Artefact, Ink well
This ink well could have been used in a household or a business office. It would have been an attractive addition to a desk or office and served in a practical way to enclose the ink needed for writing purposes. Today the ink well has been replaced by firstly the use of fountain pens and later, after 1950, the widespread use of ballpoint pens. Although it has no known local provenance this item is retained as an interesting example of an ornamental ink well from100 years ago. This is a brown rectangular-shaped metal stand elevated from the floor by four jutting side pieces. There are two upright semi-circular side metal pieces acting as protective shields. The base of the metal stand has an open fretwork pattern with a circular hole in the middle. This contains a china ink well. It is enclosed by a hinged metal lid. The protective uprights and the metal stand also have ornamental fretwork with patterns of fronds and flowers. The ink well is a little chipped.‘Rd. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph - Junior legatee outing, Somers Camp 1977, 01/1977
A photo of a smiling girl wading in the ocean. It came from an envelope with other camp photos. Junior Legatees attended Somer's Camp over summer holidays organised by Melbourne Legacy. The newspaper article on 12 January 1977 says it was a day where junior legatees were treated to sailing activities by yachtsmen of Westernport. The boys were at Somers Camp and the girls had been holidaying in the Legacy Camp at Kew. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The contents will be items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children.A record of Junior Legatee camps.Black and white photo of a girl at the beach.Handwritten on the back "Holiday Camp at Somers" in blue pen. Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Legacy House, 1956
A photo of Legacy House in the 1950s. Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government with money gifted to Legacy in memory of David H Dureau. The donation was initially used to purchase a different building at 342 Swanston St, which was sold in 1954, and 289 Swanston St was purchased. Melbourne Legacy is still using three floors of the building, with tenants on the ground floor. It was used in a newspaper article about the acquisition of the building for Legacy. It mentions the purchase price was undisclosed. It says the purchase was possible due to a generous gift of money from overseas in 1944. The building would be called the David H Dureau Memorial Building at the request of the donor. The article has a photo of Governor Sir Dallas Brooks and the Legacy President Bob Gaylard. The notation LH5 in red pen implies it was part of an early archive project by Frank Doolan.A record of what the Legacy House building looked like when it was acquired by Melbourne Legacy.Black and white photo of Legacy House around the time when it was acquired in 1956 and newspaper reprint of an article about the acquisition marked LH5.Stamped on reverse 'Please Acknowledge Australian News and Information Bureau' in purple ink. Drawing - Property Illustration, Margaret Picken, 6 Fairway Drive, Kew East, 1989
After training as a Cartographic Draftsman within the mining industry, I worked as a property illustrator for real estate firms in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne for 23 years from 1983. I initially photographed houses with a Polaroid camera and made a 'thumbnail' sketch while there. The photos were used to scale off a sketch in pencil and then that sketch was overlaid with drafting film and the 'pen and ink' completed. The pens I used were the Rotring ‘Rapidigraph’ drafting pens. The ink was also made by Rotring (German). The film was ‘Rapidraw’, polyester drafting film, double matte. It takes a very fine line and doesn’t bleed. As well as house sketches, there were often floor plans and site plans ordered. Aerial sketches were ordered when the property needed an overall view. (Margaret Picken, 2020)This drawing is one of a series created by Margaret Picken for real estate agents in Melbourne between 1983 and 2006.
