Garry BISH (1950- ) Born Charlton, Victoria After training as a secondary school art teacher in Melbourne in 1968-69, Gary Bish moved to Bendigo, where he established the Potters Arms Studio in Epsom in 1972 while studying for a Diploma of Art and Design in ceramics at the Bendigo Institute of Technology, graduating in 1974. Establishing an independent studio in Epsom in 1972, Garry Bish has lectured in Ceramics for many years. Bish marks his work with his signature or an impressed 'B' with a stem like a feather, or in later years the Initial GB in a square. Springmount Pottery is located in Creswick, Victoria, and produces and sells works designed by its owner, Tina Banitska, who also owns the Convent Gallery in Daylesford. Banitska came to Australia with her family from Greece in 1956. She trained at RMIT and Franklin State College, before taking over Doug Alexander's Springmount Pottery when he moved to Tharwa in 1976. Retaining the pottery name, she developed it as a workshop, employing throwers and decorators to make works to her design, and initially selling these through the Springmount Pottery Gallery on Main Street, Ballarat. The pottery now operates with its own gallery onsite. Banitska's initial interest in ash glazes is continued in the Pottery's ashware line and there has also been a wide range of other Springmount designs. This is a field wallet that belonged to Rolf Crawley. He was an engineer, surveyor and architect in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle were also engineers, working in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years service to the Shire. The Shire of Warrnambool existed from 1863 to 1994. The wallet came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business of Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the wallet, along with several ledgers and other Crawley memorabilia from the estate of Michael Hand. This wallet is of interest as it was owned and used by Rolf Crawley when he was doing field work in connection with his surveying and engineering jobs either in private practice or as the Shire of Warrnambool engineer in the 20th century. This is a brown leather wallet in two sections that fold over and close with a flap or tongue that inserts into a strip of leather stitched into the cover. The two sections have extra pieces of leather that are stitched on to make compartments. These contain three pieces of thick card folded over. These cards have rough notes and figures handwritten on them. Inside the wallet is a hand-printed name. The wallet is much scuffed and stained. ‘Rolf L. Crawley L. S. Braille is a system of touch reading and writing for blind persons in which raised dots represent the letters of the alphabet Braille is read by moving the hand or hands from left to right along each line. Residents of Moorabbin Shire used these cards at social gatherings. In the early 1800s Charles Barbier, who served in Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army, developed a unique system known as “night writing” so soldiers could communicate safely - without lamps- during the night. Louis Braille, born Coupvray, France 1809 lost his sight at a very young age, 1819 he was enrolled at the National Institute of the Blind in Paris.and began to modify Charles Barbier’s “night writing” code in an effort to create an efficient written communication system for fellow blind individuals. . He spent the better part of the next nine years developing and refining the system of raised dots that has come to be known by his name, Braille. The code was now based on cells with only 6-dots instead of 12 ..Braille died in 1852 but his code spread around the world France 1854, USA 1860 , and blind individuals from all over the world benefit from Braille’s work daily. John Brown Industries became a listed company in 1951 and acquired Star Hosiery Mills factory and its Bendigo offshoot. In 1955 they purchased a 4 acre site at Ironbark to build a new mill. This lamp was the light source for the projector which was operated at Dunkeld and the wider district during the 1920's and 30's. The company which operated it was called Royal Pictures and showede their films in district halls. Owned by Claude Taylor and Reuben Schache. The projector was hand operated. Films were also shown outside on a large screen outside the Royal Mail Hotel.Metal carbon arc lamp. 6 Adjustor screws to adjust the rods to strike and hold the carbon arc. These rods allow adjustment and totation of the carbon rods which hold the arc. Brass feferrules are used for fine adjustments. Hand wheels are insulated to protect the operator. Spirits came in bottles sold at licensed premises either locally or in larger cities visited during shopping expeditions. The shape and colour of the bottles varied. An 'Imperial Pint' was the standard measurement at the time. The opening of bottles was hand made prior to 1915. History of Mitchell & Co. In 1909 the Australian Army Headquarters realized that mapping in Australia was either non existent or inadequate for Military use. It was requested that Australia borrow Survey personnel from the UK Royal Engineers (RE) for a two-year detachment. On 11 April 1910 four RE NCOs arrived in Melbourne comprising CPL J Lynch, and LCPLs AH Barrett, EF Davies and R Wilcox. LCPL Barrett had 12yrs experience with RE. They were aiming at producing eight map sheets per year covering about 7,000 square miles (18,000 square Km) This map sheet of the Newcastle area was produced using plane table methods and was surveyed and hand drawn by LCPL A Barrett Oct - Nov 2010. It was unique because it was now produced on an accurate gridded base and included contouring. Lynch and Davies transferred to the Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) whilst Barrett and Wilcox returned to the UK in June 1913. Barrett returned to Australia in 1915 and also enlisted in the RAE and served until 1919.A gridded Map of Newcastle NSW area scale four inches to one mile with 25 feet interval contouring. The helmet belonged to Henry Victor Evans No 418655 RAAF. Refer 1760.4. Type B flying helmet made of dark brown leather and lined with chamois. There is a leather chin strap fastened on the left with a white metal buckle. On the inside of the helmet on either side of the face are two snap fasteners with a strip of chamois backed webbing fastened between them for securing an oxygen mask or face protector. There is a buckled strap across the back of the neck with two thinner buckled straps running vertically above it. Another thin buckled strap is secured across the front of the helmet. A circular ear piece is sewn on either side of the helmet with a zippered opening. Inside each piece is a brass fitting for attaching gosport tubes.
