Poster, Dugout Night
Dugout Night is an annual event where Legatees gather and enjoy the company of fellow Legatees ("comradeship"), usually in April, close to Anzac Day. A dugout in wartime provides protection for soldiers from small arms fire, artillery bombardment and attack from the air. The sign could have been made to publicise Dugout night or most likely as a caption for photographs of the event displayed at Legacy House.Legatees supported each other by coming together for various events throughout the year. Dugout night was an annual gathering where Legatees could socialise together.White A4 poster for Dugout night. In black ink, 'Dugout Night / April 16th / Until the battery ran out ..........' Album - Scrapbook, Kew Bowling Club Memorabilia Album 2 (1979-2009), 1979-2009
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Nixon NV 1980, The History of the Kew Bowling Club 1880-1980. Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Memorabilia Album 2, 1979/80-, 1998, 2008-9; compiled by David Pitt, 2009. The damaged building in the photograph is the former Diggers Rest Hotel which was built in on that site in 1854 It was a popular place during the 1970s Sunbury Pop Festivals as it was the closest hotel to the Pop Festival site. It was partly destroyed by a suspicious fire on 30th October 2008, which left the walls and chimney intact but the roof caved in. Since then there have been moves by the local community to either rebuild and reopen the venue or to demolish it.The Diggers Rest has been one of the few early surviving hotels that were built along the former Mount Alexander Road, now Calder Highway, during the 1850s gold rush years. This a non-digital coloured photograph of a double storey hotel building, which has been damaged by fire. The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, August 2008
A man and two women surround the case of the extinct Tasmanian Thylacine at the Burke Museum. They have been identified as Tim Flannery, Linda Peacock and Pam Magennis. Tim Flannery was an orator at the Kerferd Oration and spoke on "The Climate Change Challenge".This photograph is significant both socially and historically. The Kerferd Oration is held every year and speaks on topics that both challenges and encourages members of the community. In 2008 the speaker was Tim Flannery pictured in this photograph. Flannery spoke on the issue of climate change, and how we can better manage the earth and her resources. This makes this photograph particularly interesting as the Tasmanian Thylacine is extinct because of the acts of man (hunting and introduction of foreign species), this photograph therefore sends a message about climate change and subsequent extinction, which makes it a significant item to the community of Beechworth and to the Burke Museum.Coloured rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper.Reverse: 6854burke museum, beechworth, 2008, event, thylacine, taxidermy, late 2000s fashion, museum display, recreation, arts, community, 2008 kerferd oration, the climate change challenge, extinction -

Melbourne Legacy
Photograph - Photo, tree planting, Legacy Lone Pines, 2008
A letter from Mrs Alwyn Drysdale on behalf of her husband Bob, to accompany photos of pine trees planted by him over time in various towns and schools. The trees had been organised by Legacy as part of their Lone Pine programme and he wanted to provide an update of their growth. Since the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. See the Lone Pine brochure at 00593. These trees were planted in the early 2000s. Melbourne Legacy's Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. Presentations are made to schools, ex-service organisations and interested bodies by Legacy Clubs in the hope that they will be cherished as a symbol of nationhood and of its just pride, devotion, courage, selflessness and sense of service to others.A record of tree planting of Lone Pine trees and their progress.Colour photo x 10 of pine trees and a letter.00746.1 Letter to Carmel at Legacy from Mrs Alwyn Drysdale of Kyabram. 00746.2 Kyabram Secondary College.
