note book of 100 pages with a hard board cover, red binding over staples and black printing on the front cover. This significant historical link in Melbourne’s water supply system is perhaps something we have taken for granted, or not even really noticed…it is just there! Built between 1886 and 1891 to transfer water from the Watts River near Healesville to the reservoir at Preston this aqueduct was 66 km in length and included open channels, tunnels and the use of inverted siphons to keep water flowing, to eventually service Melbourne and suburbs. These chairs originate from St Andrews Kirk, Ballarat, c1870s. The Rev William Henderson, Presbyterian Minister of Ballarat (1857 - 1886), founded Ballarat College in 1864. The chairs were is use in St Andrews Kirk during his tenure. At this time Ballarat College was situated in the grounds of St Andrews Kirk and remained there until 1912. In 1995 a plaque to this effect was erected in the grounds of St Andrews Kirk, and unveiled by Old Collegian and school Council member, Kenneth D Baird. 'Saxam' was the home of the Kaye family (1886-1888) then William Santon, a former councillor and Mayor of Heidelberg. Saxam Homestead is a distinctive and substantial timber homestead built in the late 1880s as one of the notable rural properties in the St Helena area. [Photo G. Studley]. Seated are Mr and Mrs Kaye, standing William Santon who was a local footballer, councillor and later Mayor of Heidelberg. Henry Hurst and his family settled at Allwood, Hurstbridge. It is his family that the town name comes from. In 1886 Henry had a scuffle with a bushranger known as Robert Burke in the Hurst home. During the scuffle a pistol was fired wounding both men. Burke was overpowered by some station hands and placed under arrest. Hurst later died. The building and the organ were seriously damaged by fire on 1 April 1970, started by a painter's blowtorch. The Carisbrook Police Lockup, originally known as the Loddon Punt, was opened in 1851. At that time it was part of the Castlemaine Police District. Standing in the park beside Bucknall Street it is the town's one significant historic building. It was originally built on the police paddock adjacent to the primary school and moved to its present site in 1886. The walls are made of interlocking horizontally-laid logs. The shingle roof has been replaced with corrugated iron. Built in 1886, this Victorian classical building was once the site of Reid's New York Bakery. The verandah was added 10 years later. The building boast a grand facade, Edwardian balcony, hand-painted ceiling and grand entrance arch. It features hand painted murals, leadlight windows, and an outstanding timber staircase. The former coffee palace is part of the temperance movement of the 19th century and was one of the last in Victoria. A British statesman and author. In a ministerial career stretching almost 30 years, he was twice Secretary of State for Scotland under William Ewart Gladstone and the Earl of Rosebery. He broke with Gladstone over the 1886 Irish Home Rule Bill, but after modifications were made to the bill he re-joined the Liberal Party shortly afterwards. Also a writer and historian, Trevelyan published The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay, his maternal uncle, in 1876. Limestone deposits in the Coimadai area 10 kilometers north of Ballarat were first worked in the 1850s. The area was quarried for limestone for many years by various people and companies. The surveyor's name who produced this plan is inscribed on the map and below this is the name P. L. Alkemade, who presumably paid for the map to be produced. In 1886 Petrus Alkemade in partnership with Matthew Egan established the Alkemade Hydraulic Lime and Cement Company. The Alkemade family were involved in the limestone industry over several generations at Coimadai.Single page map showing part of the Limestone reserve near Coimadai in the Parish of Merrimu. This Bible was owned by John Glasgow, a Wangoom farmer. His father, Robert, settled in Blackwood Hill near Wangoom in the 1850s. John Glasgow was a celebrated cheesemaker who won many prizes locally and overseas and a Warrnambool Shire Councillor from 1880 to 1886 and from 1892 to 1906. He was a Sunday School teacher at the Wangoom Presbyterian Church for 50 years and an Elder for 42 years. The book contains the names and birth dates of the extended Glasgow family and the names include Linnett, Glasgow, Coulstock and Anderson.This Bible is of considerable interest because of its connection to the John Glasgow and other members of his family. This is a leather-covered book with gold lettering on the spine. The cover overlaps the pages for extra protection. The pages are gilt-edged. One page has come