Dugout Night is an annual event where Legatees gather and enjoy the company of fellow Legatees ("comradeship"), usually in April, close to Anzac Day. A dugout in wartime provides protection for soldiers from small arms fire, artillery bombardment and attack from the air. The sign could have been made to publicise Dugout night or most likely as a caption for photographs of the event displayed at Legacy House.Legatees supported each other by coming together for various events throughout the year. Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The damaged building in the photograph is the former Diggers Rest Hotel which was built in on that site in 1854 It was a popular place during the 1970s Sunbury Pop Festivals as it was the closest hotel to the Pop Festival site. It was partly destroyed by a suspicious fire on 30th October 2008, which left the walls and chimney intact but the roof caved in. Since then there have been moves by the local community to either rebuild and reopen the venue or to demolish it.The Diggers Rest has been one of the few early surviving hotels that were built along the former Mount Alexander Road, now Calder Highway, during the 1850s gold rush years.This a non-digital coloured photograph of a double storey hotel building, which has been damaged by fire. A man and two women surround the case of the extinct Tasmanian Thylacine at the Burke Museum. They have been identified as Tim Flannery, Linda Peacock and Pam Magennis. Tim Flannery was an orator at the Kerferd Oration and spoke on "The Climate Change Challenge".This photograph is significant both socially and historically. The Kerferd Oration is held every year and speaks on topics that both challenges and encourages members of the community. In 2008 the speaker was Tim Flannery pictured in this photograph. Flannery spoke on the issue of climate change, and how we can better manage the earth and her resources. A letter from Mrs Alwyn Drysdale on behalf of her husband Bob, to accompany photos of pine trees planted by him over time in various towns and schools. The trees had been organised by Legacy as part of their Lone Pine programme and he wanted to provide an update of their growth. Since the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. See the Lone Pine brochure at 00593. These trees were planted in the early 2000s. Melbourne Legacy's Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today.
