Mrs Bell and her adult children of Gulf Station, Yarra Glen. Standing Jack (John), Jemima, Andrew. Seated Mary Ann (mother of all the others), Frank (Francis), Dinah and Bill (William). Scottish settlers Agnes and William Bell were the first to lease the land where the property was established in the 1850s. This trowel was presented to John Russell, director of Orbost Butter Factory for fiftyyears and Chairman for nine years. John Russell was an early Orbost blacksmith in Orbost, and director of the Orbost Butter Factory for 50 years. He came to Orbost in c. 1890 at the invitation of another early settler, James Nixon, became a blacksmith, and later a farmer and landholder. Many of his descendants still live in the Orbost area.This item is significant because of its association with the Orbost Butter Factory as well as the connection with the Russell family, Orbost pioneers.A silver (plated?) trowel ornately decorated with engravings. The Cheltenham parish was created in 1865 by excising a portion of the parish of St Andrews Brighton. A small brick church was completed in 1867 to serve a rural community stretching from Brighton South (Moorabbin) to Mordialloc. 1867 St Matthew's Church of England was erected in Cheltenham beside the Nepean Highway near Charman Road. Edward and MaryAnn Rowley were pioneer settlers at Lake Bolac, taking up land in 1862. Their children were Sarah, Elizabeth, Maryanne, Deborah, Emily, Ellen, Eliza, Emma, Martha and Edward. The change-over station for stage coaches, including Cobb and C., and paddocks for resting horses, were on their property. The farm was later bought by J.T. Murray. This item comes from the estate of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie and contains a clear photograph of their family home, Aroona (19 Princess Street, Warrnambool). Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool. This calendar is of interest as it contains a photograph of Aroona, the early 20th century residence of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie. The photograph is at least 54 years old and so has historic significance, especially for local researchers.This is a piece of lightweight cream-coloured cardboard with a calendar for the year 1954 printed in blue on the bottom half of the sheet and some blue decorative patterns around the calendar. The top half of the sheet has a black and white photograph of a house inserted in slots with a blue border around the photograph. St Katherine's Church St Helena was built by Major Anthony Beale pioneer settler of the area, and named after his wife. The original church was damaged by fire in February 1957 and rebuilt shortly after. The accompanying article describes the "quaint old village of Greensborough" and an excursion to the churchyard at St Helena. Refer to article by Eileen Fortescue in The Argus Newspaper Saturday 19/3/1932 Page 8.These photos are significant as they were taken before the fire and there are few photographs of the original church. These nails were made for Walter John Mundy (1868-1944). Often imported nails made for the softer English and North American timbers bent when hammered against the harder colonial woods and so The Mundy family were farmers / settlers in the Snowy River area since c. 1880s. The original Mundy family moved to a land "selection" at Betebolong in the early 1880's from Buchan. It's only over the past century or so that the mass-produced nail has become an inexpensive and common way to join materials. These three iron nails were hand made by an early Orbost settler or blacksmith in the 1880's, using iron, forge and anvil. They are examples of the types of nails used in the 19th century. A rectangular, wooden(athel pine?) board with three hand-made nails glued in fan design to top left corner of section of floorboard. There is a short length of yellow cord attached for hanging. In the late 1960s St. Mary's Anglican Church was dismantled from its Oaklands Road site and rebuilt on land in Bulla township adjacent to the old shire offices. It was moved because of the interference it would create for aircraft landing in the new Melbourne Airport at Tullamarine. Jeannie Green from Wandin married Willie Richardson (son of the original settler Jabez Richardson) in 1898. They built a home in the Kalorama Valley and named it "Mt Calvin". Jeanie had three children - Reuben born 1890, William born 1901 and Jean born 1910. Jeanie suffered ill health and required assistance with cooking and cleaning. In the 1852 Josiah Holloway, a developer, purchased 625 acres from the squatters Richard and John King and sectioned '2 acre allotments' south of Henry Dendy's Brighton Survey along the Arthur's Seat Road ( later Nepean Highway) for sale @ £10 It became known as The Two Acre Village as settlers took up the allotments and established market gardens, general stores, butchers, blacksmiths, post office and 2 hotels. Charles Whorral opened The Cheltenham Inn and it became so popular as a meeting place that the area was called Cheltenham. The early settlers, who were predominantly English and Scottish immigrants initially leased their allotments and, because the sandy soil was so fertile, they were soon able to purchase the land and increase their acreage. Circa 1870, “Estey”, American-made, small Harmonium, (commonly known as a Gospel Organ). Initially purchased by Mr John Box, This example folds up into a small wooden case. It was often borrowed and could frequently be seen on the roadside, waiting to be picked up by horse and cart for delivery to a place of worship, often a local hall or private home. This organ was donated to the Baptist Church in the 1920s, from the estate of John Box, and was in constant use. This 'Estey' harmonium belonged to the local Bentleigh Baptist Church, Vickery Street, Bentleigh. It was often borrowed for delivery to a place of worship, often a local hall. There was also a “Methodist Mission to Chinese”, located in Lydia Street, Bentleigh, where the Methodist religion was taught to those interested Chinese. Ada Healey was for 20 years a volunteer and organizer at the Orbost Slab Hut (Orbost Information Centre).
