This watch was carried by this former Student when he paid the supreme sacrifice in Pozieres France on August 7th, 1916. This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Joseph Ebery was a Congregational minister, born 1858, died November 3, 1947. Ministry was as Wesleyan Home Missionary ?–1897; Congregational churches – Dover (Tas) 1897-1907; Tamar St Launceston 1907-1909; Devonport 1909-1914; Gatton (Qld) 1915-?; Redcliffe (Qld) 1921-1927; Beechworth (Vic) 1927-1930; Hughesdale 1930-1934. Was a Wesleyan lay preacher at Allandale and Woodbridge (Tas). Obituary - "… For ten years carried on an energetic evangelistic ministry, riding his horse over the roughtest roads in his scattered district, which was 25 miles long, and visiting even the southern-mosst home in the island (Tasmania)" As a Wesleyan Home Missionary he was not allowed to marry. The Congregationalists had no such restrictions so he joined the Congregational Church and married his Emily. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.The McKenzie Children: Late one night in 1934, Mr Bryant West and Mr Loton heard cries for help from the vicinity of the Cowes Jetty. Attempts were made to save a woman and the children. Sadly only the adult could be rescued. The three young bodies were later recovered and buried in the cemetery. When this photo was taken "Holly Green" as it was called then was owned by the Webb family. It was originally called "Emu Bottom" when the Evans family owned the property and re-named "Emu Bottom" when Hedly Elliot acquired it in the 1960s.A mounted black and white photograph of "Holly Green". The Kew Historical Society’s collection includes a wide range of leisure objects. Many of the items are European-made, generally of British origin, however there are a number that were made for the Australian market by Australian manufacturers. In the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, there were large numbers of games produced for children and adults. These included: arcade games, board games, playing cards and puzzles. A representative sample, many now rare survivors, can be found in the collection. Chinese Chequers was first commercially produced in 1938, although it is not Chinese, nor a form of checkers. The maker of the game, John Sands Pty Ltd produced board games between 1929 and 1978. Milton Bradley is a famous American board game manufacturer.Original packaging in a labelled cardboard box that includes a board games played by moving checkers from the triangle closets to each player to the opposite side of the board. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Black and white photograph of a man with one hand in the pocket of his suit trousers, standing before the front porch of a timber house.
