Commemorative Mug (Melkbeker)
In 1898, when Princess Wilhelmina attained her majority, she succeeded her Mother, Queen Emma, who had been Regent for 10 years. Wilhelmina reigned for 50 years until her abdication in favour of her daughter Juliana in 1948.The House of Orange is one of the most popular monarchies in Western democracies. Widespread celebrations accompanied the Abdication/Accession. A souvenir pottery mug handed out to school children in Amsterdam in 1948 to commemorate the abdication of Queen Wilhelmina and the accession to the throne of Queen Juliana. This kind of mug (without a handle) was typically used by children to drink their milk. It is illustrated with the initials of the two Queens surrounded by oranges (for the House of Orange). Blue banners link the bunches of oranges. There is also a depiction of the famous steeple of the Wester Church, the Amsterdam coat of Arms, a ship, a bridge and a typical canal house.Above the W: "Dankbaar voor het verleden" (Grateful for the past) 1898-1948. Above the J: "Vol vertrouwen in de toekomst" (Full of confidence in the future) 1948 -

Set, Tongue Depressor
General anaesthesia relaxes muscles around the airway which can result in the airway becoming obstructed. Holding the jaw open or keeping the tongue out of the way were crucial. Often, brutal devices were used to open the jaw or pull the tongue forward to clear the airway.Set of four chrome plated metal tongue depressors of different sizes. Each depressor has been engraved with a number (1 - 4). Numbers 2 - 4 also have a metal tube that could be used to administer anaesthesia simultaneously. Numbers 2 - 3 also have cross-hatched grooves in the depressor and all have finger grips engraved into the handles.boyle-davis, airway management -

Equipment - Cannula, Transfusion
Doctors trained in blood transfusion were essential to the development of Forward Resuscitation Teams during World War I. In 1918, Dr Alan Holmes a Court and his colleagues established a resuscitation team and, following their remarkable success at the battle of Hamel on July 4, teams were permanently established at each of the five Australian divisions. Each team consisted of one doctor trained in surgery, blood transfusion and resuscitation, another doctor trained in anaesthesia, resuscitation and blood donor classification, and four other assisting staff. This team moved out to the wounded, rather than waiting for them to be stretchered back. They provided on-the-spot, life-saving resuscitation. The wounded were then transported back to the Casualty Clearing Station or Regimental Aid Post for further treatment.A selection of metal cannula of various designs and sizes.blood, transfusion, intravenous, cannula -

Instrument - Scarificator
Scarifiers were traditionally used for blood letting, and in folk medicine for the practice of cupping. Spring loaded knives cut the skin, then a warmed metal or glass cup is placed over the cuts. As the air inside the cup cools, it creates a vacuum drawing out the "bad" blood. The process is also related to the ancient medical theory of "humors". This theory dates back to the Hippocratic tradition and persisted through to the mid-19th Century. According to this theory, the body had four "humors", "airs" or "elements" which neeed to be kept in balance. Any imbalance could cause illness and this was often explained in terms of excess fluids. One prescribed treatment was to remove the excess blood which would restore the balance.Square, solid brass object with lever to release blades underneath.Etched on side: Mundy / Londonmetal, blades, bloodletting -

Maribyrnong Cordite Wagon
Cordite Wagon - 18½-inch (460mm) gauge wagons came from the Commonwealth Explosives factory at Maribyrnong in Melbourne’s western suburbs. Both have gun-metal wheels, as avoiding sparks was understandably a priority in an explosives factory. Both wagons also have water tanks to drip water on the wheels as an added precaution. Cordite, an explosive used in artillery, was manufactured and pressed into thin sheets, which still contained a quantity of acetone solvent from the manufacturing process. The sheets of cordite were laid in racks of perforated trays in the cordite wagons, which were hand-pushed to the cordite drying-house where the trucks were coupled together in rakes and warm air was blown through them. The acetone, being very volatile, was evaporated out of the cordite and recovered to be re-used in the manufacturing process. Horse team , Cocks Pioneer Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold & Tin Mine Company was formed in 1899. The company's first power station, located at the eastern end of the valley began operating with its 340 Kilowatt steam-powered generator. By 1909, from 2,500,000 cubic yards worked, reported recovery was 17 284 ounces of gold and 224 tons of tin ore. By 1909, Cocks Pioneer’s power plant had become inadequate and uneconomical. The barge was floated downstream about a mile, but lost time caused the operations to cease. Following testing, a new mine was established by diverting Reid's Creek at a cost of £25,000. Settling dams were built, one of which held 1,935,900 cubic feet. Sold earth banks, built against a wall of stringy bark saplings constructed and laced with vertical props, were built. In 1914, the company was reformed as Cock’s Pioneer Gold and Tin Mines NL, another power station was constructed at the western end of the township, near the junction of Clear and Reid's Creeks. From 6,800,000 cubic yards of material processed, the returns were 64,397 ounces of gold and 855 ton of tin. Cocks Pioneer mine then moved the barge downs stream and continued sluicing. In 1929 Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold and Tin Mining Company ceased operations due to a drop in values. Cock’s Pioneer Gold and Tin Mines NL carried on large-scale hydraulic sluicing operations until 1941. mining, gold, tin, sluicing, men, cocks pioneer, el dorado, eldorado, horses, gold mining, tin mining -
