The original Research Store belonged to the Doneys. It was located near where the present Research shops are situated (opposite Ingram Road). Charlie Doney is shown in front of the store. His wife Blanche is at the gate and his mother on the verandah. They had two boys, Lance and Bill. The mother gave her daughter the opportunities and the graces. One of the children lived in the railway carriage behind the Church of England, Research. Lance died first, but Bill survived long enough to join the Merchant Navy. He eventually entered the Mont Park Sanatorium where Ernest Reynolds used to visit him every Sunday. The inscription on the back of the photograph indicates that it is of Chris Stratton, his brother Bill and his mother. This is most likely Christopher John Stratton, 1862-1906. His mother Johanna (née Bentley), widowed in 1863, married Archibald Ferguson shortly afterwards, and the "brother" is likely to be Archibald's and Johanna's son William John Ferguson, born 1866. This photograph is of Robert O'Hara Burke (6 May 1821 – c. 28 June 1861) who was an Irish soldier and police officer who achieved fame as an Australian explorer. He was the leader of the ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition, which was the first expedition to cross Australia from south to north, finding a route across the continent from the settled areas of Victoria to the Gulf of Carpentaria. Prior to leading this expedition, Burke was the superintendent of Police in Beechworth from 1858-1860. The Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum was named in honour of Robert O’Hara Burke after his death at Coopers Creek in 1861 during expedition. This particular image of Robert O'Hara Burke features on the 'Pioneer Board' which is currently on display in the Museum. Black and white rectangular copy of a photograph. John Brown died 23 Sept 1906 after a short severe illness at age 55 and is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (Evelyn Observer 28 Sep 1906 p2). The deceased gentleman was highly respected, and always took a lively and active interest in promoting the progress and prosperity of the district, and his loss will be much felt, He was only 55 years of age, and leaves a wife and large family to mourn their loss, and much sympathy is felt for them.