apart from the binding and several other pages are partly detached from the spine. All the inscriptions are hand-written in black ink. One is a religious verse which has been pasted on to the inside of the front cover and on another page are listed the names and birth dates of 18 members of the Glasgow extended family. Arthur Ernest Albert Dawson entered Ballarat College 4 August 1886. The 1887 Ballarat College Sports program lists Arthur's name against Hurdles, Flat Race, and High Jump. Unfortunately the medal is undated. The intriguing inscription 'Twice Second' may refer to Arthur's competition for the College Cup, a highly valued Athletics Prize. The school does not hold sufficient records from this era to confirm any further details. The medal was donated to the school by Arthur's great-nephew, Ken Dawson, in 2019. The medal has social significance. It reveals the very high value placed on sports involvement at the school from its earliest beginnings. In 1884 the Ballarat School of Mines Council reserved a three acre site on a spur of the White horse Ranges known as Mount Pleasant. The Vice-President of the Ballarat School of Mines, James Oddie undertook at his own expense (said to be 4,000 pounds) to erect and equip the observatory. By 1886 seven rooms, a workshop and a cottage had been erected. The first large telescope built in Australia, the Baker Telescope, opened 1888. In 1913 the Council of the Ballarat School of Mines handed over the Observatory to the Ballarat East Town Council. A number of images as depicted in a newspaper. Around the same time, new cryogenic air separation processes, based on work undertaken by Carl von Linde and others, replaced the barium oxide process. James Oldham (1840-1908) emigrated from Newark-on-Trent and went to Ballarat where he took up a teaching position at Mount Pleasant in 1860. He was appointed head teacher of the Wesleyan Lydiard Street School in 1864. In 1886, after other appointments he became Head teacher at the Dana Street Primary School No. 33. He married Rebecca Gundry, and had twelve children. He founded the School of Design at the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute in 1870, and taught there as the Master until 1885. The Melbourne Beefsteak Club, Australia’s oldest food society, was founded in May 1886. Members were from business, professional and academic circles. The Club had some arcane rituals, with Masters and Writers of the Records. This letter from The Recorder is addressed to Brother Boyd and includes a list of 26 members and lists of past Writers of the Records and Masters from 1964-1966, and list of Writers of the Records and Masters for the next two years 1967-1968. Jubilee Reunion 12/12/1936 School No. 2778 established 1886 at first using a Recreation Hall in Albany Crescent near the corner of Windsor Crescent, Surrey Hills. Surrey Hills was first subdivided into urban blocks in 1883 when the train line to Lilydale was opened. Previously the children of local farmers walked to Balwyn school or to a small school in St. Brigids Church which was on the northeast corner of the present Riversdale Road, and Warrigal Road Church. Information provided on donation suggests that it was worn by Jean's mother, Lottie Richmond Bryan (1873-1959), on her marriage to Ernest Mole (1863-1929) in Daylesford on 27 May 1908. However, the style of the dress indicates an earlier date, circa 1878. It is possible that the dress was in fact worn by Jean's grandmother, Jane Crowe McNeil (1850-1933), who married James Bryan (1838-1886) in Daylesford on 9 February 1870.Beige taffeta silk dress with fine black woven stripe. The Little Wonder Store was built in 1883 from materials of the demolished Maddingley School. It was located on the corner of Grant Street and Labilliere Street. In 1886 James Alford obtained a licence to conduct the Railway Hotel and General Store there. A second storey was added later and the building continued to operate as the Railway Hotel. It was destroyed by fire in 1998. The photo also shows the covered wagon of a travelling salesman, who were known as ‘hawkers’, who were significant in the supply of goods and news to outlying towns and districts before the development of road and rail networks. Housed in the Jeremeas Family Album which contains photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by the photographers Stevenson and McNicoll. The photo shows a single-storey building of bluestone and brick with two signs on the front and side, the front sign reading “THE LITTLE WONDER” and the side sign “GENERAL STORE”. Above the door is a sign with the name ‘James Alford’. The windows display the merchandise of the store. Outside the store is a travelling salesman’s cart pulled by two horses.
