Used in operating theatres, medical surgeries and hospital wards for storage of surgical gauze or theatre dry stocks such as cotton wool or towels. The blouse was made in Greece about 1945. The method used to create this fine embroidery was to copy a design from a cross stitch embroidery book guided by fine white tapestry threads tacked onto the yolk; when the design was finished, the embroiderer would pull out each fine white tapestry thread until only the embroidery remained around the yolk of the blouse.Throughout the centuries and up until the 1970s-80s, the women of Ithaca spun, wove, embroidered and knitted. Mothers prepared their daughters' 'glory boxes' trousseau (prikia), weaving bedspreads, rag mats (koureloudes) for everyday use, finer wool rugs for formal use, as well as linen sheets, pillowcases, blankets, towels and tablecloths. Linen was also woven to make the mattress that the young brides would take to their future homes. Mothers also wove and embroidered the fabric for their daughters' underwear and petticoats, nightgowns, etc. Sewing of the garments was also done by hand. The girls embroidered handicrafts using various stitches, they crocheted lace, netted pillows and even linen carpets. The handicrafts were usually embroidered by hand in cross-stitch using linen and cotton fabric. At the time there were merchants who travelled to the villages to sell machine made goods for the trousseaus, but most of the dowries consisted of the beautifully crafted work of the women. In the 30's the SINGER Company came to Ithaca and taught the girls sewing on the machine. A handwoven silk blouse. Colour - ecru. Hand embroidered, hand sewn, very fine white tapestry was tacked round the yolk; a gusset was sewn under each short puff sleeve at the armpit; two-tone hand made silk thread cords were passed through the hollow border of the sleeves and neckline.

Bodice of jacket has 8 cm vertical lace inserts next to the edge of the bands, continuing over the shoulders and down the back of the bodice to the waist. From the waistline is an ungathered skirt widening slightly at the hem. Inserted band at front waistline, with a pointed overlap, shaped to 3.5 cm wide stitched down around front. Front opening bodice has a four press-stud closure, and two 1.75 cm white plastic buttons, sewn over the closure. Buttons impressed with a ridged pattern. Two darts on either side of lower edge of bodice, one dart from shoulder on either side of bodice. Six gores in skirt. Probably home stitched. Clothing. White linen camisole with peplum 8.5 cm deep. Round lace yoke at the front, with a panel for a ribbon insertion. Some evidence exists on the right front, that once there was a pink ribbon - possibly silk, but now there are only a few threads left. The insertion panel continues around the back neck edge. Two panels of three .5 cm tucks run from the neckline to the waist of the centre back. Front opening, with two 1 cm pearl buttons still evident, and a cotton tape and casing at the waistline. Clothing. A concealed full length back opening reveals five tiny covered buttons, 7 mm in diameter and five hand-stitched button holes. This opening is bordered by two groups of five very fine pin tucks with a 3 cm spacing between the two groups. The blouse is made from very fine Swiss lawn cotton fabric, and is very soft to the feel. The front has a broad panel thirty cm wide of exquisite pintucks, crochet, lace and embroidery. The embroidery is white on white, and features flowers and leaves in a curved pattern. A crochet panel below the high neckline is 4 cm x 10 cms and is peaked at the lower edge. This is bordered by 1.5 cm wide cotton lace, and horizontal pintucks. Two panels, one on either side of three pintucks, 1.5 cm panel of lace, and then the central panel of embroidery, pintucks, lace, and crochet. Five pintucks, 1.5 cm panel of lace and five more pintucks run the length of the short sleeves. Sleeves are puffed, and gathered at the shoulder, and at the 1.5 cm deep cuff, which is also pintucked. A 1.5 cm deep 'stand-up' collar, spoke-stitched to the garment, as are the sleeves and shoulder seams. Front hemline is curved. Clothing. Fine white linen fabric. A .8 cm 'tuck' edged at top and bottom with a spoke-stitched border, marks the waistline. Below the waistline is a peplum, split at the centre front with 8 cm deep peaks. These peaks are repeated at the centre back. The peplum tapers to 7 cm deep at side seams. The camisole is trimmed at the top edge with a 4 cm deep band of cotton lace. The top edge of the linen fabric has a double row (off set) of cotton embroidered 'spots' 2 mm in diameter, and three rows of drawn thread work - one cm in width, 3.5 cm wide lace form the shoulder straps. The back opening fastens with six tiny 7cm pearl buttons, and hand-stitched button holes. The lower button fastens with a loop at the waistline 1880-90's. A 'fan' of pintucks, arched from 4 cm long at the ends, to 6 cm long at the centre, fans the midriff at the centre front, above the waistline - 28 tucks in total.costume, female, camisole.

