Able Seaman William Frank Deacon (Service no: W/70), was born in Essendon 13 March 1909 and enlisted in the RAN on 15 April 1940. He served on the HMAS Sydney and was Killed in Action, Indian Ocean, 20 November 1941, aged 32 years. On 19 November 1941, HMAS Sydney was steaming back to Fremantle, having escorted a troopship part of the way to Singapore when it was attacked by German raider, "Kormoran" and sank. By midnight HMAS Sydney was lost with all 645 hands, including Able Seaman Deacon. Embarked for Egypt 23.11.1915, hospitalised 25.1.1916 with Mumps, rejoined unit 9.2.1916, WIA 25.7.1916 GSW to Chest and Arm, rejoin unit 6.8.1916, reported missing 3.3.1917. German records dated 4.6.1917 reported him captured at Thilloy on 2.3.1917 and he was imprisoned at Gefangenen lager Limburg A/Lahn Germany. Maurice arrived back in England on 19.12.1918. He was given leave and decided to make it longer and was let of a charge of AWL. Before George Lysaght enlisted, he was a stud groom in Lilydale, George enlisted on December 16, 1914 at the age of 19. He embarked from Melbourne on May 28, 1915 on HMAT Persic (A34). He arrived in Tel-el-k Egypt where he was appointed as a driver. He transferred to Alexandria, Egypt and then to France in July 1916 he transferred to the !st Anzac Army Corp and joined the 13th Light Horse Regiment. He returned to Australia on Ma the 1914-15y 11, 1919 on the Zealandia. Studio portrait of 5347 Private Cyril Buckler, 14th Battalion. A postman from Wangaratta, Victoria, prior to enlistment on 16 February 1916 he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 4 April 1916 for Egypt. His unit relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. Pte Buckler was killed in action near Pozieres, France, on 7 August 1916. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. This photograph of Cyril Buckler in the rank of Sergeant was probably taken while he was serving in the Senior Cadets or the Citizen Forces prior to enlistment in the AIF.Cyril Buckler was a postman in Wangaratta prior to enlisting in the AIF on February 16 1916 at the age of 19 years 11 months. He was killed in action on August 7th 1916 near Pozieres in France aged 20 years. He has no known grave. The original South Wangaratta Primary School served the district for over 110 years and closed in December 1985 before moving to new premises. When the school closed in 1989 and with the demise of the South Wangaratta Hall due to flooding in the 1990's the Honour Board was wrapped in a blanket and stored in a shed for the best part of 10 years before being donated to the Wangaratta RSL for safekeeping and permanent display These listed men were either born, worked or enlisted at Wangaratta prior to serving their country in the First World War.
