The gown has a cream silk lining. The dress is in poor condition due to the lace which is extensively torn/rotted on the bodice. Furniture - Hand embroidered fire screen, 1900-1910
This hand embroidered fire screen was embroidered by Winifred Caroline Henty Hindson (1887–1967), Elsie May Eliza Hindson (1880–1968) and Louisa (Louie) Charlotte Frances Hindson (1885–1963) three of the daughters of Alice Henty and John Hindson. Their grandfather, Francis Henty, was the youngest son of Thomas Henty, who with his family, their retainers and property moved to the Australian colonies between 1829 and 1832. In 1834, Francis’ older brother, Edward, sailed from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land to what was to become Portland in the western part of Port Phillip District [Victoria]. Francis, together with the first flock of Merino sheep [in Victoria], followed some months later. The first and second generations of the Henty family established vast pastoral properties in the Western part of the Port Phillip District. Francis Henty managed ‘Merino Downs’ near Casterton, while also living in his retirement at ‘Field Place' in Kew.The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Multicoloured silk embroidered floral composition on a black fabric background created by Louisa, Elsie and Winifred Hindson. The embroidery is held behind glass and is protected by blackened wood at the back. Nino Corda was a Geelong based textile designer who worked at various textile mills between 1957 & 2003. He travelled the world in search of the latest fashions and techniques and developed timeless designs that were much loved by Australians. These items are on rotational display at the National Wool Museum’s ‘In the Factory’ exhibition. For many years, Nino also worked as part of the Honorary Staff of the National Wool Museum. His passion for the world of textiles provided energy and knowledge to the visitors and staff of the museum. Although Nino has now retired from his honorary position and has hung up his Australian Tartan vest, these items will continue to serve the community in sharing the stories of Australian Textile design. This Suit Jacket was tailored from fabric designed by Nino while he was working at the Foster Valley Mill. Nino developed a Mastercard such as w8043, which was sent to a mill in order to produce bolts of the desired fabrics w8044. These fabrics were then given to tailors where the final product was produced, such as this Suit Jacket.Single breasted suit jack with two buttons and notched lapel. Jacket is predominantly grey with black buttons and a silver silk interior lining. Textile, Handkerchief Pink edge, C1918
Hankerchiefs have been used for centuries as a piece of cloth deemed useful for personal hygiene. They are usually kept in one's pocket but at times through history have been fluttered to attract attention or send a message. In harder times they proved to be a cheap item often used to add interest to an outfit. This item is one of five hankerchiefs which were brought back from France after WW1 by great uncles of Gloria Redman and have been passed down through her grandmother and mother. This item has significance as an item linked to a local family and World War 1 and as such has social, and historical significance. It is well provenanced and can be used to provide interest to the relating of a fairly common story whereby many soldiers brought or sent back small items such as hankerchiefs to their loved ones at home.Cream silk hankerchief with soft pink edge in blanket stitch Embroidered with cluster of flowers and leaves in each corner with embroidered mauve butterfly. Clothing - FRIEDA KAHLAND COLLECTION: BLACK SILK SATIN DRESS, 1920-30's
Black silk-satin machine stitched dress. Dropped waist with bans 3.5 cm wide across front. Pleat from neckline to dropped waist, 2.5 cm wide and fastened down by four groupings of two one cm diameter buttons, mauve in colour. Four rows of narrow pin tucks each side of centre front and one tuck one cm wide on outer side of pintucks. Six press stud fasteners concealed under left hand tuck. Fold down collar, with two silk embroidered flowers appliquéd at collar fronts. Three quarter length sleeves slit at lower edge, and trimmed with two mauve buttons and two silk flowers appliquéd at each lower edge. Clothing - HAND STITCHED GOLD SILK FAILLE VICTORIAN SKIRT, Late 1800's
Long skirt, with train in gold silk faille fabric. Fully lined. Stiffened ''cheesecloth'' type of fabric. Apart from the cream 3.5 cm wide petersham band at the waistline, the skirt is completely hand stitched. This band is possibly a later addition, as the waistline is badly damaged, but does show remnants of silk fabric as used in the lower skirt. Skirt front is plain, with one knife pleat on either side. Back of skirt is tightly pleated, with both knife, and one double box pleats. Skirt back extends into a train. A 28 cm deep frill around the hemline of contrasting, but same tone of fabric - part lighter, with a woven stripe (14 cm deep) a 1.2 cm darker with woven stripe, a 10.5 cm section with a geometric woven pattern, and a 2.5 cm striped section. It was worn again by Margaret Henty Hindson (1918-2000) at her marriage to Dougald Webster Matheson at St Paul's Church, Henty in 1944. The two piece dress has a low décolletage shaped with a collar from which two curved panels drop. The fastenings for the bodice are buttons covered with the same fabric. The bodice is completed with two full length sleeves. The full skirt is slightly flattened at the front with a long train. In contrast, the ivory silk, silk faille and satin bodice with long tails remained unaltered. The front closure of the jacket has handmade embroidered buttonholes and covered buttons. Clothing - AILEEN AND JOHN ELLISON COLLECTION: LONG TULLE THREE TIER WEDDING VEIL, 1960's
