These specifications were for the Bank of Australasia building on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. The two-storey stone Regency building was built by Roberts & Co. in 1859 and it still stands today, a hundred and sixty years later. Above the doorway, the words "BANK OF AUSTRALASIA" were etched into the stone. In 1856 Roberts & Co. built the Warrnambool Post Office on Timor Street, and in 1858 purchased land on Timor Street. This violin was played by VX30301 Dvr Roy Arnel, as a member of the Australian Imperial Force Concert Party, in the Changi POW camp, Singapore from 1942-1945. It is claimed that the violin, in its case was thrown over the wall by a Chinese civilian. Roy Arnel, a South African by birth enlisted on 7 June 1940 at Royal Park, Melbourne and served with 2 AASC Company as a driver. He was captured by the Japanese Imperial Army at the fall of Singapore in February 1942. There was more than one concert party in Changi as indicated on the rear of the violin. The details of the Dutch, British and American Concert Parties scratched in to the varnish. There are the some well known names scratched into the violin including: The English author and cartoonist, Ronald Searle; Australian entertainer, Frank Rich; and Australian Author, Russell Braddon. Mr Arnel died in 1982 and the violin was presented to Melbourne Legacy for preservation, safe keeping and display. Further research found that one of the AIF comedians, Harry Smith, had a catch phrase, 'You'll never get off the Island' which became almost the watchword of the prisoners throughout the captivity. This photograph depicts the visit of Sir Rohan Delacombe and Lady Delacombe (on right) to Beechworth in 1965. Also present are Shire Secretary Graham Gray and Mrs Gray (left), and Shire President J McCauley and Mrs McCauley, centre. His Excellency Sir Rohan Delacombe (1906–1991) was appointed Governor of Victoria on 8 May 1963 and served until 1974, when he was replaced by the first Australian-born governor, Sir Henry Winneke. Born on 25 October 1906 at St Julians, Malta, Sir Rohan was the second child and only son of Addis Delacombe, a British army pay officer, and his wife Emma Louise Mary, née Leland. The Delacombe family seat was Shrewton Manor, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, and several generations of Delacombes had served in the armed forces. Sir Rohan took up his role in Australia following long and distinguished military and diplomatic career. He is reported to have taken great interest in local events and politics, and at the time this image was taken, he and Lady Delacombe made several appearances as guests of local government representatives at centres around Victoria. This photograph is historically significant for its record of the visit of Sir Rohan and Lady Delacombe at Beechworth in 1965. This photograph shows men working in the gravel pit at Newmerella just outside Orbost. Not long after this photograph was taken an accidental explosion killed three workers. In the newspaper, The Hobart Mercury on Saturday March 1914, There was this report: "EXPLOSION OF BLASTING CHARGE. THREE MEN KILLED. MELBOURNE, March 13 A fatal accident occurred this after- noon on the railway construction works at Hagen's Cutting, about two miles from Orbost, three men being killed. The victims were John Carroll, contractor, his son, Peter Carroll, and John Sullivan, a navvy. The gang had just finished work, and the three stayed behind to draw a blasting charge, which had missed fire yesterday. J. Carroll was using a pick, and it is presumed that the tool struck a percussion cap, and fired the charge. He and Sullivan were killed instantly, Carroll being literally blown to pieces. Fragments of his body and garments were recovered from the surrounding bush, and the main portion of the trunk, with leg attached, was hurled a distance of 200 yards. Peter Car roll was terribly- injured, and he died before medical aid arrived. ' This is a pictorial record of construction workers associated with the Orbost - Bairnsdale railway. This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. He died at Ferny Hill, near Research, Eltham in 1878 aged 74 years and was buried at Melbourne General Cemetery. G&S marking could be Grove & Stark, Longton, England (1871-1884). In the 19th century, J. & G. Meakin ,1851 based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, was known for the vast quantities of cheap ironstone china it produced for the domestic English market and for export to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. Grove & Stark were taken over by Meakin early 20thC The Mark could also be Gibson & Sons (Ltd), were notably manufacturers of earthenware Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. Founded around 1885 and traded until the mid 1970's. They were previously Gibson, Sudlow & Co. Manufactured between 1885 to 1905. Small earthen-ware, black-glazed tea-pot. 8 sided. The body of the tea-pot is decorated with hand-painted gold flowers and raised cream flowers. The lid is also hand -painted with green leaves and flowers. This floral pattern is named "Garland" The lid is not of the same pattern as the base. The spout was broken when brush tailed possum entered Cottage via chimney 27/4/2014. "Two hundred men of the Holy Name Society made a striking spectacle on March 26 when they marched through the streets of Daylesford to the Town Hall for a Communion breakfast, after Mass at St. Peter's Church, which concluded a tridium for the men of the parish, conducted by Rev. Father Whelan, P.P. There were many "New Australians" present. Among the visitors present were Mr. C. Condon, Mr. F. Frawley and Mr. Hooper, of the Melbourne Diocesan Union executive of the IIolv Name Society, and also eight members of the North Melbourne