Clothing. White fine linen fabric, trimmed at lower leg with a 2 cms wide cotton , brooierie insertion and a 12 cm wide frill of textured (?) fine linen or cotton lawn broiderie. The front waistband dips to a central 8 cm deep peak. Waistband at side seams, is 4.5 cm deep and back waistband is 10 cm deep at side seams, and the 11 cm deep at centre back. Two 1.4 cm covered buttons close the back waistband. The knickers have a gathered opening panel, called at the time a ''drop-seat'' or ''access hatch'' at the centre back. This panel has a 5 cm deep waistband, fastened at either side by a covered button, and a third button at the centre. These buttons are sewn to the back waistband, and the button holes are sewn, correspondingly on the gathered back. A drawstring tape is also threaded through the back waistband. Large 75cm tall plastic doll with curly blonde hair. Her eyes close when she is laid on her back. She is dressed in a cream muslin dress with vertical inserts of white braid. It is also trimmed with wide cream cotton lace on the bodice and hem and burgundy insert on the bodice. A burgundy sash is around her waist. Underneath the dress is a cream cotton pintucked petticoat trimmed with various cream laces and cream cotton bloomers trimmed with cotton lace and white satin bows. She is wearing black socks and brown canvas shoes with plastic soles. Clothing. Five sided green, silk, beaded bag. Lined with green linen gauze like fabric. Ten .8 cm brass loops sewn to the top of the bag.Has a drawstring of green cotton thread. Two peaked flaps, 7.5 cm deep, fall from below the drawstring over the top of the bag. Flaps and the main body of the bag have exquisite tiny glass beads - white, and clear-(reflecting the green of the fabric) in an absolutely exquisite floral design. These beads are the tiniest beads imaginable. The underside of the flaps is lined with the linen gauze, and an overlay of silk. Object. Soft white kid leather rectangle - 29 cm x 25 cms, outlined with a 1 cm wide red ribbon frame, a 2.5 cm blue frame, and a further 1 cm red frame. A metal lodge symbol, 6.5 cm x 3.5 cm is stitched onto the lower corners. A Vshaped is hanging panel overlaps the leather panel. and is stitched into the waistband, and hangs freely. The Vshape is edged by a 2.5 cm wide pale blue grosgrain ribbon, and the ribbon is, in turn, edged with a fine red border. This hanging panel is made from white kid leather, and has a Tshaped metal panel stitched at the centre front, and at the two lower corners. Fine blue and white check, baby rompers. Bib front, bound with white bias binding. Binding around the rounded neckline extends into a tie at the back neckline. The rompers are backless. The bloused "Shorts" have two tiny pleats on each side of the centre back seam. The shorts are bound at the high leg edges, and at the waistline, with white bias binding.Sides have a 5 cm "split" at each side, and the complete waistline, and side splits are bound in white bias binding, which ties in a bow at each side. All edges (except hemline) ie sleeves, and centre front, including neck edge, are finished in perle thread, buttonhole stitched two cm wide scallops. Satin stitch, and cut work embroidery, in a floral design, are on the lower edge of the short sleeves and on the front bodice.The waistline has a four cm wide band of ribbon, in an insertion design,- but there is no ribbon insertion evident. This would be the only form of closure, from the waistline a slightly gathered panel,22cm deep, gives a peplum effect. Hemline is faced with a 1.7cm wide cotton facing. The ribbon insertion panel has alternating 1.2cm wide floral embroidered ribbon and one cm wide plain ribbon.