Clothing. Light cream in colour. Fine possibly silk tulle, tightly gathered at the front. Measuring 255 cms long, the veil is edged with a very fine silk binding. A shorter 78 cm long layer also tightly gathered, sits over the top. A third layer also 78 cm long is separated from the lower tiers. This Would possibly be the layer that came forward over the bride's face. It may later have been removed. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: SILK HANDKERCHIEF, 1800's
Clothing. Fine cream silk in a 8 pointed star shape, in the centre of the handkerchief - 15 cm diameter. Fine silk lace, 10 cm deep, surrounds this centrepiece. Adjoining the star shape is a one cm wide border, surrounded by 1.5 cm flowers, identical to those in the matching collar(11414.26). A Maltese Cross design in each corner brings the piece to a square shape. This joins fine lace in a flower and leaf design, with the Maltese Cross design in each corner, and at centre of each side. Three panels-one either side of front opening, and one rounded panel from side fronts, and across back. Two triangular panels - 10 cm X 4 cm at front lower edge of back circular panel. Front panels are longer than sides of back panels. All front and lower edges are finished with a 5 cm long, silver coloured, silk fringe. A 1.5 cm wide band of striped silk binds the neckline, nut is in very poor condition. This booklet was the first of a series of scientific and historical studies of Gippsland to be published by the Bairnsdale Advertiser. The author, Eric Charles Frederick Bird was Principal Fellow, Department of Geography, University of Melbourne, Australia. The Mitchell River silt jetties are an unusually long, thin landform located in the Gippsland Lakes region. They have been formed over millions of years by sediment deposition from the Mitchell River during periods of low water flow and subsequent wash-through during periods of high water flow. The long narrow banks of silt extend more than eight kilometres east into Lake King. This item is a useful reference for the silt jetties of the Mitchell River.A 32 pp book with alight green cover. Illuminated Testimonial, Rev J R Harcourt
Rev. James Harcourt (1866-1938) was the son of Rev John Harcourt. He was the first student of Queen's College to graduate at the University of Melbourne. He was a chaplain of Wesley College and a tutor at Queens College for six years. In 1909 he became Minister of Glendearg Grove Church in Malvern. Brown leather and gilt the inside is lined with watered silk on the left and a richly illuminated text on the right. The top has images of two churches and the borders are decorated with blue, yellow and red flowers. Presented to the Major The Honorable F. T. Sargood together with the V.R.A. Challenge Cup on 8 December 1876. The cup was competed for by all the volunteer corps in Victoria. The following extract is from The Argus (Melb), Sat 9 Dec 1876, page 9 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5912315 The second quarterly official inspection of the St Kilda Battery was held last night by Colonel Anderson. The gun drill was held in the orderly-room, and afterwards the corps was put through field movements in the drill around. At the termination of the inspection Colonel Anderson expressed his satisfaction at the manner in which the drill had been performed. Colonel Anderson then presented Major Sargood with the Victorian Rifle Association Challenge Cap, which had been won by the St. Kilda Battery three times. The cup has been competed for the last 12 years, and in that time the cost of the ammunition used in the contest and markers' fees amounted to about £3.000. The value of the cup is 20 guineas. An address to Major Sargood was then read by Captain Hearn. On receiving the cup Major Sargood said that he was afraid from the state of his health he would either have to retire from command of the battery, or obtain a long leave of absence. He said that six years ago he bad been presented with a sword which he wore that evening, and he was glad to see that there was no diminution of the goodwill then expressed towards him. An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. The garments date from the 1880s to the 1930s. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, and undergarments. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. The garments in the Weir Collection were donated to the Kew Historical Society by a granddaughter of Edith Weir in 2017.Long navy blue crepe fitted dress featuring long narrow sleeves. The round-necked bodice includes buttons at the neck bordered by navy blue silk embroidery.
