"Two hundred men of the Holy Name Society made a striking spectacle on March 26 when they marched through the streets of Daylesford to the Town Hall for a Communion breakfast, after Mass at St. Peter's Church, which concluded a tridium for the men of the parish, conducted by Rev. Father Whelan, P.P. There were many "New Australians" present. Among the visitors present were Mr. C. Condon, Mr. F. Frawley and Mr. Hooper, of the Melbourne Diocesan Union executive of the IIolv Name Society, and also eight members of the North Melbourne branch, beaded by their president, Mr. V. Sheahan. The president of the Daylesford branch (Mr. J. A. Gleeson) proposed the toast of "The Hierarchy and Clergy," to which Father Whelan and Father Moynihan, P.P.. responded. Mr. H. Poulson, vice-president, proposed the toast of "The Holy Name Society," and appealed for in increase in membership. Mr. C. Condon responded. The toast of "The Visitors" was proposed by Mr. H. Lilburne, who referred to the unavoidable absence of Father Day, spiritual director of the society. Mr. V. Sheahan and Mr. Hooper responded." John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Taken c1913, this photograph gives a clear indication of where significant buildings were located in relation to one another. Barbers Road is running through the picture with the guest house 'Kia-Ora' , built by George Barber in the centre. High on the skyline on the left is the 'Mountjoy' guesthouse, indicating the location of The Gap, or FiveWays. The small 'boxy' house above 'Kia-Ora' is 'Iona' built by the Paynter family who also built 'Mountjoy'. The Jeeves property 'Kalorama' is to the right of 'Iona' and this is the area you now look to from the FiveWays Lookout. The man in the photo is wearing a trilby hat so is probably a Rose Series employee - a feature in many Rose Series postcards.Black and white photograph that is a copy of Rose Series Postcard # 156. French Louis Merci is shown as J.L. Merci on the settlement map, having selected Lot 26 in the Village Settlement in 1901.It was a 5 acre Lot bordering Barbers Road and the Dray Track (now Link Road). Louis shared his hut for some time with Peter the Swede. Peter Johnston was the boyfriend of Iris Dorey, a daughter of the pioneering Dorey family. Iris ran the Quamby Cafe (now Cuckoo Restaurant) and later in life married Ted Woolrich from Woolrich Nursery. Peter was killed on active service during WW1 on May 15th 1918. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Lt-Colonel J.H.P. Eller was the second President of the Melbourne Legacy Club and followed H.E Cohen, the Foundation President. Eller's year of office was devoted chiefly to the consolidation of membership and is notable as a period when new ideas regarding the Club's future began to be entertained. The principle of "Preference to Returned Soldiers" and finding employment for them was no longer so important and it was recognised that a wider meaning might be given to the term "Legacy" by the undertaking of active work amongst the children of deceased soldiers.