branch, beaded by their president, Mr. V. Sheahan. The president of the Daylesford branch (Mr. J. A. Gleeson) proposed the toast of "The Hierarchy and Clergy," to which Father Whelan and Father Moynihan, P.P.. responded. Mr. H. Newspaper report on the issue of the disposal of former SEC Bendigo trams following the closure of the system. The Adelaide-based tramway museum (AETM) was allocated Birney No. 29 by the SEC and agreed to by the Minister for Fuel and Power Mr Balfour. When they tried to collect it, the loading was stopped, with the agreement of the City of Bendigo, quoting Mayor Cr J P Pearce. The newspaper gives the background to the issue of the retention by Bendigo of the former SEC fleet. Following this action, no other tramcars that had been allocated at the time left Bendigo. In 1975, the Government paid the Bendigo Trust to reconstruct a Birney that had been scrapped before the closure of the Bendigo system which was given to the AETM. It is identified as the home of J B Aird. The 2 women on the left are not identified. On the right are Mr & Mrs P Falconer and son Ron. Mrs Falconer was nee Aird. Research: 1917 electoral roll lists James Bromich Aird (optician), Sarah Ann Aird (HD) and Hilda Lillian Aird (tailoress) at 'Stratford', Croydon Road, Surrey Hills. Earlier electoral roll lists him in Ringwood and later ones at Wandin North. James Bromich Aird (1854-1938) and Sarah Ann Edwards (1858-1930) had 7 children. Emily Victoria Aird (1884-1957) and Hilda Lillian Aird were 2 of their daughters. Emily married Patrick Henry Falconer (1879-1964). Their son Ronald Keith Falconer (1908-1983) was born and died in Surrey Hills. James and Sarah Aird are buried in Box Hill Cemetery. Given the collecting focus adopted by Jocelyn Hall it can be assumed that this was taken at 'Stratford' in Croydon Road, Surrey Hills. "The Mechanics’ Institute hall (demolished) and the library played a central role in the story of Melton social life, and in the development of its learning, culture, entertainment, celebration, commemoration and many community groups. The building on the site today - with the Court House the only remaining early community or public building remaining in High Street - is a tribute to the energy and talents of the very small Melton community over many years. Its substantial size, brick materials, and the evident use of an architect in its design, sets it apart from most other simple weatherboard Mechanics’ Institutes that were built in smaller country towns in Victoria. The financing and upkeep of this building, which was community-owned until 1982, and built on land purchased by the community rather than granted by Government, itself contributed to the coming together of the Melton community in decision making and fundraising. Although the original hall is demolished, the 1983 Melton Community Hall adjacent is partly its successor, demolition of the Institute hall having been predicated on its construction. Was attached to a wall near reception but was removed to storage in approx.. 2000 - 2002. The bell has strong associations with the Victorian Railways Era reflecting the service and ethos of Railways with its uniformed Porters welcoming and on duty as Night Porter and day for all guests needs. (Especially lost keys) assistance with luggage, room service and co-ordinating transit and transport with Railways buses and services. A personal recollection is of Joseph the Night Porter welcoming and assisting when as a family with four sleeping children we would arrive after midnight to the Chalet where rooms would be ready, beds turned down and all unpacking of the car supervised by Joseph. Items such as the hall porter bell, the many signs providing information to the guests, the wall clock, barometer and dinner bell point to the Chalet being a well-run social institution with a pleasant environment for rest, recreation and congenial company." A newspaper article about the War Widows Creche in Collins St Melbourne from 29 July 1947. An article about the creche set up by the War Widows Guild to help its members to work or retrain. The War Widows Guild was established by Mrs J M Vasey. She was the wife of Major-General Vasey, during the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. This reproduction on display board may have been for an exhibition of Guild memorabilia at some time. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this board, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. An article showing more than 1500 people met to demand higher compensation for the loss of their husbands who had died for their country. Mrs J M Vasey received an ovation for her address to the meeting. Costa’s Wine Cafe was once one of the best known landmarks in Wodonga. It was near the corner of High Street and Lawrence, across the road from where the water tower was later built. Mr. Bernardo Costa came to Australia from Switzerland, arriving in Sydney in 1857. In 1882 he moved to Wodonga and conducted his boot sale and repair business He applied for a Wine License in December 1886. In 1908 B Costa advertised that he had rebuilt his premises, which “affords the best and most comfortable accommodation to the travelling public”. For a while it was known as Wodonga Swiss Wine Café. After Bernardo’s death in 1915 the wine cafe and accommodation at the rear was run by his three daughters, Annie, Angela and Gertrude. In 1941 the Misses Costa sold their business and freehold to Mrs. J Adams who died just six years later. It was then run by her son Pat Adams, and after his demise his wife ran the business. Frank Walsh was running it as Walsh’s Wine Café by 1951. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 22 April 1988. