Document - Patent Applications - Trolley Pole safety appliance, Percy Ireland, 1920
Percy Markham Ireland (1893-1976), a tramway rolling stock engineer with the MMTB and a Military engineer applied in 1920 for a patent for a "Trolley Pole safety appliance for electric trams and the like". He was successful in gaining a patent in a number of countries including the UK, France, Germany, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. The associated documents show the differences in making patent applications in various countries. From research undertaken by the Museum it appears that while his patent applications were successful, his invention was never actually implemented on tramcars in Melbourne". Collected by Noelle Jones as research for an article in the March 2023 issue of the Museum's magazine Bellcord, giving details of Mr Ireland's tramway and military career. Photograph - Set of 12 - construction of King St overpass in Flinders St, 1959
Photos show the construction of King St overpass in Flinders St which was part of the project to construct a bridge over the Yarra River and provide a new southern outlet road between the city and eventually St Kilda Junction. The overpass construction was commenced in 1959 with tramway works first commencing. It was demolished in 2005. 1 - looking west at Market St. 2 - looking east from Spencer and Flinders St with the railway viaduct behind. 3 - Tram lines diverted onto the new overpass. Coloured postcard of the view from Little Collins St looking north along Elizabeth St. Has a northbound cable tram and several horse-drawn wagons in the view. In the view are the GPO, Newing's Artists materials, Royal Arcade, and Turner's bicycles. The letter is dated 8/12 from an Eck in Toorak addressed to Doris Ettelson in Ballarat. The stamp used was introduced in 1913 by the Commonwealth Government as the first National stamp - see reference. Card published by C T Melbourne. ... specification for US PCC tramcars. tramways tramcars PCC new trams ...Document produced by the Transit Research Corporation of New York, details the specifications for the Presidents Conference Committee (PCC) for a streetcar or tram for American cities. The MMTB researched this type of tramcar for use in Melbourne, taking out a licence for their production. This document dated 1/4/1947 with revision to 1/6/1950 would have been part of the licence agreement. Unfortunately, there were insufficient funds to build this type of tramcar. Only tram 980 which was based on a modified W6 class body was fitted with PCC equipment, later transferred to prototype PCC tram 101.
