Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GETTING THE GOLD, c1860
Diggers & Mining. Getting the Gold. Slide: In 1860, the Victorian Government began the construction of Reservoirs on some important gold fields. In that year, 29 small reservoirs were built (see next map); thereafter, more were constructed (there were 38 of them in 1868). These reservoirs supplied water to small gold fields towns, and to the gold mines in and near them. But pipes were laid to stand-pipes on nearby diggings (remember that by this time the number of independent diggers was declining rapidly) Markings: 71 994.LIF:4. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GETTING THE GOLD, c1850s
Diggers & Mining. Getting the Gold. Slide: On some fields, but notably at Ballarat and Daylesford, the diggers soon began building water races from streams and springs, and running the race water into small reservoirs near their claims. (Water races, as we have seen, were also constructed all over the Ovens field for sluicing purposes.) Later in the gold decade, the building of water races went on space - chiefly by large co-operative groups of diggers engaged in small scale mining operations. Markings: 69 994.LIF:4. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE GOLD LICENCE, c1850s
Diggers & Mining. The gold licence. The Government Camp. The licence system aroused much hostility among the diggers. They objected to the principle of the fee-a tax on their labour levied by a government in which they were not represented. They objected to the incidence of the tax, which bore equally on the fortunate diggers who could afford it, and the large number of unfortunate diggers who could not. But the most objectionable feature of the licence system was the method by which, on most fields, it was generally enforced. Markings: 31 994.LIF. 4. Used as a teaching aid. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. GOLD, c1881
Diggers & Mining. Gold. The growing trade union movement all over Australia took the lead in an anti-Chinese agitation. By 1881, all the Australian colonies except Tasmania (where few Chinese had ever gone) and Western Australia had re-introduced fairly uniform laws restricting Chinese immigration. In 1866, Western Australia fell into line. The only part of Australia where the Chinese continued to come in any numbers was the Northern Territory (then under South Australian control) . . . Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE DIGGING - THE DIGGERS, c1800s
Diggers & Mining. The Digging - The Diggers. Slide: Contemporary writers stress two characteristics of the diggers- (1) They were sturdily self-reliant and independent, conscious of their rights as men, and willing to act together to maintain them. Their work made them so; most of them of the first and last time in their lives were working, not for a master, but for themselves. ''Quiet acceptance of a government in which they were not represented could not be expected of such men, particularly if they became aware of government only through irritation and injustice.'' Diggers & Mining. The Digging - The Diggers. Slide: With regard to the statements of the universal unchecked prevalence of crime and disorder on the workings detailed with such effrontery and recklessness in the profligate public prints of this colony itself, or greedily retailed and commented upon for evident purposes in the New South Wales press, all I can say is that they are not true. . . Viewing the position and character of the not inconsiderable number of persons frequenting the diggings, a far greater amount of crime might prevail without the Government of the colony . . .