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos include Legatees lining up to greet the official party, which included President Alf Argent and the Governor of Victoria, Dr J Davis McCaughey, AC (see 01784). Also the Governor inspecting a group of cadets. Many Legatees attend and one photo shows Legatee Tom Robinson with the school children. The event included a fly past of 4 aircraft and speeches by the president, the Governor and two school children (see 01785). A bugler in red uniform performed (see 01787). There was a boys choir and girls choir either side of the Shrine steps. Other school children sat on the steps with wreaths to be laid in the inner sanctuary (see 01788). Two Junior Legatees laid wreaths at the Cenotaph on behalf of Junior Legatees (see 01789). The school ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV and Radio for many years. Great celebrations took place in Albury, NSW for the celebration of the Centenary of the Hume and Hovell expedition. The Hume and Hovell journey of discovery to Port Phillip took place during 1824-1825. On November 20, 1824, they successfully crossed the Murray River not far from Albury and proceeded on a route to Port Phillip. To celebrate the Centenary of this crossing, the city of Albury held a series of activities during the week of Sunday 16th November to Saturday 22nd November 1924. As part of these celebrations the Albury Race Club held a special race meeting conducted on Thursday 20th and Saturday 22nd November 1924. This badge was produced as a memorabilia for that meeting. Prize money over the two day meeting totalled over £3,000. The star events were the Centenary Cup of I mile and 3 furlongs with a prize of £1000 (one thousand pounds) and a Gold Cup valued at one hundred guineas, donated by Mrs. Jas. Mitchell of Tabletop, and the John Campbell Handicap of one mile carrying $500 and trophy valued at 50 guineas donated by the chairman of the Club, Mr. J. Campbell. A gold whip donated by Mr. Norman Crow was presented to the jockey riding the Cup winner. This item is significant because it is an example of memorabilia produced for the centenary celebrations for the Hume and Hovell Expedition.An enamelled fob medallion featuring a central image with a tree at the top and text. Dr James Taverney set up practice in Wodonga on Monday 19th August 1946. His practice was initially located in rooms at the residence of Mr J. F. Turner in Beechworth Road. In the following years, Dr Taverney purchased a large part of the garden from the Turner family and built this two-storey building where he went into practice with Dr Schlink. The building contained the surgery and a residence. It has features of Art Deco architecture. The exterior consists of painted brick with a curved parapet that conceals the roof. The windows are metal framed and the door frames are timber. The verandahs feature wrought iron balustrading and posts. There is also an upper balcony. Dr Taverney - known to many as Dr Tav - was a loyal medical practitioner in Wodonga for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was also a member of the committee which helped to establish the Wodonga District Hospital which opened with 60 beds in 1954. Other doctors who practised from this site included Dr Fitzpatrick, Dr Leberne and Dr Robinson. In about 1991 the building was purchased by a group of local businessmen led by Tom Christiansen who named it Gundowring House after his hometown. A flooring clamp (or cramp) is used for holding tongue and groove floorboards in place whilst laying a new floor. The ratchet handle is used to apply horizontal pressure to hold boards firmly in place until they are secured. “The General and Commercial Directory of the Borough of Birmingham, and six miles round; including Wolverhampton, Bilston, Walsall, West Bromwich” published in 1858 lists William Bissell as an ironmonger in Union Street, Wolverhampton. In the catalogue for the 1862 London Exhibition, three items manufactured by William Bissell were listed, including:- “BISSELL'S PATENT FLOORING CRAMP. The force of this cramp is fully equal to 1 ton. It is adapted to joists from 2 to 4 in. and is the most expeditious and easy in working of any cramp in use.” In the 1864 edition of “Williams's Manufacturers' Directory, for London and Principal Market Towns in England”, page 445, in listings for Wolverhampton, W Bissell is listed as a Patentee of flooring cramps, lifting jacks and proprietor of mortise locks; mortising machines, bench and vertical saw-frames". By 1871 the business was operating as Messrs. J. G. Bissell and Co. and the trademark on this item in our Collection was phased out. This information assists in allocating the provenance of this item to the late 1860s.This item is significant because it is representative of housing construction tools used in the Wodonga District which have evolved into present day tools.A cast iron clamp used to install tongue and groove floorboards. This ledger is a record of the sales of John Stewart from 1890 to 1905 in the districts of Warrnambool, Garvoc, Hamilton and Horsham. John Stewart was a printer and store keeper in Warrnambool from 1890 to 1895. He was also connected to several hotels in the district- the Pieter Both Hotel in Warrnambool in Raglan Parade, ( his wife was the Licensee in 1897), the Yallock Inn in Garvoc ( his wife was the licensee 1899), and hotels in Hamilton and Horsham.The Ledger is of some interest as it contains the names of many local people at the end of the 19th Century. It is a handy research tool. This ledger has 542 pages. It has a hard cover with a dark green cloth cover with leather binding on the spine and corners of the cover. There is a red label on the spine with gold printing and patterning. The inside of the cover has a mottled pattern. There is an alphabetical index at the front. The pages have red ruled lines and hand written entries in ink.
